Mikey, If you learn nothing from the full size weathering project, you will learn patience and possibly how some words fit in to conversations with yourself. I disliked the staining effects created on the wood at a house in North Central WIsconsin because it turns out I was not careful enough with the pressure washer. The pressure washer is a fun, great tool. Stain or paint on the siding is where those words might come in handy but actually are not helpful.

All kidding aside, like models it’s the prep that is important and don’t rush. Nice size porch
Tom: Ya, fun with pressure washer. Went to wash down our house and forgot I had the white nozzle in the thing. Now have a very large divot in a piece of CDX about 6 feet long. The white nozzle is the one with the most pressure and smallest diameter spray. The next up nozzle ( Red I think ) does take all the old paint off logs/CDX and or trim pretty easy though. Then there was the time I blew over a wheelbarrow with dog sitting in it - that did not go well. I did miss the dog with the spray though. Note that I use the PW when getting rid of wasp nests - thing will knock them down at 30 feet; for the ones up a tree and further than that - 20Ga pump.

Between naps today as I catch up from the lack of sleep from the last 2 days of flying I will be back at the bench in WIsconsin. The top 3 yellow TBOX cars have been shipped out. So, along with opening some retail therapy boxes I ordered while gone, I will tackle the 3 ARMN reefers from Athearn. Some streaking rust, grime all over and some scratches to be added. These are older cars and I have to re-investigate the build dates to see how gung-ho I can go.

These 2 sulfur cars are spoken for and along with 3 others were clear coated a matte finish before I left. Those 2 pictured will also be worked on. Part of my very important retail therapy program I follow found me 11 more sulfur cars that will be unpackaged and displayed in Alcomotive’s long running thread Mail Call today.

Feels great to be home and better to be at the bench. If the haze from the Alberta fires dissipates over the next few days, I will do some bench time on my portable desk top out on the deck. 80’s and calm the next few days and if I can’t detail I can make trees.

I did the pressure washer on a wasp nest when we were still up in North Central WIsconsin. I found that you pressure wash the wasp nest during the day, not at dusk. You want the nest empty, at dusk it’s full. No stings occurred but it was close…

The PW also takes out bird nests really quick. Such a versatile fun machine

1st up is Athearn’s version of the ARMN refrigerated Reefer. While they did use a real prototype number the car is not a real match. The model:

IMG_0417.jpeg
The car was cleaned with an air brush spraying on 70% Isopropyl Alcohol. When dry the trucks and wheels were removed and weathered. The car was clear coated using Army Painters Matt Varnish “air” version.
IMG_0420.jpeg
The wheels and trucks were weathered using Vallejo Model colors hand brushed on. I used a mix of colors German C Black Brown #70.822 and 70.872 Chocolate Brown leaning heavier towards the brown. The wheel faces are done with Vallejo Air #71.040 Burnt Umber. All 5 pair of trucks were done using those colors.
IMG_0421.jpeg

Decals for graffiti were then applied. They are a mix of Blair and Circuscitydecal.com. While I prefer to use Matt’s decals from Circus City I really like the ease of cutting out the Blair.

I follow directions with decals that are in both companies sheets.

I see Troy is watching, I wonder if he could do a reaL 3D splatt coyote, although I have never seen a 3 on a wagon…..hmm of to investigate

I missed posting of The real car. The model does not show the refrigerator unit

as a reminder. I use the real car photos as a muse. I do not try to duplicate the weathering. The pictures are credited in each frame on the edge.
For you track and ballasting experts out there, look at the last picture, especially the track closest to the camera.

ARMN 761511 is a mess. Pictures later. I had it pretty good with lots of white sides showing and then I went overboard. Stripping it down and hopefully not losing the graffiti decal work. Already lost all the hand drawn tagging.

I jumped into the project after being gone from the bench too soon. Should have gradually moved on the Reefer. But back ups were in place. Started a 2 Gondola job last November but the client passed before I could finish and the wife told me to keep them.

So I pulled them out to work on. Still a bit more to do like add some hand drawn tags and then clear coat the cars. It maybe Wednesdauy though before I break out the client stuff. I will be working on personal projects until I hopefully get into a groove I am comfortable with

After clear coating and then letting the models thoroughly dry 48 hours I sprayed the underside. This is a base coat of Tamiya Hull Red #XF9 and Black XF1 with some clear base #X21. 70%-25%-5% ratios roughly.

Next up on the tank cars is some specific weathering and working on the wheels and truck frames

Good morning. Not much done yesterday as the outside weather yesterday was awesome. Maybe today I will get some more time at the bench. The weather is cloudy, cooler and possible T-storms later this morning.

Some wheel splatter on a few cars. I actually did 7 pieces but I guess I didn’t take any more pictures. I also did the wheels and side frames for the 7

Purchased some Scaletrain bulkhead flats, here is my 1 car

IMG_0536.jpeg

Started working on it this morning, underside is Tamiya hull red xf9, Xf1 black and x21 flat base and then I find out 2 hour drying time today wasn’t enough. Humidity is high outside but It’s usually dry enough when I throw it on the turntable. Underside wasn’t 100% done anyway but I dislike re-doing things. Paint scrapes on the Centerbeam support. I will fix that before bed tonight with a grimy charcoal dusty black to get rid of any yellow showing underneath

The floorboards were installed by Scaletrains in this run. I scraped them up with a sanding stick and put a diluted mix of Vallejo Panzer Aces Dark Rust #302 and a few drops of #71.161 Vallejo Airbrush thinner. Used the thinner instead of water and I have no swelling of the floor boards.

Before I did the floorboards and bulkhead panels I did take a fine brush and on the floor runs (yellow) I touched the indentations with Vallejo Air Black #71.057 straight. Did 3 at a time counting to 10 after the 3rd one and wiped off what I could with a piece of toilet paper

Lots more to do on the floor

Trucks frames and wheels were done with #302 Dark Rust from the Vallejo Panzer Aces line
