Snowman- have you looked at the suction feed airbrush where you can use larger containers of paint?
I have also seen videos on You tube with people using gravity feed spray guns for helmets and larger items like surf boards.
How much paint do you want to spray at a time?
Yeah, the old Badger was a bottle/suction feed, but mine never had any kind of tight fit and the bottles often dropped out...which led to paint dripping down from the suction tube and needle area. Occasionally onto the model itself, which was just annoying as all he**.

[I did invent a few new colorful phrases back then, I'm sure, thereby broadening my palette, so it wasn't all bad I guess. :-P ]

Some things finished in the last 9 days and sent out:

Walthers Proto All door car, I had purchased 3, sold 1, 1 for the layout and 1 to weather and hopefully sell

Exactrail RBOX yellow boxcar I think it’s a 50’. I sold this 1 and have another to sell or keep

Walthers Proto Sulfur car, black body, I have 5 more full black body cars

fun with weathering

Some more cars weathered

Athearn reefer, this one is spoken for, I am working on 4 more, 2 with graffiti and 2 without
IMG_0643.jpeg

Another full black body Walthers Proto Sulfur car, this is spoken for
IMG_0642.jpeg

Another full body black Walthers Proto sulfur car, this has shipped. This was a strange job, got the picture of a prototype but he also supplied the paint for the grime/chemical burn of the body
IMG_0642.jpeg

Some inventory, most of these are weathered waiting to be posted somewhere for sale. The Aurora Miniatures are clear coated only

I am trying to clear inventory to reduce the amount of items going to the new house. Since I’m not sure how big or exactly what industries are going on the new layout, nothing is hands off.

Of the cars in these 2 pictures I can IMO type that the Aurora Miniatures are the best cars I have purchased.I purchased a case of 18 of the boxcar (pre-sold, then weathered and already shipped) and it is far superior to the Scaletrains, Exactrail and Tangent cars I have.

I replied directly to a message asking how much time a day do I spend at the bench but here is the response:

I do at most, 3-2 hour weathering sessions a day, with at least 1 hour between sessions. Often though I will only do 2 sessions. The 2 hours was determined with my doctors to prevent eye strain, back fatigue and an increase in my blood glucose levels. I don’t stress about anything since my anxiety attacks of 12/2021 and 1/2022. But when I concentrate for a long period of time the levels go up and it’s not good for this type 2 diabetic. I used to easily stay 4-5 hours at the bench, no longer.

Another question is what paints? I use mostly arcylic paints from Tamiya and Vallejo. My varnishes (dull or gloss coats) vary. I use VMS, Army Painter and Ak-Interactives but have experimentEd with others. I do use oils but only on weathering I plan to keep for myself.

enjoy the evening

I am working on these 4 Scaletrains Rivet Counter cars as a weathering commission
IMG_0652.jpeg

The bodies were faded with a mix of Tamiya #x-2 White, #x-21 flat base and 99% Isopropyl Alcohol. 40% white / 60% ISA and just 2 drops of x-21 base. Each tank car got a different % of X-2 to vary the fades
IMG_0651.jpeg

24 hours later they were clear coated again with PMS matt clear vanish
IMG_0655.jpeg

IMG_0649.jpeg

The underbodies were sprayed with a 30% to 70% of Tamiya #xf-9 Hull Red and 99%IPA

IMG_0654.jpeg
IMG_0653.jpeg

Then Vallejo Air # 71.029 Dark Earth was brushed on for the kick up spray from the wheels
IMG_0650.jpeg

The wheels and truck frames were done per a client request with Vallejo #302 Dark Rust from the Panzer Aces series of acrylic paints. This matches the previous tank cars I have weathered for him. The axles and inside wheel faces were also done. The wheel face outer edge will be cleaned off tomorrow to indicate these ares have gone through a hump yard and the retarders cleanEd the outer edge of the wheel. They have to be thoroughly dried

any questions, constructive criticisms please type in

Interesting turn of events

Client decided after providing a picture of the weathering coverage he wanted and approving the above, he didn’t want it. This was while I was waiting for payment. It happens and I am not bothered by a mind change. He has been a regular for years, 2-3 cars a year! So I asked how he wanted it now and he sent me this
IMG_4525.jpeg

I still am chuckling, it should look familiar, it’s one I did and posted here the other day. He saw it on my client’s Facebook page and decided he liked that better. My client of the KLRX doesn’t have it yet as I am working on 2 other cars for him. But now it’s going elsewhere for a bit more $ that I am splitting the difference with the original KLRX requestor. He laughed as I was doing a total of 3 sulfur cars, 1 all black, black with yellow center panel and an all yellow car. Now he doesn’t want an all black car. He’s getting another black with the yellow center panels. Fun with clients!

I will be stripping the GATX car, it was too overboard for my tastes.

I should be in the train room but it’s so nice out at 80f going to 84 degrees that I am sitting on the front porch. Plenty of weathering time coming this week as the temperatures will be consistently mid 90’s.

This is an experiment that failed IMO

this actually is sort of a copy from a picture the client sent me

IMG_0749.jpeg

This can be stripped off as it’s not sealed, waiting for a response

Not sure about the graffiti on this one, but if that's what the client wants......
He agrees with me and I removed the tags. I will probably post Wednesday with the new tagging on the car. I can do custom tagging but he wanted the above that IMO is a cross between tags and graffiti. I didn’t purposely make it as bad as it looks but I’m not creative and I can’t do custom graffiti.

He did actually love the right side with the long line looping back on itself but I convinced him I can do It different and better. I am so glad he said to strip it

Today was a day of challenges. While I was doing retail online therapy from Hawaii, Scaletrains offered a deal. They had rejected some Rivet Counter tank cars and the issues were minor, fixable and instead of returning them to China they offered them at a discount. What can go wrong when you get a discount? I ordered 8! I texted my modern modeler list about these special cars, what the discount was and what I would be offering them for. Sold out the 8, in less than 3 hours!

The same “good” cars that I pictured earlier today. The 4 in the publicity shot on the curve are $18 more expensive then these so called “reject” cars. Last week I worked on the 1st 4 and shipped them out this morning. I cleaned some IMO lubricant or mold release compound on the bodies with my normal 99% IPA spray. No issues and they weathered fine.

Today though! Wow, they are bad. Same thing, I could only find the lubricant on the car, nothing broken or out of line.
IMG_4528.jpeg

3 of the 4 cars I cleaned are like this. Right now they are sitting in a bath of dawn dish soap and warm warm.

I showed them to the 2 guys who want 2 each of these cars. Everyone has their own tastes and likes. One asked me what would happen if I just weathered over it. I don’t know and really wasn’t willing to find out. The other guy backed out and took 2 good ST Rivet Counters I had finished in stock. I will scrub these tonight and rinse them off in a warm clean water bath. They will be air dried over night.

Some progress on a couple ST Rivet counter tank cars going into inventory
IMG_4557.jpeg

the picture is set up to show a possible client the different rust effect colors of many I can do on these cars. These cars are part of a “in between” project as for probably the next 3 weeks I will be working mainly on Diesel Locomotives

The attempts at oil scratches right of the ladder on the front car is a fail and have since been removed. Except for my own stuff I will be staying with Arcylics.

Wasn’t planning much weathering other then 5 locomotives in the other thread. But, with the new air booth having issues I needed something to do. I had clear coated these cars with a matte finish last weeks before selling the old spray booth.

These are the Walthers Proto series of models. Full yellow sulfur cars

All done with Tamiya Arcylics but applied with a brush as a wash

Some more work was needed to be done on these and I did. But they are drying right now and I won‘t have any additional pictures until after the grandson’s hockey game tonight.

Does anyone know if Sulfur cars are humped?

Looking at the 3 prototype pictures above the wheels are completely dirty. When humped a car goes through the retarders to slow its speed down. When the retarders grip the wheels usually the outside edge of the wheel is clean. These pictures do not show that.

Your thoughts and interpretations on these pictures is very much welcomed

Found this.
Thank you Tom. It’s always entertaining when I read the stuff there. Basic answer from the article is if your not caught anything gets humped.
