So,
I worked on this car a little more.

Did the other side with the light earth and hit the bottom with some grimy black.
I then hit both sides with a layer of Dullcote. To my Suprise the effect was not as diminished as I expected.
For a $3 Bachmann car I'm actually growing quite fond of this little 40-footer. I may throw conspicuity stripping from Smokebox graphics on this and run it around for a while.

Still figuring out rust streaks. They are eluding me. I tried turning the brush on its side like recommended.

On to the roof and ends.

What do you think?

You did far better than when I first tried, I think the Toms have done an excellent thread that helps people get a quick start on the techniques, you’ll quickly find the more you practise the more you’ll get a feel for the techniques, and find which work well with your talents and paints.
I like the dirty look.

Joe, excellent job bringing them to where you want them. Please continue to post your progress

I just finished another batch of reefer canvas for graffiti cars. The ARMN/UP cars are a wonderful white that the graffiti artist/vandal sees as the nicest canvas on the rails. White is hard but also can be the most satisfying.

I try to fade the plastic sheen away 1st with a washing of 99% Isopropyl Alcohol. Then a spray of white thinned with the 99% IPA. I have used light gray thinned and I had often in the past used the Tamiya x21 based 100% out of the bottle and brushed chalky residue off with a brush.

lots of fun, thanks for joining us
Thanks Tom, modelling is on hold at the moment due to fitting a new kitchen at home, Im hoping to get some more work done on these cars towards the end of the week

Looks super Tom

Thank you both.

After cleaning the sidewalks and driveway twice this morning, I finallygot to the bench about 3.5 hours ago. It is break time.

Working on finishing up 6 cars. Next is the wheel splatter on the ends. Let those dry and clear coat for the cars to dry overnight.

These were completed about 6-8 weeks ago, packaged and billed out. These were a rush for a special event the client was attending. Anyway, no payment, no shipment. Communication while minimal was sort of there. He promised payment. Finally good guy Tom asked with a dead line to contact me. Wife filed divorce and business all of a sudden isn’t very good. Manager and his wife opened the same business and took some clients.

Anyway, I did these the way he wanted, light grime, some fade but no wheel splatter. I will do the splatter this afternoon and maybe more.

Kind of frustrated. But it’s life…

The cars as usual look brilliant, great work Tom.
As for the client, he could have contacted you to explain why there was no payment, it would have been, in my book anyway, the polite thing to do.

Thanks Chris. Another set of tank cars I really enjoyed weathering. Just some more to do on them and they will get posted.

Oh we texted but lots of time between responses from him. It’s too bad I purchased another set of these 3 right after these were done, finished those and shipped them off.

This is one of those things I really wish they’d make more numbers. What we talked about the other day. The second client would love more of these cars but…

Or you can keep them for yourself. :)

Thats probably the plus of situations like this. Well done weathered pieces such as these can be sold to someone else, and you might be able to up your price a few bucks. Inflation you know!
I charge for the car if I supply it. I add in the cost of the packaging and then my normal rates for weathering. Shipping is extra and I charge the exact amount the PO charges me. I’m not in it for any money because there isn’t enough. I am happy with what I gain.

Just a minor set back.

When I buy a car and weather it, I weather it for me. That way if it doesn’t sell I have it the way I like it. If the client supplies the car they let me know how they would like it. That’s what happened here.

Next cars up. Client request. Probably my most favorite car. The Centerbeam or in this case the Atlas Center Partition car. If it’s not my favorite it’s a close second to the Pulp Wood car.

These have been clear coated. Wheels and trucks are next then the body of the car.

Hoping to come close to the yellow ones in these pictures. I did these last year in October so the client could run them at Trainfest in 11/2022 in the Milwaukee area.

As noted the other day I sold a weathered Scaletrains Rivet Counter bulkhead flat 5 minutes after I listed it. The second guy took 15 minutes and explained it was sold. Asked if I had any more. I did/do. 2 more but planned for me. He made an offer for both and I said I can’t find anymore, I will sell 1. It’s finished, packaged, paid for and ready for

pick up by the Sunday USPS truck.

JazA., you may pick up this is close to the same location of the photos the other day. You can see the real branches being used as tree trunks.

Or you can keep them for yourself. :)
I have room on my ethanol load out track for 4 tanks cars. I have 2 TILX tank cars that reacted terribly to a second clear coating. Something interacted on both cars with the paint and if it won’t strip I will keep them, along with my 2 NATX tank cars. 4 tank cars for the layout is plenty.

They will sell eventually.

Scale Trains is doing another run of those, due the end of June.
I will look into that. I think I paid $42 street price each. I imagine 49 or 50 for the next batch.

ThankssTom, I am off to the Scaletrains website

edit: ST website says $50. each. I am thinking about it. I have pre-ordered from ST b4 with no tax and free shipping if u spend enough it is worth it.

Messaged the guy that wanted both of my ST bulkheads. Sold him the second one so all 3 are now gone.

I will wait on pre-ordering as Hiawatha always has enough inventory the 1st month or so. I need to research better if these cars are still active in 2015. If they are then I have another reason to stop at Hiawatha. I don’t need 3 for the layout and to get free shipping I need 3 cars ordered to total over $100.
