Some ho modelers being too rigid

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

I wanna thank everyone who responded to this great thread, I really did not think this would go to 7 pages but it did. Thank you.
Btw the guys who complained about how the get together was run have formed their own group with 3 pages of rules that will be strictly in forced if we decided to attend. As far as I know none of us will attend. I wish them luck. I hope they have fun but I doubt it.

I don't have much to say here, only one thing ok maybe two. If you want your railroad to look a certain way then go for it. But the one thing I don't understand is the graffiti decals. I know it's prototypical but man it's ugly. On the real railroads it's a shame to see a consist coming down the rails and all you see is graffiti on the cars which takes away from the video or pictures you're trying to take (at least to me) and then people that want to put them on your models? And think it's cool or something. To me just makes it look like you just don't care about how your trains look. Weather them up and leave it at that, is what I say.

But to each it's own too. Have fun out there and keep'em rollin' my friend. :)

Sorry, edit. Not sure why the reply came out looking like Kgstakes is replying to himself. Must be a senior moment, I forget. TOMO
While I think graffiti anywhere is vandalism it is real and it’s on our rail car fleet. You can blame culture, parents, society or whatever I blame the railroads. There are paints available that graffiti would wash off in a rain. North American RRs won’t spend the money! Railroads paint cars white or yellow and those are a beautiful canvas for the graffiti artist/vandal. A railroad cop can question me taking pictures of a train from public real estate because “ you might be a terrorist” but ignore the team of 3 adding graffiti out in the open on a train car 100 yards away on RR property. Railroads basically will let graffiti stay if the reporting marks and numbers stay clean. UP and other leasing companies are putting the reporting marks higher up on the car side. Graffiti occurs because railroads let it. ( rant over)

Because of the modern era and the years I presently model 2015 to 2020 there is graffiti on my equipment both with decals or custom done by me. This is a thread discussing the craziness of overbearingly righteous model train guys and gals. There way or the highway. Do they have fun in this hobby? Almost every reply is it’s your railroad, run it your way. Graffiti is no different and I KNOW you are just saying it won’t happen on your trains. You are not saying to me iyou can’t do that! I’m fine with that and do not disagree. I do weathering as a side thingy! Most of my clients since 2018 have been modern era guys of who some are terribly conflicted about graffiti. I don’t judge, I weather to satisfy them. If they are happy, pay the commission and love it after they receive the actual model, so am I. But graffiti is one of those discussions that have no right or wrong even though the act itself in my eyes is illegal. It’s how you feel and no one has the right to criticize that choice. When I get asked should they add graffiti or not my standard reply is, it’s your model, what do u want me to do. I have had ungraffitied cars return to add the graffiti. Often it’s because the significant other has said, it’s missing. Have fun

Maybe they could use those rules for a historical museum piece, something that in centuries to come fix the essence of what a railway was in a specific very tightly focused setting.

I pity their grandkids though.

Yours is an ideal world, but graffitti is now part of our world, and so some modellers reflect that

We all have aspects we believe enhance our hobby
I have seen no steampunk layout here but personally they totally rock my boat.
I would appreciate those totally purist people admire them I just don’t admire them bullying other modellers
I have even see plonk and play layouts no scenic whatso ever that I have admire, yes probably more from time gone by, but we have so much to play with and that for me is the fun the fact we can diverge and have our personal space.
Give la difference.
But skill sets whether one’s cup of tea or not are still enviable skill sets.
Nice layout.
I personally see any excuse to try something new as a challenge….wiggles eyebrows.

Steampunk - I was too late to get one.

Well thank you David. It was fun, and sometimes these things need to be called out. Sadly, these guys are not the only ones. I watched a video from "That model railroad guy", and he got a letter from a viewer who had an experience with a "snooty group". But at least there are still the nice model railroaders like us!
Anyway, I hope the Tyrants have fun by themselves!

Ironic that your post was on seven when you wrote it but on page 8 when it uploaded.
apparently a lot of people have sympathy for the subject. And are willing to flaunt their own foibles.Maybe those bullies need to look up the definition LMAOI am glad though that enough of us agreed with you over the stick in derrière, their layout they choice that’s fine all agreed I believe, telling someone else that their choices are sub par, not acceptable.

Plus what if they had picked on someone who actually was sub par but wanted to be part of the hobby. how cruel is that. I make this point because on one forum I used to go there was a lad who struggled, and everyone was nice to him, and I bet anyone said a bad word and they would have been trounced. the lad in question did pictures was proud and happily commented most of the time no different from the rest of us, and if he made any obvious mistakes(‘he could not do DCC and struggled even then) people would really go out of their way to help him. he uplifted his picture often and I think may be downs, but he was nice and enthusiastic, and those who did not want to interact could scroll past.I think he was the official adopted grandson of many lonely modellers.

So far this forum has been great for me.
The people here have given me guidance, education, and shared their knowledge with me.

Since I am somewhat new to model railroading, and model roading layouts, this form has guided me for the things I need to know and understand to build my model road layout and such.

And one of the best parts of this forum and the people who participate, is no one has made fun of me, or criticize me, or put me down.

I know I can't thank everyone individually by name, but I do think everyone here for I've learned a lot just by reading over many posts

And again thanks to this form and everyone here who continues to give guidance and education.... And even laughter along the way. With respect and understanding.

I think I can speak for everyone here (hope so anyway), we all have a common goal. Make model railroading fun!!

I find many things here that are very helpful and I hope I share enough to help others as well. Sure we'll kid each other but nothing should be taken to hard to heart. Just recommendations, guidance, sharing ideas, and yeah a poke or a jab every now then by hey it's all in good fun.

We all have an interest in this hobby and others (like me) have other hobbies that we like to share and everyone is good with that as well.

Most important thing is, enjoy the hobby, ask questions, and relax. This world of ours is crazy enough as it is, let's not bring that here and spoil a good time.

Don't know how long you been with us but welcome!! Our door is always open and we will try to help in every way possible. Just ask.

It is each to his own, I read your thread regularly because your skills at weathering and representing graffitti which is a reflection of reality are seriously worth learning from.
I can do vanillla, I just love tutti fruitti

The no fun squad would/will probably go apoplectic when the see what I have making it's way through my paint shops right now, because it most definitely is NOT prototypical. I was going to save this for my "From the CM, MT & SL OCC Shops" thread, but I figure this is a good time and place for a little preview. Since I'm a bit of a kid at heart, this is a custom circus train inspired by an episode of what was and still is one of my all time favorite cartoons, "Ed, Edd n Eddy". It's a loving tribute to what in my opinion is a great cartoon.
Here's a screenshot from the episode for context.

And here's the cars that I've been working on. The last one is a work in progress, and I still have four cars to go. I have one other car that I completed, but it's a stock car, so it's just lettering because there's no place to put art on it. I did/am doing all of the art and lettering on them by hand, and it's all inspired by themes in various episodes, as well as character traits that have been seen or mentioned in one form or another.
