Terry, continuing to pray for you here.
And God was merciful to us tonight. My g'niece Nataley was driving home from dropping a friend off after the day together and someone pulled out in front of her. She is okay, had to get x-rays on her wrist, but nothing broken. We will know more tomorrow and I'm sure her volleyball coach will be sick as Nataley is one of her best players.

I remembered this one because I saw rain on the bathroom window. Which made me worry about the minor roof leak I have yet to address. I went into the attic to check, but everything including the container under the leak was as dry as an old bone. Apparently, it only leaks when the rain is extremely heavy. Which is good as I have yet to find a competent roofing mechanic to do the job.
Is this an asphalt roof. And is the leak just in the middle of the roof somewhere, or is it on an edge/seam?

I ask because sometimes when it is dry (really dry) and hot, the asphalt can melt and seal small cracks. Then I also had a leak on an edge where the flashing apparently hadn't been done right. I waited for a really dry spell and hit it with the "FlexSeal" clear spray stuff. Been dry ever since.

Does it happen if the wind is strong and only from one direction as well? My old office building was a converted warehouse from WWII and it would leak only under specific circumstances like standing on one foot, left hand behind your back and your right pinky pointing straight up.

Building maintenance couldn't figure it out.

good morning friends.
a black coffee for me please.

well no work on the layout today i guess.
supervisor aria decided to take a nap on my Z scale project :D

No unfortunately it is a shingle roof. A less than five-year-old roof! It leaked where a plumbing vent comes through the roof. The boot and or flashing around the pipe has failed. Or in this case I suspect it wasn't installed properly. Which is why I haven't requested a warranty repair. If they can't get it right the first time, I'm not giving them another chance.

This leaks into my attic where many of my trains are. A leak is unacceptable!

I know how to do the repair, but I'm no longer able to get on the roof to do it. Or should I say I'm no longer sure I can stay on the roof to complete the repair.

I'll keep talking to independent roofers until I find one who can explain to me the proper way to make the repair. There are no quick fixes for this kind of leak on a shingle roof.

I wish it were an asphalt roof. Thank you all the same.

I used to be an independent crane operator. I had a customer whose best roofing mechanic, the best I ever met! He insisted I be the only one to operate the crane when he worked as "the man in the bucket" I learned a lot from him and to show my gratitude for the easy money ($150 to show up, $75/hour until I returned their truck.) I often got on the roof with him to help. Not to mention it was fascinating watching the old expert work.

Many times, he didn't need me. He liked working with me. He knew I wouldn't mind stopping to get him Dunkin Donuts coffee on the way to the job and Popeye's chicken on the way back. He could dictate whatever he wanted. He was the only roof mechanic Verizon would accept here in the Mid-Atlantic. Verizon was a multi-million-dollar account for the roofing company he worked for.

His name was Harry; I still miss him as he is no longer with us. His ability to locate leaks was uncanny. I've seen him find leaks on the west side of a warehouse. With the water coming inside on the east side of the building. As Harry said "water travels" but he would always find the source of the leak. He had more than 40 years of experience when I met him.

Harvest of some things was great. I canned 30 pints of Green Beans and a lot of Tomato sauce that I didn't bother counting. The Onion harvest was also very good and the stored Onions should last until Christmas. The English Peas were adequate until an early May heat wave shut them down. They're quite sensitive to temperatures above 90° F, or 32° C in your world. Lettuce, Radish and Spinach made it until it got warm as well. The Yellow Squash was great and I still have one left in the fridge; however the Zucchini did not bear at all, despite hand pollination. The Jalapeno Peppers did alright, but the grasshoppers got the Bell Pepper plants before they had a chance to pollinate. Health issues took me down in mid-June and a couple of bushels of Tomatoes were left unpicked, although I had canned a lot before then. Other than the Tomatoes, most stuff doesn't grow here after the heat in mid-June.
Good harvest all things considered
Shame about the health
End of June and health were neck and neck
I think the weather is effecting a lot of people, cross fingers you improve
Husband and I resorted to vitamins during summer, we usually only start them late autumn and staying hydrating. we bought insulated cups for cool drinks for when outside, the humidity especially inside when cooking has been noticeably high.I resorted to air fry and slow cook when possible to stay out of the heat, and hot sticky nights interrupted sleep then made us feel worse
I opened the doors on woodburners to encourage airflow
Left curtains shut in rooms when not in use for coolness
Added net curtains in the conservatory using bamboo sticks and paracord
Did the window trick north and south for airflow
And had the loft door open to let it rise, luckily we have velux windows so they were cracked open too
Everything was on latches so as to not let burglars have a free rein
I understand poverty has increased petty theft even by neighbours
The last oil crisis our outside diesel went way too fast hence solar and woodburners

Bought early tomatoes struggled, self seeds compensated and were allowed to pop up
Zuccini and squash very good, i added borage and marigolds to draw pollinators (borage on a cold drink is doable but most just pretty and once too big ripped out)I grew excess, and stored in buckets (so if they go bad and wet liquid does not cause an issue also discourages mice) so I can cook for autumn winter use
sweetcorn small and dry fast too,
early peas were a non event enough to eat as I pottered none for kitchen,
early potatoes attacked but later ones ok,I have some in buckets to move into polytunnel later for a autumn harvest as long as they don’t dry out
Grapes are small and considering I bought the plant last year has phenomenal growth
I see a lot of south US farmers have abandoned almonds for pistachios
European droughts heatwaves and wildfires will hurt food prices our part of England has managed to dodge the worst
Family in Hungary effected farmers there have serious drought issues
But for many rent, heating / cooling bills, fuel for car, food bills are hurting and I know several who have had to give up on little luxuries just to get by :( I have seen people selling toys from childhood to make cash or so they claim
Very dry here but rain in July hit the spot saved the fruit trees peaches look good in photo but small and not really juicy only one small tree wild plums did amazingly pears are divine apples red and juicy de Nancy sweet and currents stayed on the bushes bird numbers very low this year water too low I guess
we are getting some now too but rivers and reservoirs very low

In Japan, they are having a rice shortage. The US has the natonal oil reserve to keep the fight going. Japan has the national rice reserve so that they can eat while sitting around. The govt has let some out to try to keep prices down, but the FNN has been driving the costs up as they provide farmers with every reason to hike the prices up. There is a rice price controlling czar that has to be negotiated with (even the govt) so that rice doesn't sky rocket. Un-real...

Then they have panels of rice experts on tv to say that the imported rice is crap so the believers steer away. Oh BTW, these rice experts are gold medal winning olympians. You win a gold medal and now you are the expert in US/NK relations - go figure. Now, I do taste the difference, but not only by brand but also by the method of cooking. My MIL's rice always tasted better than ours did and it was the same brand from the same place. She used a gas rice cooker so it cooked hotter and faster than our electric one. I haven't tried to cook US rice in a gas cooker yet as my wife already has it in her head that it's going to be crap, so I don't bother. I'm good with eating bread all day long.

Well, howdy there internet peeps and those appreciating how having a lady in the shop brightens the place up.

It's Troy again.

And thanks to JAZ for finding the RETURN key on her ipad. You're doing good. Much more readable when each thought is its own thing.

In other news, the steering committee of the gaming blog I edit for voted to end our publication at the end of the year. Site is paid for until March 2026, but we'll stop paying, so it will evaporate unless one of the staffers, or one of our other blogging friends wants to take it over.

It's been like pulling teeth from any angry badger to get the volunteer writers to actually write the last two years. With my gaming burnout, I announced to the committee I was done at the end of the year. One of the others said he was done. His father-in-law had just passed unexpectedly, so he was going to do family time this year. The other two weren't in the day-to-day grind of getting our stories written.

We just announced this to the staff. I expected they'd have stuff to say, but so far it's been quiet. We'll tell the public in a couple of months.

This comes on the heels of me turning in my tourney prize box, and other stuff to one of the game companies I used to demo for. I'm slowly unwinding from gaming. Only two more major commitments. And I'll keep one of them going. I just need to get out of the monthly or weekly commitments. That last one is the HMGS and I like hanging out with that group. Unfortunately, I'm in the fringes of their "coverage" area in this region.

The goal is to free me from the commitment cycle and pressure, and let me hobby at my own pace.

Wife said it's Steaks and Sweet Taters for dinner tonight, so I'll do a grocery run this morning.

Thats haha to the Jaz comment. The rest of it sucks with exception of the steaks.

steak night sounds nice!
@troyphoto may i ask, what you did in the gaming industrie and where? :)

Cheers
marco
I'll direct message you the names.

I was a demo rep for one of the historical gaming companines. I'm currently a demo rep for a fantasy gaming company.
NEITHER was Games Workshop, AKA the evil empire.

Demo reps are unpaid volunteers that grow gaming groups in their areas, run tourneys, help at gaming conventions. All to get a discount on gaming products.

Hope that helps. Like I said, I'll dm you the names of who I was associated with.

Good morning all!

Monday, Monday.....

A cool start to the morning at 42F, but will recover pretty nice with a high of 73F.

Busy day today. My daughter has Confirmation tonight. After Mass we will have people over, Have to set all that
up this morning and run out to get the cake I ordered last week. I picked everything else up at the store this
weekend.

Did spend a little time in the train room yesterday. Didnt do much on the layout, but I did run a few trains.

Have a safe day everyone!

Finding a good roofing contractor is hard no days. Actually finding a good contractor in general is difficult, and if you do find one they are booked out for several months.

Morning all,

60° and mostly clear. 78° and a possibility of some rain showers later. Believe them when I see them.

Should have know that just because I feel better doesn't mean hit it on high...lol. I woke up stiff and hurting in places I forgot I had, knees are fine however. Shoulders and hands are a bit stiff. I'll live.

Jaz: It was a good year in Kansas for peaches. No unexpected late frost and lots of rain for a change. I am down to only 1 tree, but it is a self pollinating freestone variety. I did like the looks of what you posted, wish I had the space and time to grow that much. Dad used to grow red currants and gooseberries. Did I also see quince and apricots?

Good Morning All. Clear and 60° out there this morning. These cooler days will last until Wednesday; high today just 85°. I know that's not cool to many, but to us it is.
Typical Sunday for me yesterday; church, empty the dishwasher, bed linen laundry and warm leftovers for supper. Add to that more weedeating and I spent 45 minutes mowing the front yard, slightly over 1 acre. Pool temperature is at 77°, so we're done with that for the season. Last year it was still in the 80's until October 5 or so.
Looks like more mowing today as I move to the south side of the estate, may feel inspired enough to get the west side between my hayfield and woodlot also. Monday is normally no household chores day for me.

Not a lot of time leftover for the train shed yesterday, but I did run a few more trains. Sent out a "sweeper" train as ATSF called them; to gather up empty freight cars from several industries along the main. One balky switch along the way was fixed by a drop of LaBelle #108 on the ground throw. I also vacuumed around the entry door where I had tracked in many grass clippings.

Karl - Hope that you're feeling better soon.
Tom O - Best wishes for Terry and family out in Maui.

Everyone have a marvelous Monday.
