Running Bear's October 2026 Coffee Shop

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

If you feel like messing with it, you could install a series of fence posts next to the steps so the tops are between waist and chest high, and secure a chain along the tops of the fence posts. It's cheaper than a handrailing, and is not something your neighbors would have--as well as being useful to grab if someone stumbles.
Nope. If I decided to add a rail I would pay someone to do it right. I may be in great physical shape, but I know my limitations. It's a steep grade dropping about 20' down to the bottom. 33 steps.

Ugh! Up at 3am local with a headache.

Told not to take Ibu while on the pain meds, so it's water and a tylenol.

Got a high pressure zone parked on us with the barometric going up. That's usually a sign for my head to ache. And the hurricane in the gulf hasn't even made landfall yet.

Good morning, Coffee Shop!
It's Friday, 48°F (8.9°C) and clear in Tipton.

Have a great day!;)

Good morning. It’s cloudy and 76, with a chance of hurricanes later in the week.
Today started poorly for many of us on the road. Somebody rolled their car over in the middle of the highway, resulting in the road being totally shut down. I, and a couple thousand of my new closest friends, had to take alternate routes and back roads to get to work. For me, it meant an hour and a half driver instead of 25 minutes. Of course, the person that flipped their car is arguably having a worse day…

Good morning all!

Happy Friday!

Mostly cloudy and 56F this morning. There is a chance of scattered rain showers later this morning, but if it happens it should only last an hour
or so, High today is around 75F.

Usual Friday chores around the house this morning, Daughter is off school today for some kind of state teachers institute . She also has Monday off
as well, so a 4 day weekend for her.

Nothing much else going on. Time to hit the first cup of coffee and enjoy the quiet since no one is up yet.

Have a safe day everyone!

I bet this would have applied.

In one week, I have lost all sense of time. I needed the computer to tell me what day it is. I'm more unstable moving around than usual. I'm fighting an uphill battle trying not to fall. All my energy has been lost from not sleeping well. It has only been since 9/14 that I could sleep for an hour before having to pee, often much less time. I'm up to hours now but every time I wake up, I can't fall back asleep. Instead of my body creating sleep deprivation torture my mind has taken over. Everything will return to normal when I see my little Angel sleeping next to me.

My mind maybe slipping into confusion, but all I need to do is turn on a ball game and it snaps back into baseball mode. The NFL game on Amazon didn't have the same impact. I enjoyed it but it is not baseball.

The Yankees scored 18 runs in two games against Boston. They only managed three runs in the three games with the Rays. All of the three runs came in the final game of the series with the Rays. Pitching makes all the difference. The Rays made the pitches when needed and the Yankees did not.

As it always has been and always will be; the guy on the mound can block the path to winning a Championship.

This Clevelnad team refuses go away! The White Sox always go down fighting. I expect an epic battle to decide this series. It will be interesting to see if one of the pitchers takes it upon himself to shut the other team down. You don't have to strike everybody out, just avoid loud contact. If I were a gambling man, I would put a few dollars on Moon-Shot hitting a big homerun! If you make a mistake to him, he usually doesn't miss it.

In the playoffs a team can ride three good starters and a good bullpen all the way to the Championship. The Brewers or even the Rays could do just that.

The Dodgers vs the Brewers should be interesting as I expect it to go back and forth. This time the Brewers have better starting pitchers than they had in the past. This Brewers' rotation may not be as deep as in years past, but the top of the rotation is better than ever.

What if? The Brewers and the Rays... we could have a small ball series, that would be different! You never know, they could combine for a dozen homeruns. It depends on the pitches they see. Every MLB hitter can launch one coming down Broadway.

My pretty little Angel is one her way home. God willing I will be picking her up a Dulles this afternoon. I won't mind the Friday traffic so much knowing my Angel is waiting for me on the other side.

I did sleep pretty good last night. I will take a nap or two to be ready for the drive.

This song popped into my head... fitting!

Enjoy your day Everybody!

A good exercise climber. Do that 10 times up and 10 times down daily and after a month we’d all have new bodies though that may cause some of those bodies to turn into ash! The new steps look great

@TLOC so tom i see your creating sisal bushes :)

those are my versions of them. But i will try another badge, with only one rope and not 3.
did you glue them with hot glue? because i still try to find a way to glue them fast so they dont fall apart. so far i used woodglue or ca...

cheers

Marco

I cut the sisal twine into 3” pieces then I took 2 pieces and hot glued the 1st .25” (1/4”) of each end and let them dry before cutting the pieces in half at 1.5”

The hot glued clumping I didn’t worry about as I will insert deep enough to cover the clump

Unraveled the twine, teased it out and will trim it and spray it. These are to be applied in a swamp (wetlands) and will not be anywhere as full or good looking as your bushes. Mine were meant to be thin and ugly

I can tell you IMOO these are too much work and in the same amount of time working with the sisal I would have made 1.5 times as many wire armatures. But they definitely are less expensive material wise

There is a friend and his wife who also made some sisal conifers and bushes. The sisal conifers look great but I have not yet seen the 50 bushes. They clamped 2 pieces of twine and dipped in full strength white glue and hung them to dry with clothes pins. That is too clumsy and even more time consuming for me to try.

Today my plan is to make some paper birch saplings. I’m going to try 5 out of wire, 5 from 6” sisal twine and 5 from branches of a dead nine bark bush we had that I will basically just dry in the oven, drill a few branches and glue some 12mm static grass onto the newly inserted wire branches.

Too bad you can’t sell your sisal bushes in the USA

thank you @TLOC tom for the explanation. the problem i have with the wire things, i still did not find a way to create good looking wire bushes. i dont know where iam missing something in my process but i just cant get it to work. also for the wire trees...iam somehow have a blockade in starting the right way i think... dont ask me why...

i mean, i can send you some, that should not be a problem.
i just dont know if it would work with the shipping and stuff...

Good morning Crew. It’s 46f degrees and they are saying 70 for the high. This is the 1st morning I believe that is not bright and sunny since our rains of 10 days ago. The weather here has been nice and was gorgeous looking.

Not good news at Terry’s medical meeting with the pulmonologist and oncologist. Her 42 years of a pack a day has caught up with her. She quit 15 years ago but… As usual she is handling it better externally than I would but I know her and she is nervous. Biopsy is next week.

The grandson went through a big range of emotions over his hockey tryouts this week. He really wanted to play with his 3 best friends. The goalie is a girl (buddette to me) and her tryouts were all Summer as the goalies were evaluated during each Summer league game they played. Not fair as no defense is played in Summer League they all think they are Bobby Orr or Cale Makar out on the ice. They are not. She knew she was the primary A team goalie. His 2 best male friends (the buds to me) were a definite A team and one a bubble A. The definite A is Brooks best friend since pre-school day care at age 3. He told Brooks after soccer Sunday that he was determined to be on the AA team because he was the best of the 4 of them and to stay out of his way. Then did not talk to him during Monday or Tuesday tryouts or at school. The SIL said Brooks was baffled but talked to mom and dad about it and they said just do your best and don’t hold back. At tryouts the best friend’s dad avoided the SIL as they both could be in attendance. Wednesday’s scrimmage against another league team was good. His friend scored 2 times on passes direct from Brooks called the primary assist. Brooks had 4 assists all game and hit 2 posts (his speciality it seems). I did not stay for the second game. He scored twice not playing on a line with his best friend. His friend had no points. Thursday the buddette at school told Brooks she was going to be the AA goalie as the original kid was going to play on the high school team as their 3nd goalie because the high school starter got poached by another team offering better NIL money so he transferred schools in Open Enrollment this week. Anyway with his best friend not talking to him he was at the rink at 4 yesterday for his 5pm game. The AA coach told him not to say a word but he made the AA team and have fun playing. His dad told me he also was told but didn’t tell me until after the 1st game though I was there. Brooks had 3 goals and 3 assists in a wild offensive game. He fed his best friend anyway passes for 2 goals. Score was 12-8 and it was fun to watch. The second game last night started at 8:30 and the SIL texted me during the game. Terry was watching the scrimmage streaming on Live Barn and he did not play the 2nd half as it turns out most of the to be announced this morning A team players finished the game. This morning everyone on the Association email list got the list of all the teams and who the players are. Brooks is the youngest player on the AA team and at 5’5” the shortest but one of the best and fastest players. His best friend is on the A team and the 3rd buddy is actually on the B team which somewhat surprises me but I thought was bubble. Turns out he was bubble B/C. His parents were hoping he was placed on the B or C per the daughter as there is less B/C team travel. We will see how this 4 friend dynamic plays out. He is the youngest on the AA team but has played on various teams over the years with most of them including the 9 freshman that were told to play one more year of youth hockey Bantams. Open enrollment for our schools ends next week and there is always the possibly that another high school player or 2 may switch schools. That could move a player or 2 up from the AA team which would cause movement on all the teams. Each of the AA, A and B teams carry 12 skaters and at least 1 goalie, the C team has 16 skaters and 3 goalies. Wisconsin allows NIL (name, imagine, likeness) money for high school athletes starting last year and the good athletes are looking at the money and moving

Sorry about the long story but I was concerned about him and the strange change from his best friend. He’ll adjust as he was aware this Summer his best friend may have been moving. Best friends mom was the Chief of Staff in the University of Wisconsin Athletic Department. When the AD quit for a job in Chicago with the Big Ten office it was talked about. When the UW finally hired a new outside AD without interviewing any of the then current staff she saw the writing on the wall. She works from home for now as special projects coordinator for the Big Ten for her old boss and still may end up moving. But no one expected the break up because of tryouts though.

Thank you Marco. A value (price) for bushes must be shown on the shipping forms and I’d gladly pay but shipping costs plus the tariffs on Swiss products are very high and not worth it at this time. Maybe in 2.5 years we can try

Sorry about Terry. Positive thoughts for benign results. Nicki smoked on and off for about the same amount of time and has the start of some issues. She goes in annually to have the "benign for now" nodes in her lungs checked.

Good Morning All from Galveston TX, where it is clear, sunny and 76°. Back home it's clear and 68°.

Well, Jim Cantore made it to the Gulf coast in Pensacola FL. So the hurricane path took a slight jar east towards him and the direct hit is now east of where we were going to go. Of course, all things with hurricanes can change and conditions can spread for some distance.

Todays plan includes heading first to the Galveston Railroad Museum and looking at real things and several model railroad layouts. Then a few blocks away to the Galveston County Museum, to tour their hurricane displays, specifically the one documenting the Hurricane of 1900.

Karl - Have a safe and enjoyable trip.
Michael - Good luck with the current UTI. Take it easy and it will smooth your recovery.
Kevin - Not sure about the zombies??? All I know is that I have been to Texas Roadhouses all across the south, and every one is quite noisy! This one had a very low noise level.
Troy - It's interesting that Geddy's singing didn't especially bother me in the 70's and 80's. It does sound more grating now. Perhaps it's the remastering?
Louis - My best wishes to Angela for a safe trip home.
Tom O - My prayers and best wishes for Terry.

The late John Lennon of the Beatles for you younger members, was born on this day in 1940. The late John Entwistle, bassist for The Who, was born in 1944. Singer/songwriter Jackson Browne is 78 today.

Everyone have a wonderful Friday.

The real Agate Falls are 7 steps. Approximately 42’ from rail head to water. The falls then drop over the 7 steps another 40’. The former rail now a walking bridge is 208’ long. We will use a ME trestle bridge kit that is 210. While we are not trying to be exact the closeness to scale is pretty interesting. Once we get the drop in frame in my shop we are looking at a 90 day build. But as a team we will not set any must have dates. Those days are done

Here are the real Falls View attachment 275091View attachment 275092
WOW! Those are breathtaking! I can see why they want those included at your club.
We are taking it easy this morning, might take a drive to Searcy for Zaxby's and a little shopping. Gonna work some more on the new storage bin/drawer things, hopefully the other two will show up today. Working on coffee right now. Prayers for all of those in Isaias' path.
Some good news when I stepped on the scale, I'm back under 350#, which is still fat, but at least I am back losing weight again.Started at 435, so this is progress.
