While they look menacing and were effective, I can't see how having those wings would prove helpful. A gust of wind to throw off an aim or balance?
They were so heavy and had especially bred horses to carry them, a gust of wind would not affect them. Those wings actually had a purpose, when the Hussars were galloping into battle, the wings would create a loud noise like a storm wind, bewildering the enemy. This is what i heard at least.

They would have to be extraordinarily strong to overcome the weight if they were unhorsed. Sword fighting is tiring work, or so I hear.

The howling noise is pretty neat!
Psychological impact
Shock and awe! Can understand that!

Good morning from chilled but not frozen yet So. Central Wisconsin. It’s 37f degrees feels like 30 and heading to a very nice Autumn 68 degrees. It’s clear and actually in pj bottoms and a T-shirt it didn’t feel too bad out there when I took the garbage bin to the curb at 7am

Today is finish the Swing Bridge project. I have minus the final weathering maybe 30-60 minutes left on it. It will get weathered (rust and streaking) on the backside the way I would like to see a 3-9 year old bridge be weathered. The aisle facing side will just get a hit of weathering with very few spots of rust and dirt streaking. Since it’s going to be displayed at the entrance to the train room it will get seen. The owner is a month At least (or Wednesday) from completing the mainline track past his paper mill where the bridge fits. He is now obsessed with this scene like I sort of have become. So he can turn the bridge to the more weathered side and then decide what he wants. I figure maybe 2-3 hours of weathering work when he gives it back to me. But I think it to needs to sit in the location for a week or preferably 4 weeks which would cover at least 2 full group work sessions. He can gather opinions of which our group has plenty. The bridge abutments are separate and those should not take too long in actual time. Depending on exactly where he fits the bridge in the scene will determine the approach bridges. Those will be Micro Engineering 50’ double track through bridges but one will probably be cut down so we need to finish the scene before I can build those. He spent most of yesterday working in the 4’ scene area. The 50’ girder bridges should take maybe a day at the bench to build, dry and lightly weather. He did text around 11:15 last night if we should scenic the scene. Then asked if I wanted to do it. Then before I could even answer said he’ll paint the river bed Monday (today) and stop at the LHS for the Woodland Scenic water kit. We haven’t even discussed the backdrop scene but his daughter will be there Tuesday when I bring the bridge over. She can paint a scene on the backdrop or bash a few photos together, she’s very talented

Yesterday we went to Volleyball on campus and the Badger Women lost. The only other team in 6 seasons Terry and I have seen them lose at home in the Fieldhouse is the biggest rival, Nebraska. Losing to USC yesterday just wasn’t pretty. But it’s why they play the games. Those rankings mean nothing when they are out on the floor. Yesterday morning in the rain and low 40’s the grandson’s soccer team won convincingly. It was away so we didn’t go but the daughter said it was like 12-0 and he had 2 goals when the coach took his 4 front line guys and put them on defense and said they could only pass the ball and not go beyond the half line. Then at 5:30 they traveled to Milwaukee for his 1st regular Fall league hockey game. He scored in the 1st minute and later in the 2nd period of the game winning 6-1 we watched the game on some streaming app. So he had a good sports weekend

I usually have taken in the outdoor furniture by now but they are predicting 70’s this week. I do like sitting outside but I feel like I’m pushing it. So maybe this afternoon

Enjoy the day

Yup, Kato.

Consider it payback for the GE4/4 you goaded me into buying! haha! Thanks btw, it led to the ABe and Bernina Express stuff. Awesome looking! And I think I have an idea of how to run them after watching some of RHB's videos.
Yeah the RhB stuff is fun. I don’t have Bernina / Allegra stuff (yet). Just a whole stable of Ge 4/4 II and III and glacier express wagons and older EW I wagons.

I’m sitting here at Discount Tire this morning getting a slow leak on the wife’s car fixed and rotating them. I wanted to get here before they open but, while I wet the time on my alarm last night, I forgot to actually set it to go off. So I got up 20 min later than planned. I still got here only about 5 min after they opened and they still had an open bay. So I got in quickly. In fact it is my 8:23 and they have it rotated. They’re not seeing a leak in the water bath so we talked about it. They’re taking it off for a physical inside inspection. Quick service and they’re close to the house.

Two first technical interviews today. Wish me luck.

Good morning all!

A cool week ahead. Currently its 46F heading up to a high od 65. Today may be the warmest for the next 10 days.

Yesterdays rain and windy conditions did bring down some leaves, but not enough to drag the mower and bagger out.
Maybe by the weekend. Have a few things to get done yet this morning, but most has already been accomplished.

No volleyball game tonight, so I will venture downstairs after supper and set a couple unit trains up to run this week.

Not much else happening in my world, which is welcome!

Have a safe day everyone!

Good Morning All. Clear and 58° here in Gulf Shores, heading to 75° later on. It's a rather chilly morning here with a very stiff north wind, yellow flags are flying on the beach and there is a small craft warning. Back home, it's clear and 54° and headed up to 92°.

Nothing planned for today yet. Wife needs to go to the grocery store, so that's a probability. While we have discussed places to eat, nothing has been determined yet either. Last night we met up with our usual vacation buddies, 2 couples and 2 other ladies and had dinner at a really off the beaten path place that was packed. It was at the end of a gravel road on a bayou of some sort. I had never been there before, but some of our companions had been. The food was excellent. It was a combination steak and seafood type of place. I had a superb Rib-eye cooked perfectly. Wife had Shrimp & Grits.

Terry - You posted about the Europeans not serving water which I noticed when there; but worse yet, at least to me, was they served their beer at room temperature! Me and a traveling companion were in Austria on business, staying at a "gasthaus" with a restaurant, and we told the owner that we were from America. He said OK, I will cool your beer. For the rest of our stay, he had cold beer. Our escort later apologized for not telling the owner ahead of time so our beer could be cold the first night.
Mike -
They wouldn't be able to let minors serve it, and
some of the managers aren't much older than the staff.
In Texas, servers of alcohol can be between 18 and 21, but they cannot consume it.
John - While I haven't ever attended the "Cruisin the Coast" event in Gulfport, I have witnessed the steady parade of cars leaving the event and traveling north on US-49 after the event. Both cars traveling on trailers and ones being driven under their own power. Our annual vacation time is fluid and the travel time sometimes overlaps that event. I also use US-49 to get to Traintastic and a Pizza joint that we like in downtown. I also use it if we take the northern route (IH-20) to travel on when we want to avoid the LSU home game traffic in Baton Rouge.

Posting a little later this morning because I have trouble with the keyboard on this laptop. I have to SEE the keys, despite using keyboards since typewriters back in the 60's. I just never learned the touch/type method. I'll get used to this by the time I return home to my usual keyboard!

The late singer/guitarist Tom Petty, was born on this day in 1950.
Everyone have a great Monday.

Willie, it's usually served a little below room temp. I mean unless they keep the room at 55°F-60°F. The flavor is always better as it warms up. Something you can't do with domestic piss water.

A chilly 45°F earlier this morning. It is now 64°F on the way to a guessed-at high of 74°F. I don't think we will see 70°F today. It is a beatiful sunny day though, and I'm going to fire up the grill after this post for some hamburgers and bratwurst.

Have a great day everyone!

Our Pils was served chilled on land and on the boat.

Chilled, cool, room temp, ice cold, all different subjective temperatures.

Mine is chilled too right out of the fridge. I would guess in the neighborhood of 45°F. I take one out and let it sit for 15 minutes or so before opening it. The more you drink though, the harder it is to remember to do that for each one. 🤪

I'm not a fan of ice-cold German Bier. Or even chilled. Cool would be more the way I like it.

Years ago, when I was doing draft beer serivice at Memorial Stadium I had the honor and privilege of meeting and talking to one of Anheuser Busch's Brewmasters. He told me that the ideal temperature for most quality American lager beer is 45F.

American lagers should be between 36–38F when served through typical draft system. That will provide the most reliable flow. And give the American consumer with the taste they prefer; crisp and refreshing.

American Lagers. Pilsners and other pale Lagers served in bottles or cans should be between 38–45F, cold enough to stay sharp, but warm enough to let the malt and hops show through.

Darker or stronger lagers (Bocks, Marzens, etc.): 45–50°F Just a bit warmer so the richer malt flavors can open up.

At temperatures above 50F a few things begin to happen.

The refreshing “snap” that defines lagers begins to fade. They can taste heavier or even a little sweeter.

The delicate bitterness and floral notes of hops flatten out, leaving the beer less lively.

The beer loses carbonation more quickly, so it can feel flatter.

Foam stability drops, head retention weakens, making the pour look less appealing.

Warmer temperatures bring out more caramel, bread, or grain notes, which can overwhelm the balance.

If stored warm for extended periods, lager beer is more vulnerable to microbial risk: spoilage organisms.

Lager beer is the broad family of beers brewed with bottom‑fermenting yeast at cooler temperatures, which gives them their clean, crisp profile.

Begining in the 15th century brewers in Bavaria discovered that storing beer in cool caves and cellars over the summer months produced a smoother, more stable drink. The German word lagern means “to store”, hence the name, lager.

Pilsner is a sub‑style of lager, first brewed in 1842 in the city of Plzen (Pilsen) in what’s now the Czech Republic.

Chad - Good luck with the interviews.

Thanks to everyone who wished me well!

The first one was ok I think. I wasn't able to answer all the questions because of the time elapsed since the events and the fact I've not been at the company for 7 1/2 months or more, but I talked with him about it and answered them the best I could. Technical questions I was able to answer. It was "tell me about a time you had a customer escalation -- how did you go about solving it. We had a ton of customer escalators and each one was different and I don't remember the details. But I did go over our processes and stuff so I think he understood. We'll see. I need a job so would take one if they offered but they are on the low end of the pay scale.

The second interview -- I logged in to the Google meets link but no one showed up. I logged in a few minutes earlier and waited until 16 after the hour and I immediately emailed the interview coordinator and the recruiter telling them that I was there and no one showed up and asked if we could reschedule. I didn't blame anyone -- I just wanted them to know I was there in case I had a bad link or the two other people on the interview had a bad link and I did not show up to the meeting they were in. I did not want them to think I had given up on them. Hopefully they get back to me and we reschedule.

I also had a recruiter reach out to me about a contract that could be long term so I will be sending him data, and I'm trying to follow up still with the two interviews I had 3 1/2 weeks ago that I've heard nothing from. When I followed up a week ago the coordinator who arranged it (the only contact I had) said he forwarded it to the recruiter, who would get back to me. Nothing happened so I followed up again Friday afternoon and this morning got the same reply from the coordinator. So we'll see. The other interview I had followed up with a week ago last Friday and heard nothing so I followed up again this past Friday and got a "vacation mail" back that he was out of the office, so hopefully I'll hear something back later this week when he is back.

Thats the update for now. Sunny with blue skies but only 53F out. This week should be warmer (coolest day today) but supposedly more rain next weekend... With the gravel being put into my window well by a neighbor with a 4 wheeler and trailer this past Saturday, I can now stick a ladder in and finish off the side of the wall above the window itself with the acrylic stucco stuff and waterproofing. This is a second treatment -- we had the first a couple years ago but when I finished the part around the window I used a gray color instead of the linen color due to the house color being different than originally planned, so I am putting this same gray all the way up. Eventually we'll put it all the way around the house but not now.

I need to finish getting the snow melt electronics controllers installed now that the tubes are attached to the manifold. Also need to get the tubes from the enclosed porch room hooked to the tubes from the interior manifold and get the actuators put on so that we can control each zone instead of having one large house zone...

So much to do

Evening fellers. I hope everyone is doing well. I'm trying to stop by more when I get a chance. Haven't done too much trains wise. At least not yet anyways. I received some decals today. Hopefully I can get around to completing my GM50 locomotive now.

That's all I have for now. I'll stop again when I get a chance. Hope everyone has a good night.
