A friend asked for a few photos of the end of a centre-beam. Not sure if I ever posted these. As Jed Clampet once said though, 'They're just as good the second time around'.

If more are needed, I'll have to search through my 2020/21 files. Let me know; I've probably got more.

I'm really tired. Time for some sleep. Goodnight

Superb pictures! Thank you for sharing these! I like all the shots you provided! I will be using these examples. Awesome!

EDIT:::

Interesting I was looking at the wire cables on each car you provided. I see that on the ends they doubled back on a hook to the winch then on the middle section where there is an opeing to the otherside they go through and down to the winch. I was thinking the cables were attached some how to the holes/notches in the vertical beams but these are not. Nice having these pictures. Thank you again.

Now at $510.00 and still 5 days to go ??

$583 BUCKS aaaaand still going up.....!

Good afternoon folks!

I am working from home today. I am a bit of a ZOMBIE. I stayed up all night as my sister was going for her heart surgery. It was set at 7 am UK time and USA time was 2 am. 5 hour difference. Anyways she got there and started the process of admission then they had to turn her away due to overcrowding in the hospital! No rooms or beds available in ICU or post op rooms. Unbelivable what a sh!t show! So now they re-scheduled her for November 14 th. I guess that is what happens when you have socialized medicine and influx of immigration/migrants or whatever. The hospitals cannot support that influx there. Unreal. I am pissed off. She needs the surgery and her situation is life threatening. I want her to come back state side to do it. she is only 55. Ugh my frustration and stress level is high. Already lost my baby sister as some of you know on August 30th and I cannot handle losing my big sister too. Breathe....

In the train world. I have a few more items coming in here and there. That is slowing down. The guy I bought the super dome car on Sept 30th finally shipped out my car today! Thank goodness it is coming from Maryland. So I should have it by Friday. I got a few items off FB market place. There has been a influx or rather a huge surge of people selling on FB Market place I notice as of late. Some are pretty fair deals other not so much. Some are actually outrageous like Ebay. Buyer beware. I managed to score 2 more caboose. One a Bluford Shops for 50 bucks and the other a Walthers Platinum Line 30 bucks. I will post on RPO when I get them. I also got off Ebay...very surprised.... an Athearn RTR #79974 Atlanta & St Andrew’s Bay Line GP38-2 ASAB 510 with a custom DCC & SOUND installed no info on the decoder but was guaranteed tested and run under the programed engine number. I got it for less than 175. This will serve my north interchange on my layout which will fit in great! Saved me the work of installing DCC & sound too.

I almost got my fall to winter chores done. I have to finish stacking firewood and then clean the garage. That's it! Then I can transition to working on projects in the house. I got a new kitchen faucet on clearance from Lowes to install. My old faucet ....well is old and does not have a sprayer. This new faucet is an all in one deal with a sprayer. Was 129 and I got it for 41 dollars plus tax. That'll do!

I will be taking some time off soon just to stay home and putz around in the train room. I am just waiting on how things go with my sister first.

In the mean time I have been getting some time in the train room here and there just cleaning and organizing.

Ya'll have a good rest of the day.

[Edit to add] Sgt. Smith was a great leader. One of those kind of people who made you feel smarter after you make a mistake. He taught us how to repel, and how to make your own swiss seat from a 6' length of rope. We didn't just repel... we learned how to walk down the side of a wall, using nothing but a rope, and your uniform as a tool. Now... Culver had a really nice indoor riding arena for their Black Horse Troop, and we would learn how to do all this by using the interior walls with all that soft sandy soil at the bottom to cushion the fall from 10 feet up, LOL. I can tie a bowline around my chest using only one hand thanks to him

I was a little bit later (being around 9 when Saigon fell [and the US had been out a while already]) and did not attend a military school, but as a teenage and Boy Scout, our church congregation and boy scout troop (sponsored by said congregation) included a US Army military base that was one of the homes for the 10th Special Forces Group, and a few of our scout leaders were also SF soldiers, some of whom had been in Vietnam. Anyway, we went repelling a few times, and learned the one piece of rope swiss seat making and all that under their tutelage. We also used the army bases repelling tower to learn on as well as some local state park cliffs that were popular with rock climbers. And how to make rope bridges that were NOT in the scout handbook (but which had been used in Vietnam etc). It was great fun as a teenager and a scout at the time to have these warriors taking their time to share with us their experiences and knowledge (and access).

To this day, I look back on M.Sgt.. Smith as one of my most treasured mentors. He was a man's man, but soft spoken. My senior year, I was up for Regimental Commander for final rank (highest ranking cadet). M.Sgt Smith convinced me that being Company Commander would give me better experience than being Battalion Commander, let alone Regimental Commander. So, I took my name out of the Regimental Commander hat in order to be Company Commander. He knew being responsible for 60-70 kids directly would be better than being in charge of 3 battalion commanders.

Good afternoon. James that sucks but that has been fairly common Stateside since Covid and the surge in illegals over the past 6 years. So $50 is a good price on Bluford caboose? I was going to last week forward you a FB listing that had 3 for $50 each, sorry, my bad! Also had some brass caboose.

As some of you know, I love the Twin Ports of Duluth, Mn/Superior, Wi.. I have been known to sit in one of my portable chairs for hours if I know an oreboat or 2 will be coming through. I caught this on live harbor cam a few minutes ago. A barge/tug combination. I have not seen this through the canal before either in person at Canal Park or live on the harbor cams.

The bridge tender announced during the canal transit that the Michigan Trader barge was carrying limestone and would unload at one of the aggregate docks. It was then expected to sail at midnight to Silver Bay, Minnesota for Taconite pellets. The self unloading boom sure has changed the shipping business

Afternoon All,

This morning I spent several hours patching previously ballasted track. I can definitely see the improvement in ballasting in later applications. I think my biggest issue early on was that I wasn't using enough of the thinned glue. After lunch I decided to watch some Acorn TV on my laptop. It is still hit and miss on the TV. I want to get a Firestick and see if that will make a difference (can be returned) but the wife is adamant that she doesn't want to get one. :(

Patrick- Ballasting is one of the never ending chores.

George- Your wiring is a lot neater than mine. I also used the same color for extensions that the original wire lead was.

Guy- Great detailed photos and your layout (current stage) looks good to me.

Dave- Thank you. That is a nice looking box car.

Jeff- Enjoy your red meat. I was in the BSA in El Paso on the base. We got to do some neat stuff with the Army support.

TomO- I was pretty much the same going to HS 1970-1974. I had 3 family members go there including Dad. None of them talk about it. I remember like yesterday all the video and photos from the war. The absolute worst though was the screen the national news displayed weekly showing America's dead, wounded and missing. Tragic. The way the soldiers were treated coming home was beyond disgraceful and the scum that did that should rot in hell (along with Jane Fonda). Just my opinion. I joined the Navy in 1974.

Willie- Nice scenes.

George/Louis- Good luck with the faucets.

I hope everyone has a good night.

Good afternoon, all! A very overcast day here in Houston. A strong storm front is due to blow through in the wee hours tonight.

The Yankee fans were chanting "we want Houston", I believe they got more Houston than they wanted. Now the Philly fans are chanting, "we want Houston". Were they no watching the ALCS?
Obviously, Houston wasn't watching the Phillies either...Every series, they beat a supposedly superior team. Yankees have been out of gas since August, Phillies OTOH, were building up momentum. Go Phillies!

Curt, lots of disgraceful things were happening back then! None of the military deserved the homecoming treatments they received. They should have treated the politicans the same way.

I know many credit WalterrCronkite because he said the American people needed to see the coffins coming off the planes on nightly news.

I had 3 classmates die in SoutheastAsia but only one one died in VietNam. The other 2 died together when their platoon got ambushed in Cambodia, which of course we never fought in.

Totally sad.

I wish to thank any serviceman or woman we have here on the forums for your service. I am forever grateful

Our local Pick and Save is now owned by Kroger and IMO that is not a good thing. Anyhow, they have 12 self check out spots and 4 cashier staffed lines. But in the last year I have not seen more then 1 cash register staffed and there is no bagger. Terry will only buy stuff on a great sale and we will wait in the cashier staffed line.
That's the way it was here, except ACME and Shoprite. The local Walmart has two separate automated checkouts, one fro grocery the other for general merchandise. one had 8 kiosks the other 16. About 50% either credit card only or broken. 16 Cashier lines, 2 staffed, 1 for tobacco products and express line, the other for big orders. If the lines back up, they will not add additional checkers, but they have people checking receipts at exits. The new bag law has really upset the apple cart here, because they cannot control bagging.

Sorry to hear about your sisters delayed surgery, I know it's not what you or your sister wanted to hear, but let me clarify, our system is weird and definitely not wonderful at the moment at least, there is a backlog of people awaiting surgery in the 4 million mark,(or 18-24 month waiting list) mainly due to the pandemic, and what is termed Social Care, or lack thereof at the moment, this is for the more vulnerable patients who will require some form of daily care at home after being discharged from the hospital, BUT, therein lies the problem.

We don't have the care/social or home care nurses that we need to deal with the number who are fit enough to be discharged, and unless that care is in place hospitals cannot discharge them, even though they're well enough to go home, so they're stuck in a hospital most don't want to be in, occupying beds that are badly needed for other patients who need some form of surgery, basically the system is grid locked at the moment.
The reason your sister would have got so far into the system when she went, is because the hospital expected to have a bed available for her, and they would not have known there would be no bed until quite literally, the last minute, probably due to the reason's I said earlier.

If the surgery is postponed again, see if you can persuade your sister to fly back to the US, or even have the surgery done in the UK at a private hospital, if I can help in any way, don't hesitate, I'm 2 1/2 hrs from your sister if needed.

Afternoon all,

Has been busy but almost quitin' time!

BBQ brisket for dinner tonight. We were still arguing whether it's over a baked potato or as a sandwich.

I served between Vietnam and Desert Storm, I was in 8th grade when Saigon fell. One of my first bosses had PSD bad. Nearly every time the computerized Cash register\inventory control system glitched and squealed, he'd go off. Not much help as an 18 year old kid working the dinner rush at Long John Silver's when it happened.

The $600+ eBay train car is way outta my league. I'm lucky I could afford some of the junk I got. Which reminds me. I gotta get rid of some I won't use.

Good afternoon, all! Well the storms blew through early this morning, but not the threating thing the guessers were forecasting. Only got 1/4" of rain, a couple of good gusts, and no thunder.

Did a little switching yesterday. Working on possibly adding a short tunnel. Remains to be seen if it stays.

Boris - no this is not the cheating team ............. please put away any lose trash cans.😈😈😈😈👿👿👿
