1963. Working and helping my uncle to earn extra money on top of my salary. I used to work 5 or six day weeks; sometimes seven.
I was outside by my car, loading equipment to conduct a practice session of the AFROTC cadet smallbore rifle team. Two guys who also roomed in the off-campus house at my college, came out and said, "The president has been shot!"
I replied, "Don't even kid about something like that!" They assured me it was true, and we ran up to the third floor where our TV room was located. There was no indication as to how seriously Kennedy was hurt. I had to make a decision whether to gather the cadet team and go out to the National Guard armory for the practice. I decided that the Commander-In-Chief would want us to continue the mission. I took a portable radio, and when we arrived, the news came that the president was dead!

Days later, I was at the local airport, having just returned from a flying session, when we heard that Lee Harvey Oswald had been killed!

Things have never been the same since.

Tomorrow morning the wife and I are off to Japan to get our son and do a small amount of touring. This won't be as long as our normal family trips but we'll return on December 5.

We fly via San Francisco to Narita airport in Tokyo, and then a domestic flight to Sapporo. We arrive Monday night Japan time (which is 16 hours ahead of our local time). Scheduled time from Utah to Sapporo is almost 20 hours (2 stops). We'll get him Tuesday morning, and we're in that area until Thursday night. Domestic flight on SKymark Thursday to Kobe where we'll stay with teh wife's sister and her husband until Tuesday. In Kobe on Friday I hope to visit a train store called Rail Gallery Rokko (Rokko being the part of Kobe the store is located in). I visit there every time and get a few things. Until I get a job I'm not a big spender but I'll get a couple containers.

Tuesday we take the bullet train to Yokohama and visit the wife's other sister (and maybe meet up with a few people form forums). Then a short jaunt to Tokyo Wednesday (an hour or less by normal train -- Yokohama a is part of the great Metro area of Tokyo) and 2 nights there to do whatever the boy wants to do. The sister in law also will be with us. Friday a flight back via Seattle to SLC from Tokyo.

I'm trying hard to get everything packed and ready and stuff today so I'm not running around like a chicken with his head cut off tomorrow morning as we need to be on the road before 6am.

Even though I have all the flight info, hotel reservations, etc online I am printing everything out on paper as a backup. One of my chores for today.

Good Morning All. Clear and 45° out there this morning. No real change in our forecast except the high today has been revised downward to 66°. Still expecting heavy thunderstorms starting around dusk tomorrow and lasting overnight, with a 2" total predicted. At least it's not snow! It has snowed here in November but it's rare. Our first snow if we get any at all, is usually in January

If you're old enough to remember this, it's time to ask what were you doing on this day back in 1963? I was at recess playing football with classmates in the 7th grade.

Ho-hum day yesterday around here. Did a load of laundry, burned the burn trash and did a little more work on the compost pile. Finished emptying the car of the non-refrigerated groceries that I didn't unload in the rain Thursday. Mother Nature did a good job of washing both cars! I chose to wait until today to prepare the Prime Rib roast for supper, in order to clear some leftovers out of the fridge instead. Looking forward to doing that today. No real plan for today either. Might just head out to the roadside and cut down a tree that was damaged by the wind last month, and is invading the road easement a bit. Better than waiting for the county road crew to hit it, run over it and drag it up the road next Spring when they mow again!

It was also a slow day out in the train shed yesterday. I did a little painting of details, some already destined for the layout, some just to finish up. I tried to better organize one of the shelves under the layout so I might not lose track of what's there.:( Ran some trains, primarily on the lower level. Cleared some cobwebs here and there. These tiny spiders are definitely HO scale.

Troy - It seems like the gaming companies were really smacking customers with the tariff costs. ScaleTrains had written in their newsletter that they were going to absorb some of that cost and would not pass it on. I thought that $5 on a $200+ loco was pretty reasonable. I can't compare to other manufacturers because I haven't bought anything else.

That's about it this morning. Everyone have a safe and productive Saturday.

I was in geometry class. The teacher was called to the office. When he returned, there was no color to his face.
He said "the President has been shot".

If you aren't in too much of a rush, some aircraft photos would be great. I don't know anything about photo etiquette in Japan, so if not, no big deal.

Willie - I should have mentioned just as a point of interest/trivia to you that the P&W fleet of GP39-2's are all former SF engines.

Here's the locomotive fleet info

that portaland and western logo looks awfully like the Indiana and ohio OR the chicago fort Wayne and eastern lol

and yes I am aware its all under the genesee and whyoming umbrella

Japan is well known for people taking photos. A Nena song from the 80s has the line in it -- "Die Japaner fotographieren ...(und die ganze Welt singt mit, das alte Lied)"

If I remember I'll try and snap some photos. We are taking the domestic LCC in Japan called Skymark. They're just 737 but a livery you don't see outside of Japan.

All the tubs are loaded, stuff priced and staged by the garage door for loading. 8 am we will be loading the truck for a 15 minute trip to the local AG center for the train show. Easily enough stuff to cover 2 8 ft tables. I hope to bring very little back!
Wifey is going with me, she has made several railroad themed clocks and other trinket to sell, should be fun!

Well, howdy there internet kraken and rail-heads

It's Troy again...

Told the wife I wanted to have chicken with the pope, so we went to PopeYes chicken.

Got to sit two booths away from from a couple of small town white-boy dealers...We learned you can crush and snort percoset... and getting caught with drugs in a small town in Indiana is worse than getting caught in a larger city. More jail time... Wife found their discussion entertaining. And LOUD.

Not sure what the father of the 5-6 year old boy that was also in the restaurant was thinking... but they left quickly.

I've been playing with the idea of either getting a cd player for the home stereo... or investing in an apple music subscription. So I started watching youtube vids on the app and how to use it... one was a comparison of the four majors (Spotify, Apple, Youtube, and Amazon Music)...

Slapped the forehead! Dummy! I have a premium subscription to YouTube because I hate ads in my movie clips, meditation videos, etc. That includes the YouTube music app and service

So I'm diving into what the YouTube music app can do. It's a seperate app for the phone/tablet. Right now, I have Pink Floyd's Meddle streaming through my hearing aids thanks to the app on my phone.

Looks like I've got a lot of music available with that app. Now I just have to figure out what CDs I used to have, and re-find them in the app.

I finally made it to the main bedroom. Much more room for me to get through the winter months. More room for my model trains, guitar, plano, and computers. I made the work bench and shelves out of the old king size bed that I have no need for now. Swal
