I failed to mention the passing of one of my heroes,
Frank Oliver Howard (August 8, 1936 – October 30, 2023), nicknamed "Hondo", "the Washington Monument" and "the Capital Punisher"
I became a fan of Frank Howard when he played for the Washington Senators. Being from Baltimore we could listen to the Senators games on the radio. When the Orioles weren't playing of course. Frank Howard was one the Original Texas Rangers in 1972 when the Senators moved to Arlington Texas. Frank Howard's Lifetime Statistics at Baseball Reference.

Speaking of the Texas Rangers, I failed to congratulate them and their fans! Congratulations to the Rangers and all thier fans!

The Rangers won their first World Series by defeating the Arizona Diamondbacks four games to one. Along the way the Rangers won eleven road games in the playoffs! Since Mel Allen is not here I will say it "How about that!?"

Check out the website for some neat video (from 1961 no less) of the #7 in action.

In the mid 1950s I would sometimes go to work with my Dad on Saturdays. He worked in downtown Dallas and it was a special day to see #7 working and going over the triple overpass as he drove to work. I was around 8 years old then and Dad would always drive as slow as possible so I could get a good look. I had Lionel trains back then and my Dad shared his love for trains as he enjoyed the trains big and small, as much as I did.
I was very fortunate to find an individual selling off his HO train collection in February of this year. After talking a bit he mentioned he had a builder modify a brass SP 0-6-0 switcher to match the #7 used at the Union Terminal in Dallas. He asked me if I had any interest in such a loco. After he heard my childhood stories and love for the #7, he said he would sell it to me as he wanted it to go to someone who had a love for this loco. He had well over $800 invested in this project and that did not include the original price of the brass loco. The loco has DCC & sound and runs (and looks) great. I got it for way less than his investment just because he was glad to see it go to a good home.
I still have a soft spot for an 0-6-0 loco today and have several for my layout. Before the #7 was moved to Frisco Texas, I would go to the fair grounds in Dallas and take photos of it there and I must have 60 or so photos in my file. The memories of the #7 and the good times with my Dad are very special now.

Have a great day....John

Afternoon All,

Started out with a walk at 62F and cool. After breakfast I did some online research into wooden beam cranes. Based on what I saw I decided to add diagonal bracing at the top inside corners out of scale 12x12's with styrene "steel" plates. I also painted the concrete footers "concrete". That took a couple of hours. Not sure what's on the agenda for tomorrow.

Alan- Nice looking train and video.

Smudge- Thanks for sharing the video.

Louis- Very nice-looking train. Is it modeled after anything specific?

Willie- I was an avid Hardy Boy book reader as a kid.

Terry- Enjoy your new locomotive.

Joe- I actually have the older single shot and the current 2 part one. No issues with either. I've heard the RSV shot is hard on the body.

Hughie- Nice one!

John- Great growing up story.

I hope everyone has a good night.

Good evening. Had a bunch of guests today. Kiełbasa over fire, hamburgers on the grill and beautiful weather. Yesterday after work and dinner a little time spent on the railroad:

A pair of E44s on a mixed freight.

Few of classic freight cars on my railroad:

Found this "Fishbelly" hopper on a train show:

These old production cars might not have the super detailing of todays stuff, but many can be found pre-weathered and for a low price. Their rugged looks also remind of real railroading back in the day.

Good morning. It's clear and 52.
The speed matching went well yesterday, I now have a pair of Dash-9 40c's and a C40-8. The three of them together have enough power to stringline a longer train around the curves on my layout. No need to ask how I know this. The size of the layout means in general, that won't be an issue, because it looks like the train is chasing its tail.

Well, howdy there wide awake early risers in the USA, and the rest of the world.

Hope you all are ready to convince your pet friends that meal times are an hour later.

I only have three clocks to change as of now. Wife's bedside, car, and wife's sewing room. Two of those require turning on lights and disturbing wife. I value my life, so those can wait.

Finally getting typo-lists back from the typo team on the latest book. Got a new copy of the book uploaded for the next batch of typo hunters.

Discovered I made two mistakes on the Amazon page for my book. Fixed one (I dropped "The Case of..." from the title) only to discover I had set the price incorrectly. Amazon is a dollar more expensive than the price on the other stores. I'll fix that once they unlock the book page from the first change.

Evidently, I need another nap.

I'm hoping that once the gaming convention next weekend is over, I can take a break from all the gaming stuff, and get back to laying out my model railroad. I'm at the point where I need to translate my graph paper doodles to the layout table and see if expectations are realistic.

But, the layout is covered with gaming detritus right now. That will take a weekend just to clean that up.

Good morning all. A day of sunshine and showers.

The other day I got bad news that the railway carriages I pre-ordered will be delayed until May.
Yesterday Dawn said some money had been taken out of our account from 'Rails of Sheffield'.
At the beginning of March 23 I pre-ordered some 'Gunpowder Vans' not due delivery until Jan 24.
They are in stock now and I should receive them soon. 😄

A few household jobs to do before seeing the train room.

Back later.

Surprising there was no BNSF in this run.
They still have BNSF's in stock. I think if they sold out they would've done the heritage 3 which will sell better. There are more modern modelers out there than these manufactures think. Go to some of these websites and the hobby shops have lots of the 40' tank and box cars in stock.
The CSX sold out and I was waiting for a run with the steerable trucks.

My little furry friend must have sensed, or understood our conversation about this ridiculous time change yesterday. She's been out all night, i'm assuming gathering her own food.

It appears to me that manufacturers sometimes (if not most) do not listen to customer wants, by saying 'No call for certain items'.
Here in the U.K. a large number of people have asked for pre-1923 items for a long time.
Eventually a run on pre-1923 generic carriages have been made and 'disappeared' from shop stores in days.

One thing manufacturers are doing is having small runs on items and selling at inflated prices.

Good Morning All. Cloudy and 60°, should reach 80° for the next four days. Maybe rain on Thursday and then more seasonal temperatures for a while.

I had a boring day yesterday, just puttering around the yard. High winds during last week's thunderstorms scattered a number of tree limbs around the yard, so I spent about 90 minutes picking them up and moving them to the ever-growing brush pile. Most were dead from the summer drought, none were more than 1.25" in diameter. Some might be good for kindling once I trim them up so they fit into the shredder. I also ran the electric push mower over some leaf accumulations and bagged them up for tilling into the garden.

A bright spot out in the train shed later on, when I found the missing handlebars on the floor.
IMG_0874.JPG

Used them as a pattern to form another set out of .017 wire and continued painting and assembling the two bicycles.
IMG_0876.JPG

Still need a little touch-up on the blue one. Now trying to decide which rider gets the red one.
Will it be Frank?
IMG_0877.001.JPG

Or will it be Joe with his pipe hanging out of his mouth?
IMG_0878.001.JPG

Opinions welcome. I have six other bicycles to assemble but not this month. I have misplaced five other riders, so they may all become static bikes. I do have a lady ready for the blue bike, but that's after I do the touch-up.

Mac - Those old freight cars look just fine to me. At least 1/4 of my fleet is Athearn Blue box or similar vintage.

Across the pond, I believe that today is Guy Fawkes Day, or is it Night?

Everyone here have a great day. David and Chris, don't blow anything up tonight.

An example that comes to mind is Tangent. They did a run of 4750 covered hoppers. They did 6 CSX that sold out right away but didn't do more for some reason. The older ones that they did (roads no longer in existence) are still available today.

Willie. Our days of attending bonfire night are over. The old days of eating toffee apples and parkin have long gone. The 'Woke Brigade' put a stop to all that. (Here anyway)
The children (and adults) across the park will be lighting fireworks. We shall see them from our lounge window.

Next week is going to be a challenge. There is talk of stopping laying a wreath at our local War Memorial on Armistice Day? The Council do not want to upset Palestinians? We shall see.

It is really maddening when that happens.

Here two companies made the same model of a coal wagon. Same name. Same colour. Even the same running number? Everything identical. It is as if another company made them for the two companies.
