Slight challenge in the train room

A solemn Memorial Day,

61° and clear going for a high of 86°. Been a busy weekend as we had cemetaries to visit on Friday and Saturday. High wind storm hit Wichita on Saturday night, but we got lucky and only managed below severe winds and about 1/4 of an inch of rain. Spent the day yesterday with grandkids and family.

I'll catch up on the new in a bit.

Good morning, all! We are waiting on the contractor to arrive to start the tub to walk-in shower project. Because of some theft of money and property, he wanted to start today despite the holiday. We had no plans for the day, so it worked out.
I hope the weather is better up in Willie's neck of the woods. Here the humidity is just about off the chart. Expecting feels like temps in excess of 110F.
Wishing everyone a Happy Memorial Day. I hope folks, especially the younger ones understand that it's not just a day off, that intent is to honor and recognize those brave souls that gave their lives so we may be free. Freedom is not free!

STAY SAFE
LATER

Good Memorial Day to All. Clear and 67°. Only going to 94° after 97° yesterday. Thunderstorms in the forecast for the rest of the week.

Second day of no power here, as the power company is devoting most resources a bit east where the 2-RV parks and the truck stop that have been in the national news are located. They did have the tree trimming contractor out on our road a bit north of me where trees were going to be in their way. I should be hearing from the roofing contractor soon regarding whether he can re-roof the train shed soon. I'd like to get that out of the way ASAP. It's safe for now, but prolonged rain could be an issue. The gaping hole has been tarped, ,but there are still seams between the plywood sheathing where minor leaks can occur. If he uses the entire 5 man crew that did my house, it can be done in a half day at the most.
Mostly yesterday was spent organizing stuff. Getting the generator and dry ice for the beer fridge was easy. I am gathering debris into piles, but until I retrieve the trash dumpster from the middle of the front yard and put it back, I can't do much with the stuff yet. The neighbor who shares it with me is supposed to be by with his tractor today to move it; yesterday he was busy just organizing his own stuff. He's the one who's barn section and roof disappeared as shown in yesterday's picture post. His home only suffered minor damage from porch furniture being blown away and damaging the porch railing. He does have a lot of downed trees, some on top of one of his 2 carports. His son who works on small engines had his whole shop demolished, as well as one end of his trailer. He and his kids and grandkids spent time gathering his tools out of the pasture.
While it is not official yet, it is being reported that this tornado was between an EF-2 and an EF-3, depending on exactly where you are located.

I haven't gotten to my barn yet, as it is blocked by downed trees from all sides except the back. I no longer actively use it and there is nothing of value there so access now isn't too important. It did lose part of it's roof and walls.

I once again want to thank everyone for the well wishes and confirm that we're shaken but well and thankful that our house survived intact. Others in our area were not so fortunate and need to be remembered in your prayers.

No train shed time yesterday since I don't have lights (and music) out there. We'll go from here. Absolutely no damage out there other than the missing metal roof thankfully.

Chet - Good to see you back with the archival photos. Some of those structures look familiar! ;)
Hughie - They are now confirming 7 causalities east of me, could have been a lot more but the travel center and the marina opened up their coolers to shelter people.
Curt - Unfortunately the train shed is not insured.
Guy - Yes, the Longhorns survived unscathed. Their pasture is slightly south of the major damage zone, but they will still have to walk around a fallen tree or two.

OK, let's all remember what Memorial Day is really about. Hughie expressed it as well as I could in his earlier post.
Everyone have a good day.

Morning folks

My thanks to all present and former service members and all those that paid the ultimate price! Sad that the vast majority of the present USA population apparently has no concept of what that is about. It's just another day off.

42F and all sunshine. The weather yesterday was windy but nice enough that I finally got the hydraulic hoses replaced on the Bobcat grapple head and actually removed the brush debris off the lawn and relocated it to the slash pile.

I'm uncertain how today is going to "fall" out. Some friends may be bringing pizza for lunch.

Good morning Crew from the very windy State of Wisconsin.

Willie even though the tornado affected your area and your property I know that feeling that it’s only property and can be fixed or replaced. You can’t do that with a life. Glad you and the wife are ok and you have enough power to save the freezer. Maybe a new grill arriving in the near future?

I’ve only been up since 6:45 and for some reason I went out to get a custard filled long John! It was great… gee that would not have happened if Terry was home.

The group from Vegas, the wife, my golf partner’s wife, the daughter and grandkids will be home sometime tonight. The son was in Boise yesterday and will pick them up in Vegas and he texted maybe around 6 tonight they will arrive in Middleton. He can stay until Wednesday afternoon and heads off just to Milwaukee for his next trip out. The SIL will pick all of them up tonight.

I have some touch up weathering to do on a few cars today or maybe tomorrow as the spirit doesn’t seem to be here yet today to do anything! Maybe a nap

Be well, hug someone

Good morning all. Long holiday weekend, so much variety. Worked around the house on saturday finishing dressing up around the sidewalk and putting concrete plates from the old sidewalk near the mailbox. Yesterday breakfast, backpack and hiking shoes in the trunk and off i went headed eventually on I81 towards Roanoke, Va. In Lexington i turned onto I64 and headed to Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad country. First stop was Clifton Forge, the skewed steel structures are on the C&O mainline just before eastern yard limit:

I was hoping to catch something on this beautiful bridge, but do to holiday weekend, traffic was scant.

Next the yard and rail skansen:

C&O SD40 (thanks @bnsf971 for the correction):

The star of the place is of course the "Northern", C&O referred to them as "Greenbriar" (once again thanks to @bnsf971 for the correction):

It was only second time for me in Clifton Forge, and the first time i only stopped at the westbound part of the yard.

Unfortunately the close by fence next to the 4-8-4 prevented good roster shots. There was a lot of interesting equipment and it would take several posts to show it all, so i'll just give a few tor a taste:

Very interesting was that box car converted into a WW II troop car:

I think this was the first time i saw one. After that i drove into West Virginia and was able to catch Amtrak westbound coming out of the tunnel in White Sulphur Springs, the name of the tunnel is appropriate:

It was a long day trip and i didn't get back home untill 1AM today, but it was worth it😀

The C&O 4-8-4s were called Greenbriars.
And the SD40 was, in fact, an original C&O engine:
Great article Terry, thank you!

Thanks for straightening that up. I was thinking the Greenbriar sounded familiar. That SD40 with the long rear deck had me confused with an SD40-2. I'll edit that post so no modeler will get confused.

Some really great news from me! There are 4-power company trucks, all with cherry-pickers working between me and the neighbors house along the main road. That might mean A/C and hot water by this evening. They are all contracted from out of town, via the mutual assistance program. Local power company representative is optimistic about this evening, but noted that the downed lines behind my neighbor's barn will require climbing the poles.

This just in, some of the drone shots that my grandson made yesterday.

OK, I've beat this dead horse enough now. No more destruction pictures.
