Well, howdy there internet people, and race fans...

Working as a small-town newspaper photographer back in the 80s, right north of Indianapolis, meant I had to go cover the 500 race.

"Why?" I asked, pointing at the big blue machine that spat out about 10 photos an hour from the "wire"... that was fast back then... "We've got the UPI Wire, and they have about 50 photogs there..."

"Local flavor," the editor said. "Do you best to get local people... out of 200,000 attendees, you should be able to find one or two local people...

I'd been in the county for a grand total of 6 months by then...

So, I listed to the sports editor, who had gone many times. He said to work the 1st turn corner, hit the press room for snacks, and try to get near the pits for driver shots. But warned that pit row and finish line would be off-limits to all but the gold pass press credentials (or whatever they were)...

that was the year that someone's wheel came off on the final lap, hit another car, and soared up into the stands, killing someone near the top of turn 4 bleachers...

Did I get that? Nope... I was trying to get close to the finish line from turn one... but so were a ton of other photographers....
Did I find anyone local, other than me and the sports editor? Nope, and we didn't count according to the main editor

Did they run any of my photos?

Nope.... they used stuff from the wire. They didn't need boring photos when all that excitement happened.

At my next paper in Northern Indiana, they tried to get me down to the race... I said nope. You'll just use something from the wire anyway, why pay my mileage and food/hotel budget.

The editor actually accepted that.
And I spent that race day sitting peacefully at home ignoring the greatest spectacle in racing. It was someone else's weekend to head out and get photos of "race parties" happening in our local communities. I think I even took a nap.

Jaz,my wife made a sugar free golden cake with sugar free chocolate icing, my favorite cake. It was the first one I ever had that was sugar free. I liked it very much, but I only had a very small piece. My son loved it! She also made a blueberry pie and brownies, not sugar free, I stayed clear of them, but I did enjoy looking at them.
…and sniffing the air…bliss

JAZ- My wife said that she normally uses 4 cans of peas, dice up 3 hard boiled eggs and mix in mayonaise to taste. We like to mince up 1/2 medium onion for the salad, but some people do not like onions. My daughter adds 3 tables spoons sweet pickle relish to her recipe.
Fresh or frozen peas changes the taste completely.
Mmm yummy I have chickens so eggs, am growing peas, and spring onions,I have an avocado Keto oil mayo not gmo rapeseed or other bad for me oils, so I think this looks a goer, thank you and your wife :D may yet try a pickle too so thanks to daughter also :D

Whew! I am glad to be home and catching up on the forum. We drove up to the lake house last night with 9 of us spending the night to host my middle grandson's high school graduation party for family and friends today. Based on his ACT scores, he will attend the same school as his mother and aunt did on a scholarship.
My SIL brought his gas grill and set it beside mine on the back porch to grill the meat. We started smoking up the neighborhood about 11 AM and cooked 96 hamburgers, 48 corndogs, 4 pounds of smoked sausage and 8 pounds of chicken until 1:30 PM. We had about 3 gallons of potato salad, 1.5 gallons of macaroni salad, 1 gallon of English pea salad, 2 gallons of baked beans, and a gallon of sausage/cheese dip with potato chips. Lots of cheese, tomatoes and lettuce to put on the burgers. The 38 people present also feasted on a large double layer sheet cake, five gallons of ice cream and about 7 different toppings and sauces.
When we old fuddy duddies left about 5 PM, there were still10 people enjoying the lake water.
I hope to make it to 8 PM before I fall asleep!
My oh me: that sounds like enough for 138 people!!!!! guessing lots of leftovers went to various homes

Afternoon All,

The visit with my buddies went very well with no issues. Today I got the village vehicles weathered and placed. Tomorrow, I plan on doing a dirty water pour under the bridge area to the right of the village. I figure if I screw it up, I can put ground cover over it. I don't have a great history doing water.

Mikey- Sounds like a great family time.

Ken D&J- Have a great day.

John- Welcome. I have a friend locally that had a train store (All Aboard South) but closed years ago because he couldn't compete with the internet.

Willie- Great scenes.

Louis- Hope you feel better soon.

What a morning. Checked online at HomeDepot for 1x4x8’ treated lumber to repair a raised bed.

Figured I would put the corner back together and replace the leg. Placed my order, waited for the email to say come get it. Got the email. Terry and I go to the Farmers Market and I got the daughter 4 bottles of Hard Cider with 6.5% alcohol content. $15.75. A few other non essentials IMO and head to HD. Breakfast tacos $6.00 each, not worth it at the food truck. Near the son in Hornsby Bend outside of Austin we can get 3 the same size for $6.00, and I will after 6/10.

They can’t find my order, but I had my email and now he says then you picked it up already! No I did not. Had to go to the on-duty Store Manager because I was not being treated as a customer, more like a thief. She started down the same path. Says you paid by HD credit so it was you. Terry says that card is in your file. Manager says so you are saying an employee stole this. I almost said yes, but Miss Manners say we are not blaming anyone yet. I give up, say fine I will go to Menards and I will dispute the HD $16.00 credit card bill when we get it. Boom got the credit for the lumber and she calls someone in lumber to bring the pieces up front. He tells her we haven’t hadn’t any 1x4x8’ brown treated since last Tuesday. I bring it up online, even with the store rack number. He says nope that is 1x3x6’ green treated. Manager is now apologizing left and right for everything that’s gone wrong. Terry says fine, we will find something else to use. The closest Lowes is 60 miles and Menards is 12 or I would have left. We took home a couple strap corner brackets Terry found and I found 2- 1x3x6’ brown treated. Nice looking stuff but the lumber aisles and racks were pretty empty. Guy helping me said there are truck loads of lumber to be unloaded but the 2 guys on night shift were off Friday and last night. They have no other qualified equipment operators to unload the lumber. Bigger machines then the forklifts they have driving around.

Get home, unload everything from the car. Take wheel barrow to the disabled raised bed. Start to shovel the planting soil out into the wheel barrow, now I hear thunder but see no lightning. 3/4 unloaded, hail is pelting me but no rain. Into the house I go and now it’s raining coming down in sheets for maybe 5 minutes. Drizzle then nothing. Very humid now. SIL helped me carry the 3/4 empty bed into the garage and when they return later tonight will help me return it to the area Terry wants. I think instead of the daughter getting those hard ciders I should have tried one or 2.

Good Afternoon, from a place that can't decide if it wants summer to be here, or just forget about the extra effort and keep it cold.
51F at 1:00pm.

Louis - Another belated Happy Birthday. I don't know why adults celebrate birthdays. What's so darn happy about getting older?!!

I'm going to change-out the kitchen sink taps today. Sick and tired of trying to find a replacement ceramic cartridge for the old Peerless tap. They don't even list it on the Peerless website, and the place I bought the tap dosen't support what they sell. What happened to the good ol' days when it was just an O-ring.

This morning, I was busy bringing my layout track to the area that it will need to cross a bridge. So, I'll need to get busy modelling a bridge, a canyon, and putting in some water. - Still don't have it set in my head how I want it to look, so I suppose I'll build the bridge first. Then worry about what it's going to cross over.

I think I'm doing ok with the track laying. One small error today, in that I have a slight space where a curved switch meets the mainline. Don't believe it will be much of a problem; it just bugs me. Here's a photo:

And here's some pics of the layout as it sit's today.
I removed one switch from the yard out front, to give me more room for a coal trestle. Coal trestles need room for trucks to maneuver. There's a 36" length of track just sitting on a riser diagram, where the trestle will be built.
I'd get to laying track on the other side, but I'm still not quite sure what I want to do. So, that's in 'thinking it out' mode.
The blue markers over in the corner are where a shell heating oil distributor will be. The markers are for tanks, loading dock, and office building.
Here's photos:

This part is about 12' across. It's getting harder to get everything into the photo.

Better go do that sink. Have a good one!

My neighbor stopped by to check on me. I managed to hobble out to the front porch and sit with him.
In the course of our conversation he revealed to me he was worried I would sue him. I told I could never do any such thing. It was simply dogs being dogs, stuff happens. Old man falls down, nothing diabolical.

Good afternoon, all! Another warm morning turned hot afternoon. No rain forecasted for the next ten days.
Old man falls down, nothing diabolical.
Whew, thought it was just me. Happy birthday by the way.

John - welcome

You know, we have some pretty good story tellers here in the diner. It certainly makes visiting enjoyable.

A little progress was made on the fire house. I still loathe the stairs which are half done. I also learned in these kits it would be a lot better to install the windows before assembling the walls or at least before clueing in the floor.

STAY SAFE
LATER

Good evening. Today was a very pleasant day, with a high of 82° Currently, it is 66° on my front porch, and 59° at the Rutgers University weather station at the Manasquan Reservoir. Tomorrow it's going to 88°.

I spent a good part of the day down in the train room. Testing engines and changing out rolling stock. I also worked on the long dormant WITCO Chemical Co. (Atlas Middlesex Manufacturing Co - aka Helm Tobacco). Finished the 8 brick chimneys, and added several ventilators. I have a few more details to finish. Tomorrow is another day.

Louis: Hope you feel better soon.

Curt: The miners patch looks great. Well done.

Hughie: The fire house is coming along nicely.
