Well, howdy there internet peeps, It's troy again.
Since Sweetie told me about her "Canadian" ancestor I've been spending my day trying to track down leads to find the great-great-great grandmother in annals of Quebec lore. I finally gave up, and started tracing her through her children, and there isn't much. Two census documents peg her as born in either "Canada" or "Canada: French" by way of tracking the head of household's parent's country of origin... there is one on Sweetie's great great grandfather (son of the woman in question) that says the G3 Gramma is from OHIO!... I suspect the daughter or wife answered the census taker's questions and didn't have the correct answers. This was late 1800s and early 1900s.
Tomorrow, I'll take some of the census records for the other children they had. But G3 Gramma died young with 5 or 6 children, the G3Grandpa remarried, so I have to be careful to get the correct child+mom combo.
In other news, Sweetie has an old family tale about two brothers of G2 Granpa who went to fight in the civil war. One on Union, on in the confederate army. Problem #1 there are about 300 entries in Confederate rolls for someone of his name. And they don't do much tracking of where the person was born, or parents. So which one is it? If it is at all? To be fair, the ancestry sites list him as a big unknown with no death date. MIA? KIA? who knows... or did he even fight at all.
His brother probably did for the Union. Unsupported claims say he
mustered out in 1862 with Co. E, 125th Regt., Illinois Vol. Inf. and in 1864 was wounded and sent to the Invalid Corps.
It's included as stories on the sites, but no supporting documents. When I have time, I'll try to look it up.
Another interesting story was that the Confederate brother supposedly deserted before he disapeared. HOWEVER... Union Brother with the name Alex has the same first name as the G3 grandpa. AND another person with the same name as G3 and son, born about the same time as G3 Grandpa, did indeed join the peactime Union army - in 1833ish. And is listed as deserting three months later.
G3 Grandpa was supposedly born in New York.
Deserter with same name was born in Ireland according to the regiment's roster.
I can see where the stories get mixed together - because that Union Army Roster from 1833 is tagged to G3 grandpa who wasn't born in Ireland.
In other news, I got mail today - Or, rather, UPS boxes.
My book from the game company arrived. The title is "Fracture"... it arrived in one piece... not fractured, but very bent.
Fortunately, the other box didn't go through the same hellhole. It's contents were fine, eh?
Had to celebrate my Canadian Heritage with an additional purchase!
