Temp was 75F at 7:00 am and 79 at 8:00 am when I started mowing grass.
About two weeks ago, I lost the pully tensioning spring on the mower deck of the lawn tractor.
A new spring arrived at the mower shop Friday and took 15 minutes to install. ( Plus 6 minutes for me to get up off the ground. )
Being almost 80 and a lazy fat man, I waited for cooler Sat. morn to mow the grass. Got 3/4 done and ran out of gas. Getting hotter, but I drug out the self-propelled trim mower. It ran out of gas after 10 minutes and I was useless by then.
Got gas after church on Sunday at noon, but the heat index was over 100.
I gassed up the trim mower this morning as there is only about 1000 square feet to finish mowing. Mower started on the second pull and did well in the high, wet grass for about a minute. After about 10 pulls on the starter rope, I was muttering about the mower's parentage.
THEN, I realized the gas line was turned off. Turned the gas line on and apologized to the mower when it started on the second pull again.
The grass around the back stairs was last cut about 6 weeks ago, so it was about 10 inches high, thick and wet from overnight dew. The mower kept choking on the heavy grass and took 15 minutes to cut with the trim mower. Soaked in sweat, I staggered back to the basement garage and put the mower up. As I passed thru the train room, I decided to sit down and organize some of the items on my work desk for the next 30 minutes. I finally made it upstairs for a glass of ice water.
Gentlemen and ladies, my advise to you is don't get old; don't get fat and don't try to work in 100 degree heat.
And stay hydrated!
