I did some other stuff this weekend besides take pictures of my truck collection. 🙂 I had to do some repair work for a friend.
The dark side of the second hand brass experience is having to fix issues, mistakes, and sometimes butchery done by a previous owner. These photos show a Westside GS-6 that belongs to a young friend of mine whose life I’m ruining by giving him the brass bug. He bought it from a popular dealer who will go unnamed, as none of this is their fault. No issues were visible until you got inside the thing, and it ran well enough, so they would have had no reason to do anything to it.
He wanted sound. The previous owner had re-motored, so half the usual work was done. Not very well, but he was on a budget, so the plan was to do a “good enough” job that was cost friendly. I installed a Lok Sound decoder and a sugar cube speaker. The Westside GS-4 through 6 have a ton of room inside the boiler and cab, so this was a clean install with no connectors between the loco and tender. The big problem was the motor. Someone didn’t understand the concept of clearance. It took a considerable amount of fiddling to get it inside the firebox. Sort of an interference fit. That all went OK. A few weeks later the rubber coupling between the motor and gearbox failed. Since I’m training him I told him to remove the chassis, and that’s where he got in trouble. The interference fit of the motor caused enough flexing to cause failure of the solder joints holding the rear chassis mount, and one of the booster engine steam pipes. The fix was to replace the motor with one that would fit without any problems, and do the repairs. It took resistance gear, and without the factory jigs, getting that rear mount back in plumb was an interesting experience. There was no way to clamp it in place so I ended up screwing it to the chassis, dropping the chassis into place and mounting the front truck. That gave me proper positioning and a way to hold it in place without slow roasting my fingers. The steam pipe was also a bit of a challenge because there wasn’t much room to work with the soldering tweezers.
The other problem was Walthers Goo. For some years now I’ve thought you should need a permit for buying Goo. It’s probably the most misused material that ever found its way into the hobby, and has NO place anywhere in a brass model. Some idiot had Gooed the motor in place, and there was so much Goo in the boiler for no apparent reason that it boggled the mind. The mission seemed to be to use up an entire tube of the stuff. If this were my model, I’d have soaked it in lacquer thinner which I’ve found is the only way to remove cured Goo, then done a complete re-paint, but, its not mine and he’s on a budget. The photos speak for themselves. Yuck! But it will run properly and make noise. I hate shoddy workmanship!
🤬
Next up I have to do some file work to clean up excess solder, touch up the paint, and close her up.

Good Evening All. Still at 60° as the sun sets under clear skies. High today was 63° but felt much warmer with full sunlight and no wind. Should be in the 70's for the next few days. My kind of February.

I wish once again to thank everyone for the well wishes for this bout of pneumonia. I do seem to be over the worst part as breathing is no longer a struggle.

Thanks also to all from my wife on the Happy Birthday wishes. She seems to be a keeper at 49.5 years and counting.

I have had the opportunity to read a few of the posts made since yesterday morning. It seems that vehicles have moved to the forefront after all of those days of taxes. I bought several yesterday on my trip to the LHS, eight of them being Oxford. Guy, I don't know about prices up north, but here I get them for less than $10 US@, which is really reasonable.

Shows how many vehicles a layout can swallow!
Since I am anal about statistics, I note that I have 492 vehicles on the layout currently. But that's not nearly enough in my view. And I haven't yet replaced some of my original Tyco plastic ones, I just keep them in the far background.
In the locale that I model, it is not uncommon to have 30 year old vehicles on the road, mainly since they don't salt the roads in winter. That's why it's OK that most of these pictured here are from the 50's.

Willie, I am not sure if I am a early poster or late. For a few weeks I was posting around 1am, glad that trend is over!
I was more referring to our European friends and Louis who has strange hours.

Willie- I am fortunate to have a wife that doesn't object to my train madness.
While mine doesn't object either, she just doesn't want to see the investment. Silly her!
I had not seen a Corvair model before.
There's a Corvair in the picture above on the bottom left, the red one.

Here's another that I already have.

Oooh ooooh car pissing contest :D (just joking)
That's because they're all driving on the wrong side of the damn road!o_O
Gary - I have been attempting soldering for over 30 years without any real success.
Lee - I never realized that there were so many great looking O scale vehicles available.

Well, I have caught up with yesterday's posts. I need to go out on the porch and pee and then check the wife. She's watching football and hasn't screamed or cursed for over 15 minutes so I hope that she's still well! Or maybe it's halftime and she's in the shower.

I'll catch up tomorrow and I have more pictures of the LHS booty.

Even on Oxford's site they are pretty reasonable and at shows I usually get them for $9.00 or so.

I too am lucky. My wife doesn't care what I spend, though at above a certain threshold I do discuss it, at least to I don't mess up the cash flow for any given week.

Gary - I have been attempting soldering for over 30 years without any real success.
A couple of rules for successful soldering:

1: The pieces to be joined must be clean. I usually use sandpaper to rough them and remove any oxidation. The metal should be bright, no patina.

2: Always use flux. Not the kind in the core of the solder either. I use the thin wire type solder and a separate paste flux.

3. The right amount of heat is critical. If it seems like it's taking forever you don't have enough heat, A more powerful iron is indicated. I use a 15 watt iron for electronics, and a 45 watt iron for most everything else. One of the variable wattage soldering stations from Weller or Micro-Mark will cover most any job we would run into. I don't use the guns. They are too heavy and difficult to control for small jobs.

4: Resistance gear is a whole 'nother ball game. It's like having a hobby sized arc welder. For what I see of what you do, you don't need it, but it is one of those tools that, when you need it, nothing else will work.

Good Morning!
31F this morning with the moon just setting in the west. It will be a clear, sunny day, though, there will be wind.

I'm enjoying the vehicle collection photos that are being posted. This is great!
I'm enjoying it so much, that I set up and took a quick photo of my small collection:
View attachment 140861
I expect to increase that humble collection by 4x vehicles within a couple of weeks. Plus, I have a few Sylvan tractor/trailer kits to build, that will put a few trucks in the mix. I'm trying to keep it all within reach of 1965.

Can't be in here too long; I'll be working on the wife's plant grow station project, instead of wasting time on the super-bowl. I'll have to tear apart some of the basement ceiling, so I can get some electric wiring directed up to the main floor level. Today is a good day to fish in some wires. - I need to get this out of the way, so I can get back to hobby work.

Again, wonderful photos folks! I hope this keeps up over time.

Time to go. Have a great day!!
You have a nice start!
I like to buy hard to find vehicles from estate sales and classic models. I am a sucker for more modern vehicles that are exotic models.
I can enjoy the cars even if they do not see my layout.

Morning all,

Thanks for the birthday well wishes. It was just a bad day for it not being a day off of work.

I'm better enough to be at the office, which in itself appears to have almost fallen apart as they kept calling me while I was home not feeling good and groggy from the combination of muscle relaxer and Oxycodone. I still have some of the scripts left but took the last pain pill Saturday morning and the last muscle relaxer Saturday night. I will finish the z-pack. Upsets the Mrs. that I never take all of a prescription. Even when in the hospital for my knee replacements, I never hit the morphine trigger enough in the estimation of my Dr. I just don't like the out of control, numb feeling. I guess I'm addicted to pain. 🤣

The kids did come over last night and brought dinner. I was nice to have almost everyone there. The other 2 granddaughter's called and talked with me a for a bit. That's always a good time, especially with the 2 year old.

Back to the axe and grind and I'll be back later.

Good morning all! 14 degrees heading for sunny and 37. Day off today and lots to do. Been a really busy few days and I'm glad to have a day off. Nothing exciting going on around here to speak of. Just the usual work, eat, sleep, repeat. Sorry I missed your birthday Patrick. Hope it was a happy one!
Hope you all have a great day!

Good morning all,

-5 and sunny, heading for the teens I think

I went awol this weekend while experimenting with aluminum screen and hydrocal. It was both easier and harder than expected. I posted some pics on my build thread. I will work to keep up today

Here is a photo somewhat remiscent of spring:

a final view 019.JPG

The light globe is loose again, I see. I never could get that thing to stay on (above)

This is the old layout, still have the little houses, will be donating the Church since not enough room on the new layout for this large building

More later, Dave LASM

Stickers at gas pumps. I know in Wisconsin by law if there is a hold on a payment it must be explained at the point of service. That means every pump has the information but I have never seen a hold of more then $75.00.

The amount changes depending on the price of gas :) Most of the stations around here had a $100 limit but seem to have moved it up to $150 (again -- was at $150 back in 2013 or whenever gas was up hight). We have a lot of trucks in Utah and $75 / $100 is easy to hit when filling up the big pickups. One side effect of these holds is that they don't let you pump more than you held so if filling a big truck you have to swipe again when the pump shuts down and you're not full. That would happen to me back around 2012-2013 and high gas prices and I had a truck (no longer have one).

Good Morning,

Tough night. First, wife grabbed the handle of the skillet after it had come out of a 425F oven. Yes, I can say, "Second degree burns." Only one whisky partially consumed by then, so not alky-related. But you can be sure there was a second and third poured.

Then eating dinner before a Brit movie, "Peter's Friends," which has a stellar cast but just proves that actors alone cannot make a movie, the younger greyhound came down limping. Not sure what happened, but the driver on the right rear truck was not good. Greys have an interesting characteristic: they 'scream.' So poor puppy, four or five times during hte night, he moved and it hurt and he screamed - - - not much of a good sleep for us. Finally, at 0400, I got up and slept in the living room on the couch with him near me. That kept him quiet until 0645 when he got up ... and screamed. Wife did not get much sleep at all, as she is the one who can hear.

Off to workout session soon - - will taper it back some as legs still quite sore. Hamstrings - - they must be good for something? Then some shopping and some work. Hopefully table work this evening as no meetings!!

Best of the day to you, Steve J

Good Morning!
I'm still working on the wife's plant grow station project, so there's been no time to play with anything train related. There's a couple more days of work there, not including paint. That means I won't have any new photo's to share until I can get back to train related matters.
Guy, I don't know about prices up north, but here I get them for less than $10 US@, which is really reasonable.
Willie - That reasonable price can be doubled up here, and quadrupled if I want to MO out of the states. If I can get into the city, I might be able to pick up something useful for around $20.00cdn. If I MO out of Australia, I can pick them up for around $12.00cdn shipped. If I were dumb enough to use Ebay, I'm looking at $40-50.00/unit before it gets to my door. Anyway, the high cost of 1/87 vehicles is the reason I have such a small collection. That, and it's hard to find early 1960's vehicles in the first place.

Since I have no photos to share, I suppose I'd better get to it, and get the wife's project out of the way!
Have a good one!

Good Morning All. Looks like clear skies and 39° out there this morning. Warm and windy for the next three days, temps up into the 70's. Maybe rain Wednesday night going into Thursday morning. Need rain badly, only 0.4" since New Years Day.
Happy Valentines Day.
Still trying to catch up with all of the posts made while I was out of pocket.

I met my third grandson at my wife's birthday party Saturday.
20220212_211906.jpg

He's two months old and is doing well. He lives in San Antonio and due to surgeries, Mom being sick, etc, this is the first time we have had an opportunity to see him in person. Like all kids his age, he just eats, sleeps and poops...didn't hear him cry in the two days we were together.

Thanks for all of the likes and comments over the past two days. Too many to acknowledge all of them individually.

About all that I did out in the train shed yesterday, was to unpack the "booty box" from my visit to the LHS Saturday.
IMG_0382.JPG

IMG_0383 (2).JPG

Because I dislike making trees, I did purchase a package of 2"-3" pre-made ones to see how they actually look on the layout.
IMG_0390.JPG

I also purchased some Woodland Scenics barbed wire fencing that I have been wanting to try out.
IMG_0385.JPG

I have always made my own out of toothpicks and some fine wire, but it is labor intensive to drill 3- .010" holes in those scale 4.5' toothpicks. I am going to see how this stuff works out, I got two packages which scales out to 384'.
My 14 yo grandson was with me and I let him pick out some figures that he was interested in. He came up with a couple packs of Walther's pedestrians.
IMG_0391.JPG

He also came up with a set of nude bathers from Preiser, which will go with a set from Noch that my DIL gave me for Christmas two years ago.
IMG_0395_LI (2).jpg

It does seem kind of sexist since they are all females! The set that I have from Noch is mixed.
More to come later, including several small structures.

Joe -
People still use checks?
I still use them to pay bills like utility, insurance and the American Express bill. Anything that I mail in. I do not link any of them with the bank. I'll use the American Express for anything else. There's no interest if paid off every month, which I do; and I get money back once a year based on my purchases. They will also cancel any charge if there is a dispute with a merchant, although I think that I have only had to use that service once. While I have a debit card, I only use it at one merchant who won't use credit cards.
Alan - Excellent collection of trucks. If you have too many, just send them to me! Thanks for your view of soldering. Most likely I need a better soldering tip. I have a Weller gun type, but it has what I think is a spade tip.
Lee - Also to you, quite an excellent truck collection.

Everybody have a great day. Stay safe, warm and dry.

Checks?

I occasionally have to write one but usually ad-hoc. For example, to send a deposit in to the geo-thermal engineer I used a check. I no longer regularly use checks but have ad-hoc needs several times a year. I pay all bills either with credit cards or with direct debit (enter banking info in). I try to avoid the direct debit, except to pay the credit cards, and try to use credit card for everything (utilities etc).

I pay the credit cards every month online. I don't use a debit card for anything except for Apple Cash (send money as I don't use Venmo) or when in Japan or foreign country, to get cash at the ATM. (I rarely use ATMs in the US). Debit cards are dangerous as a normal payment method -- swiping a debit card is very dangerous. Crooks always end up with your card details and when card fraud happens with a debit card, the missing money is YOUR money, and even if the bank makes it good, that can take time where YOUR money is missing, and maybe you can't pay other bills while the fraud is being worked out and your money replaced. When you buy stuff on a card, you are exposing a banks money to fraud. Any fraudulent use is on the BANK'S money. not yours. This is why I never use a debit card to pay anything.

Happy Valentines Day! Good morning.16° with bright sunlight, which will hopefully melt some of the glaze that formed after dark. Yesterday's snow storm was perfect most of the day, sticking on the grass, but not the concrete or paved surfaces. Of course, the snow lingered after dark, resulting in the ice. I will have to treat the portion of the driveway that never sees the sun this time of year.

Read that most of yesterdays commercials were from Sports Book Establishments or Crypto Currency Purveyors...Also read that the commentators were more concerned with the changing odds, than they were with the play by play. I admit that while I didn't watch any of the game. I did check on the score twice, once at mid point and after the game. I also read Ken's (VA) post concerning his opinion of the telecast, especially the side show. The only conclusion I have is that based on that, I would have been disappointed had I watched it.

Interesting factoid, I stumbled on while researching my fleet of pre 1966 PRR locomotives. My new Bowser RS3 has PRR road number 8592. Bowser has announced two road numbers, for their next release, which will be in the 1966 pre-merger scheme with 16" yellow numerals and Keystone Decals. They will be road numbers 5401 and 5411. Just happens that the PRR 8592 as renumbered to the 5411. I did not check the other numbers of the current release, but PRR obtained 16 units of what is generally known as the Third phase.

Willie: Your third grandson is a cutie. Nice haul from the LHS. Concerning checks, I use them when the situation calls for it, mostly, I use the bill pay feature at my bank.
