John - I have some fond memories of Vince Vance and the Valiants in clubs around the Dallas area as well. I vaguely remember them at The Fry Street Fair in Denton one time. I remember the comedy routine from a couple of shows, although I was never involved. Fry Street in Denton was a noted "hippie haven" in the 60's and 70's. Denton's only head shop was located there. They still have the Fry Street Fair to this day, although much commercialized in the last 35 years. Fry Street started at the NE corner of the NTSU (now UNT) campus and ran north for about 3/8 mile. I lived in a rooming house there in 1971 close to the hospital at the north end.

I posted this morning about starting my very own "Ten Days of Christmas", where I intended to put an additional piece of rolling stock on the layout every day for ten days. But I left the camera with yesterday's "gift to me" outside. So here it is from yesterday. An Atlas Master Series Railbox boxcar purchased in 2014. It's been on the storage shelf ever since.
Out of the box, it had a stirrup step that was bent up.

Fortunately Atlas made these parts out of metal, so it was an easy fix to bend it back down properly.
1765857079682.jpeg

Detailing is quite good on this car.
1765857117627.jpeg

One drawback which I posted about this morning is that they used a very short axle length of .925" and my truck tuner didn't fit!
1765857194986.jpeg

It turns out that this normal to me pre-layout tune-up wasn't necessary, car rolled fine; but it was an interesting discovery. Kadee and Intermountain steel wheelsets are between 1.010" and 1.015". My MicroMark truck tuner is ~1.015".
Tomorrow, we'll see what the second day of Christmas has for me.

Good Night.

Yeah, when I was adding lighting to my Rivarossi smoothside UP passenger cars, I found that the axle widths were all over the place with different manufacturers and even different model numbers.

Some sites like Intermountain post their vitals. I remember having taken a lot of time to finally decide on what I needed, which according to my jungle river order history, were the Walthers P2K. I also bought a micromark truck tuner to make everything fit.

Good Morning All!
49F @ 69% windy.

Welp, we got another EAM that they are/were letting water out of the hold back dam bout 1500 yesterday. Was not raining or whatever at that time. When I went to bed, it was poring; hard. Got up at 0P30, stepped outside and could not hear the creek and the rain had stopped. Oh, it was 50F at that time.

Kinda have figured out FreeCad to do what I want just now. There is a ton more to learn. Parametric models/modeling are new to me, hence the busy work. It does tell you what is wrong and where, but it is a brain thing to see the fix. The 3D part ( so far ) is probably the easiest of it all. One widget to go into the Z angle. One widget to cut a channel in the Z angle. Ya, it can get convoluted I suspect. Anyway, progressing...

So my trusty HP RPN calculator bit the dust. Had crud around the keyboard keys which looked like something got spilled in it. Was going to split the case and throw it in the dishwasher but decided it was time for a new calculator. Right, HP's are gold. Anyway, found a Scientific one that looked OkieDokie and realized I wanted 2, one for the Train Cave, one for the House. Near $40 for both. Just as I was about to 'add to cart' there were a bunch of other devices at the bottom of the page of which some came in packs of 6/8/12/+. So for $18, I now have 6 of the dang things. No problem with that as now I can have one in each area of the Train Cave and don't have to go and look for it; do the same with glasses too...

Welp, started my 74th orbit. Currently:

73 years 0 months 0 days
or 876 months 0 days
or 3809 weeks 0 days
or 26,663 days
or 639,912 hours
or 38,394,720 minutes
or 2,303,683,200 seconds

No additional plans for today, other than going for the 'birthday' beer later and don't know what we are gonna eat. No good Steak Places in town anymore and on top of the there still is a 'boil order' for City water. I do better steaks that most places; Maria agrees. We do not want to travel somewhere, get motel and find dinner, so that is out. Decisions..decisions...

Happy birthday Todd

I heard back from the seller of the locomotive, they don’t have a decoder to send for me to install, and we’re negotiating a discount. If we can’t agree on an amount, they’ve agreed to a return.
The second seller still hasn’t responded to several messages, it’s only been 3 days, but still…
I got an email from my new health insurance company with my account info.
I tried using it to get my prescriptions refilled. The cholesterol medicine is being refilled, but they don’t want to refill the blood pressure medicine.

Good Morning All. Mostly clear and 42°. back into the 60's today, peaking in the 70's for a few days coming up. Current forecast has a high of 76° on Christmas Day. No precipitation in the 10 day forecast. Could dip into the 30's Thursday night, but that's the only chill coming up. So it looks like I'll be letting the fire go out in the wood-burning heater today, have an overnighter Thursday and then let it go out until at least after Christmas. Eight windows on the SE face and 4 more on the SW face will allow the solar heater to do it's thing in the house.

A visit to my primary care doc this morning is on the agenda; he always wants to see his patients after any hospital visits. Recovery is coming in spurts, yesterday was not much progress but today already feels much better. It's not the surgery (ablation) itself, but the entry points in the groins that are the concern. Still have two very large ugly bruises but with lessening discomfort; I'm told and have read that this is normal. I just don't like it. The extended walking through the grocery store on Sunday probably contributed to my lack of progress yesterday. I miss getting out and getting a good workout in the garden or with the firewood, although I have been carrying it in in very light loads.

The lack of any real activity is driving me crazy, but I know that I must resist for a few more days, maybe another week or so. After today's doc visit, all medical stuff is on hold until my 2 week follow-up with the NP from the surgeon's office on the 29th. The drive to and from will take longer than the actual visit. He, along with the surgeon and the PCP are in agreement that I should be able to reduce the amount of BP medication that I am taking, which I feel has been causing the feeling of lethargy since my ER visit in June. Prior to that visit, I was taking 3 different BP meds a day, some multiple times. I am now on 7! I did drop the 8th one a month after it was started and another one has had the dosage reduced recently, but I still think it's far too many. However, my cardiologist disagrees, even though my BP is lower than I have seen in 20 years, too low on some days. My goal is to return to the quality of life before the June ER visit.
I do have three holiday fests to deal with; this Saturday is the huge extravaganza for my side of the family at my brother's home. Christmas Day is split between my two daughter's homes, brunch at one and dinner at the other, and an as yet unscheduled get-together with my wife's side of the family. Where to have it is still being discussed. The niece's home that we've been going to burned down last spring, and wife's SIL's house is currently undergoing flood remediation. Everyone else is an out-of-towner. So we'll probably go to a sports bar like we have done a few times in the past.

Out in the train shed yesterday, I did the usual train running and a little more figure painting. I now have 16 figures in the ready cup for dull-coating. I also did the "Second Day of Christmas" thing, unveiling a second new to the layout freight car. Some background here: I haven't bought but a couple of freight cars since 2014. Prior to then, I would get 2-3 a week from my LHS, in preparation for eventual retirement which happened in mid-2015. In late 2014, I decided that I had enough and the shelf was also full! I have been slowly introducing them to the layout ever since, maybe 10-12 a year. Decided over the weekend to gift myself with a "Ten Days of Christmas" this year and introduce a new one every day for 10 days. Most will be RTR cars, so it's easy! So here's day 2's gift to myself. This is an Intermountain tanker.

1765890683979.jpeg

This is not quite RTR, but almost. It comes with these parts for the modeler to install.
1765890738125.jpeg

The air hoses are easy, but I don't know what the 2 round washers(?) are for. I already have a growing collection of them in the details cabinet.
1765890838563.jpeg

The tanker itself is a 19,600 gallon, 40' one which is generally used for heavy corn syrup. This is confirmed with the type of hatch and fittings on top.
1765890969168.jpeg

I did have to a bit of straightening out of the handrails around the top, as I have had to do on most of these same cars over the years.
Overall, it was no issue, weight is good, coupler height is correct and I had no flash when I used the truck tuner. IM uses their own brand of knuckle couplers and metal wheelsets. The bottom detail is extremely well done, but that picture just didn't look good. I'll try again today. It is worth noting that this particular car is actually out of range for my era by a few years, but Trinity used this car design starting in the late 80's which fits in OK. I have a few others with a build date of 1988 and they are identical.

Terry - Convenience is what we might sacrifice in order to live where we are most comfortable. For us, the closest grocery store was 12 miles away, but took less than 15 minutes to get to it. Then it closed down due to Interstate expansion. We still went 25 miles to the Kroger in Denton because it had better prices and selection. But even now, it still only takes 30 minutes to get there. Commuting 50 miles to work each way took at best 44 minutes due to the time of day I went in and left. But I am still happy with my choice of home location.
Karl - Our "snowbirds" here are city folk that want to experience the "country life". 90% only last 18 months or so.
Tom O - Despite it being on sale, I had to pass on the tenderloin Sunday. I love it and it looked good, but I am currently out of room in the freezer!
I think that you did "Post Reply" yesterday, as I saw it as post #856 and again with the added verbiage in post #864.
Todd - Happy Birthday. I start another orbit in about 2 1/2 weeks.

Guitarist Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top is 76 today.

Everyone have a great Tuesday.

Good morning gang!

17° under cloudy skies with a high expected today of 36°. Woo hoo the heat wave.

Actually , we have warmer temps on tap through the weekend with Saturday and Sunday getting into the 50s. So all this white stuff laying about the yard in the roadways should disappear.

Gotta call the doctor today and see what he wants to do next. After the surgery, they upped my Avoratatin dosage. One of the listed side effects is muscle weakness, and joint pain and oh boy it has hit with a vengeance. I had a little discomfort with the old dosage, but it wasn’t anything I couldn’t live with. Now getting out of the chair or getting out of a vehicle, the first two or three steps are an adventure, hips don’t wanna straighten,,my muscles can barely pull me off the John. My movement looks really bad for a guy that’s only 64.
