Good Morning All, on this shortest day of the year. Clear with a chilly temperature of 27°. Still have the same dreary weather forecast for high north winds and clear skies tomorrow eventually dropping the low temperature to single digits Friday morning. Might have sunshine Saturday and make it up to 33° in the early afternoon. Low Saturday morning around 20°, well above single digits. Upper 60's by this time next week!
My forecast is not as severe as Patrick has, about 300 miles north of me. Wind chill of -15°, but just for 24 hours, and no snow expected.

I'll go to the grocery store today for a few items that they were out of last week that weren't critical. They're still not critical, but I have some other errands to go on as well. I expect some panic shopping today and a lot more tomorrow. I skipped the trip to town yesterday with my wife. She was going to a few "girlie" stores and Walmart. She reported back that Walmart was an absolute madhouse, as I expected.

Out in the train shed yesterday, I completed the ballasting of the four tracks that I intended, all 64' of them. At the south end, they remain undone, but I got as far as I had planned. Leaving that end unfinished because I haven't determined the final track geometry there yet.

From this picture, you can also see that I have advanced the ground cover on the left and started it between the tracks as well.
I also worked on the horse corral next to the last home in the existing town of Jamestown.

Once the mounting glue sets up, I intend to hit it with some dull coat and weathering. I decided that the horses were large enough that if I accidentally knocked one off, I should be able to find it, unlike the doggie next door which I fear is gone forever; or inside the hand-held vacuum.

Tom O - Open house from noon to 9:00 pm!!! I'm too old for a party of that length. Have fun.
regeiter - I am also a sucker for P2K kits. Just before retiring while I was still buying freight cars, I purchased over 30 Accurail kits. I think that I have two left on the unbuilt shelf.
Alan - I have been extremely lucky with P2K kits. The only parts that break on me are the roof grabs on covered hoppers. But I also ream out all holes on all parts with a small drill bit in a pin vise. Figured that out on the first one that I built over 20 years ago.
Curt - That is my only European car. My brother in law gave it to me for Christmas maybe 8 or 9 years ago. He said the LHS guy said that it would run on HO track, which it does. Problem is that there were no couplers on it and it is 80 years before my era. Kadees do not fit. I think that it was Chris who told what European coupler to use, but it still wouldn't have mated up with anything that I have. He purchased it for the Heineken logo on it.

Besides being the first day of winter today, it is the birthday of two notable persons in the entertainment business. The late musician Frank Zappa would have been 82, and Hanoi Jane (Jane Fonda) is 85 today.

Everybody have a great day.

Good morning. Today, I get to remove the remaining pressure bandages and shower, which everyone will appreciate. Lite activity for 5 more days, then back to normal for a while.
Nasty fire in Northeast Philly just after Midnight this morning. One person had to jump from a second story window. No word on condition.
The parcel containing the wife's Christmas Gifts arrived yesterday. That relieved a lot of stress. All I have to do is wrap them.
Second son is driving up from Coastal Carolina on Thursday, in the rain. Temperatures will be in the 50s, because the Ocean is still warm.
I don't think I'll get anywhere the layout this week. Doing steps is worse with only one arm available..
Have a great First Day of Winter.

Thursday night into Friday morning:

90% chance of rain with temps in the lower 40s.

90% chance of rain continues through the wee hours of Friday morning... and by 4:00AM Friday, the temps are supposed to be a high of 10 degrees F with wind chills dipping near 40 degrees F below zero. At some point, the rain will turn into ice/snow mix, and with the temps that cold, the brine solution will have a hard time keeping the roads clear.

I don't mind snow. But ice sucks.

I agree about the ice being bad, snow I am use to, however it is when the snow starts blowing and visibility goes to zero that I begin to worry...

Willie, there are various adapters you can use to convert a European tension lock (I'm assuming that was the type fitted originally) to a Kadee coupler, if you can post a foto of the underside I should have at least several that would fit, I'll happily send you a few different types to try.

As most of you know, my layout is exclusively DCC. That means now that it's in storage, and my empire consists of a 3x4 plywood base with Unitrack, and DC only, I needed to pick up a few DC engines.
I have 5, plus a pair of the old LifeLike steam engines I hadn't converted yet. There are only two that I got that aren't DCC ready. They were so cheap I couldn't resist. Both of them are the old Atlas/Kato RS3s.
Whenever I regain the use of my layout, everything but them will be converted, and I'll make a decision on them at that time.

Terry are you in Florida now?

FSM kits are tricky. Way WAY more get collected than built. Also, Sellios' methods are dated, and his kits contain a pretty strong amount of whimsy where the trend these days is towards more prototypical looking structures. Don't get me wrong, I like his stuff, but if you compare his kits to kits by say, Sierra West Scale Models, there's better stuff out there, that's easier to build. When selling them off, you have to find the guy who wants "that kit".

Interesting enough there are lots of Details West box car kits out there. I get a few now and then as they are pretty nice.

Oh boy, what a mess near Chattanooga !

I just saw this video.....TERRIBLE!! I hope those guys in the cab are ok and they survived. That was a hit! OUCH! These truck companies will hire anybody nowadays. When I drove, man you never did this! Always had to plan, plan, and plan more for your routes etc.. I feel bad for the engineer and conductor most certainly not the truck driver.

There is an actual Twitter video that someone has of this entire wreck....it's incredible.

Well, howdy there internet peeps, and those in Japan spreading holiday cheer!

It's Troy again.

I just finished up the last of the French Toast Shopping.

For those of you in other parts of the globe that don't get mega ice and snow winter storms, we all make a run on the grocery to get milk, eggs, and bread. the ingredients for French toast.

I also remembered to get an empty LP tank for the grill switched out. That gives me two full-ish ones to run the dual-fuel generator if we lose power. I've also got 5 gal of petrol/gas for it if it goes too long. About the only thing I haven't done is convert the power line into the gas furnace to a pigtail, that I can unplug, and connect the generator's extension to. Running Gas heat with a blower motor shouldn't be beyond the generator's capacity. (it's on a 15a breaker, and the generator more than covers that.)

Still not sure what I'm doing with the layout design. Started putting WS Foam inclines on the "new" section. I can make the upper elevation loop work. I just need to figure out what I want to model on the lower elevation.

The yellow end is going to get scrapped, unfortunately. Once I figure out the lower elevation, I need to convert the decline in the pic below to a flat curve elevation for the upper elevation loop.

Wow I just finished catching up with this thread! A lot going on in here!

I am in the office today and tomorrow. I will be home on Friday preparing for the big freeze we have coming this weekend. I need to move some firewood into the garage for easy access. I will be burning wood for sure to help the furnace keep the temps stable in the house. I am not looking forward to the rain and high winds at 14° then dropping to single digits! I don't mind dry cold but wet cold with wind NOPE. Oh well I will be prepared. I will have to make sure mom n pops have their generator ready too. In case we lose power to down powerlines.

I think the rest of my Amazon orders come in today or maybe tomorrow. Waiting for my metal peg boards for the work bench area and my LEDs lights. I also got a new gadget coming sometime next week. I told TomO about it. I recently received 3 large collections of 35mm slides (over 1,000 slides) from the 1950s thru the 80's. Very good photographers. All of the slides were labeled to when, where and what. Just an incredible find that I acquired. So I ordered a new 35mm scanner that will create digital format files for me. I am looking forward to doing the scanning and viewing of these old slides. I looked at a few already and I am tickled to see this stuff. Mostly Union Pacific, Western Pacific and Southern Pacific. I also got 50 slides of the D&H where all the pics were taken from my local area that I live in now. So that is kinda cool too.

I ran trains last night for about 15 minutes. I tried out my new meter that I posted on the RPO thread. Works as it should, very well. I have been in a funk due to holidays and missing my baby sister but I am trying to keep forging ahead and keeping busy. My focus and zest if you will is a little off. I know time will heal but it still gets to ya. My nephews 1 & 2 will be with me for Christmas. Nephew 3, the Marine is in Okinawa, Japan on training maneuvers.

Not much else to report other than I did win an Athearn Union Pacific 2 bay covered hopper ACF 2970 in Rock Island blue that was "primed/grime" for Union Pacific recording marks with a few patch jobs on the car. It's my second one in the release series I got now. there is one more out there I am looking for. I think they run these in 3s now not sure.

Ya'll have a good day.

Good Morning All!
6F and cloudy.

Got about 10" of new white the last day or so. Weather guessers say it is supposed to drop to -14F later tonight, down further to -18F about 0500 tomorra. Does not get above 0 again until Friday sometime. Also Friday through Sunday, more of the white stuff. Wind is blowing as I eWrite this but not all that hard. Still is cold on the cheeks though. Putting my insulated CarHarts on and out in the stuff to go for some firewood splitting. I suspect I will be up midnight keeping the cook stove going to get us through the really low stuff. Oh well, I know where I live.

Y'all keep warm.

Later

Charlie Dog,

This is the first time I have seen you post. Could you tell us where it gets dark at 4 pm and is going to be 80°, also something about yourself?

Thanks, Dave LASM
YOU have forgotten me already - shame, shame, DAVE.
I cannot find my old Avatar of SNOOPY on this MAC which I still have not "mastered".

Loved the Accurail kits. But the way they came up with the coupler and truck mounting was frustrating. They could have used screws. (Yeah, you too Atlas, ready to run Kaolin cars)😜
