Oh boy, what a mess near Chattanooga !

I saw the derailment video earlier today direct on you tube. A specialized load like that should have had front and rear safety vehicles. The driver of the concrete beam and the safety team thankfully are not injured but deserve to be terminated from their jobs. The safety team did not do their jobs, that’s for sure. I did read the the train crew while injured should recover.

Watch how the concrete beam the locomotive is pushing is tearing up the tracks. You cannot legislate out negligence and that is the trucker in this accident

Morning all,

Busy the past couple of days, and hopefully it's a slower day. After the meeting out of the office on Monday afternoon, I've been busy cleaning up a mess made by spammers and idiots who click on links in phishing emails. Seems like the more I educate people, the stupider they get. Not bad enough they click the link once, but to have them click multiple times because the link doesn't open....oh well, 5 years and 1.5 months until retirement.

I'm typing this from the bottom of page 42, and there are at least 5 pages to catch up on, so I'll do that and comment further.

We appear to be receiving a Christmas present from our Canadian friends beginning Thursday.
The weather guessers are predicting a Friday morning low of 8 degrees F in central Alabama with a wind chill of -15 degrees F.
This is a shock to us from the 72 degree F weather we had last week.
It has been 30 years since we have had temps this low, much less at Christmas time.
Our normal low for this time of year is in the low 40s. It is not as bad as other places in the nation, but it is unusual for us.

Not much problem for modeling, but it does make the glue and paint take longer to dry.

Morning again,

It's 24° and cloudy and a high later of 37°, the overnight the bottom drops out. Low tomorrow morning of 1° and expected high of 4°. Snow accumulation of about an inch, but winds in the 40+ mph range will make than snow hard to measure and low visibility expected. Wind chill in the -25° range through Friday with a wind chill warning through Friday afternoon. At least the winter storm watch has been changed to a winter weather advisory and snow amounts have been lowered.

Boris: Glad the procedure went well, sad to hear about a valve issue.

So far it quiet, but city hall is only beginning to open.

Good morning all, currently -16° F and no wind. We are gripping for a big snowstorm, 40-50 MPH winds expected, supposed to be ready for power outages.

I am at work, old burby started this morning no plug in, I am sure that new battery has something to do with it, along with the regular maintenance.

will be checking back when more people are up

Good morning from a rather cold start to a Wisconsin day. -1f degrees or -18.3c but the wind chill is at -14f or -25.5c. The high though should be +19f/-7.2c. A good indoor morning at least. There is a Winter Weather Advisory from 6PM tonight till 6PM Thursday where they say because the 6-9” of falling white stuff is coming with 35-50 mph winds it could result in blizzard like conditions. The Winter Storm Watch though is from Thursday at 6PM to Saturday at 6AM. Basically says the same as the Advisory. In other words, nasty weather is on its way. There is a caveat though, because the weather track is not confirmed yet, the resultant weather may not reach all the mentioned counties.

The weather prophecy may not be exact but we understand no matter what weather we get, our fly in guests are going to have travel issues. After all, you have to believe the weather guessers sometimes. But, nothing anyone can do about that and who shows up, shows up. Terry, the daughter’s family and the horses are ready. Today supposedly is the last action in Terry’s kitchen bakery. The SIL started smoking salmon, turkey, ribs and ham yesterday. I have no clue what flavors or in what order. The ham and ribs are great. I can do without the rest being smoked. He will smoke a brisket under our son’s helpful advice to make it a Texas type for Christmas.

My inventory of rolling stock is complete. I have worked since 2015 to achieve the right balance of rolling stock on the layout and after purchasing 3 tank cars Sunday I have done it for a 2015 operating session. There is a slight problem though. The layout is gone.

Today the paint booth that’s been in storage for the past couple weeks will be installed at the place we will call home for at least the next year. I have many personal weathering projects to do and offer for sale. So the booth is a necessity. Because of the knee I had to ask the SIL and a couple employees to help me tonight. The pool needs to have its people protection devices added. Because we were planning on holding lots of parties when this house was built I had coverings for the pool made. The pool was a later addition to the house. The lower level of the house flows onto the pool decks and I don’t want to worry about folks stumbling into the water. It takes a few hours for Terry and me, hopefully much less for the 3 coming.

enjoy the day

We are back. Actually been back about an hour I would guess. 10:45pm and 45F and it was sprinkling lightly as we walked from the station to the hotel.

I left about an hour after the family. I left the room about 45 min after they did but had to wait at the front desk. Amazon had delivered a package I had had sent to us here and I wanted to pick it up — some show inserts for the daughter. The front desk had 2 people working it and a line so I had to wait a bit. At first I waited at the Bell Captain desk about 5-7 minutes but no one showed up so I went to the front desk.

I caught up to the family at the kimono rental place In Asakusa. We were there another while as they finished up getting fitted. My sons was done when I got there but the daughter was having the hair style upgrade being done. It turned out really nice. It appears to be common to rent kimonos for special occasions or for fun and there were a lot of women and a few men walking around in kimonos. No on bats an eye. They also had the getta shoes (my sons were wooden sandals, the daughters a better material.

We wandered around Asakusa and went to the temple area large gates, the temple, etc. All around the temple is a shopping district with little stalls and then further out special old style shopping streets with restaurants, various vendors, etc.

We spent several hours walking around these streets (and past to a “mall” where the daughter and wife found some clothes on sale (of course) — I kept looking for the “man benches” but they didn’t have any — they’d probably sell more stuff if they had a place for the dudes to sit while the wives and GFs shop since the stores were basically a girl stores like clothes and perfume and handbags.

My daughter did find another game arcade with the prize machines (claw and other similar machines). They ended up with several prizes.

Here are the prizes from the last two days of claw machines (blanket included).

Finally we had to return the Kimono so we went back and did that and then took a train two stops to the Tokyo Skytree, which is the 3rd. Tallest structure in the world and is the tallest TV tower. It as a lower observation deck at 350 m (actually 3 stories from 340m-350m but you Start at 350m I think and then have to go down two levels to go back down on a different elevator). There is also a smaller observation deck at 450m that costs extra and you have to get on a different elevator at the lower observation deck. We were there 9 years ago during the day and went to the 350m one. This time it was dark and we did the combo 350+450. To be honest, at least in the dark, it didn’t look that much different than the 350m deck’s view. In fact being up that high and looking out and down was a lot less “scary” and “woozy”-inducing than the last time we were there during the day. Maybe your eyes pick up fewer clues to the height even though you see small buildings and stuff below you.

There was also a glass flour at the 340m level. I had no problem walking out on it and usually I don’t like those and have to force myself. That and the whole tower was an interesting experience.

After we went down we went to the food court in the shopping center that is part of and around the base of the Skytree — partly underground. I had a Yaki Niku beef rice bowl. It had a barely boiled egg on top and was thinly sliced and Japanese BBQ grilled beef over rice, the egg, and a small amount of Kimchi, Asian style spinach (which is awesome), and some daikon radish. I also had a “Calpis Soda”, which is a good milk based soda — hard to describe but it is really good. The son had ramen and some gyoza (Japanese pot stickers), the daughter just a ton of gyoza, and the wife some Japanese Udon (thick chewy noodles in broth) and some gyoza. Gyoza are common with Ramen.

Then we took the train home to the hotel.

I bought 3 more gachapon (the capsule toys) for my desk toy collection. I got one at the Skytree (the Skytree model, which lights up but I didn’t want to pull the battery tab on yet so I had to hold it down for the pic as the tab was pushing it up and over). The other two (a model of a modular shower) and the pig god thing with the unicorn horn at Asakusa.

And to make this a train post, here are the three Toei Subway “Asakusa Line” trains I took today there and back. Toei is a private rail operator that helps by running some lines of the subway system.

So it looks like we may have been spreading disease and pestilence in our wake. As I mentioned, we were feeling a little under the weather when we left but had actually mostly felt better (my daughter and I — wife and son felt fine). We had all tested negative for Covid (TL;DR — still are negative for Covid) but the long flight and lack of sleep, plus a week of jet lag and less sleep cause my daughter and I to get worse again and the wife started feeling coughy and scratchy. So far the son has been spared. Today I‘m feeling a lot better and had energy, and not much coughing at all, and deep breaths didn’t lead to cough fits etc. We’ve never had fevers that we know of.

Monday we found out my sister in law had a fever and she has been sick this week. She‘s been tested multiple times since then for Covid (this is Japan which still has this inordinate fear of Covid) and with all her negatives the doctor wanted to order even more Covid testing. She is an RN and suggested an influenza test of some sort. The doctor said they never do that but she insisted and indeed it was positive. The doctor was surprised as they had not seen much flu. We don’t know if she got it from us but she probably did, despite the different symptoms. The sister in Kobe also had a sore throat and her husband, an MD, was not feeling great Monday and came home early and was off anyway Tuesday but was feeling fine today and went to work.

So just in case, we are not going back tomorrow but are extending our stay in Tokyo two extra days. I found another (not as nice as the Hilton but reasonable looking hotel not far from where we are at). Saturday, we’ll probably go to Nagasaki and stay two nights. I made a hotel reservations but we’ll make the final call Friday night as we can cancel and get full refund for the hotel through Friday night. We want to all feel almost 100% a couple days before we go back. The MD brother in law can’t get sick for various (political) reasons so we are trying to keep everyone healthy.

So our Christmas may be spent at a hotel in Nagasaki instead of in Kobe. We’ll see if we can walk in at a KFC…

It's been a great virtual tour! Thanks for all the photos!
