Curt - Like the photo. Are those the old MDC passenger cars. I was going through some old boxes I had and found 4 MDC cars that I had painted for the Logan Valley. May have to take a photo of them. Those are the original Atlas Alcos with the Kato drive. The train did need the third locomotive due to the grade. I probably could have put a few more cars on, but the curve at the top of the grade is super elevated and the cars at the front of the train were looking like they may want to tip over if there was much more weight. If the did tip over, they would have wiped out a hear of 1/87 cattle.

Dave - Thanks for stopping by. You were absent for quite a while.

Time to head to the house and let the dogs out to pee. Later.

Good Morning All. 26° and mostly cloudy today. Forecast to be into the low 40's later today. Won't be back into the 60's until Monday.
Well, I made it. Today is my big 65th birthday. Amazing that I made it this far considering some of the antics from my youth! Still have some domestic projects to start/complete in the house this week...cuts into train time!!!
Trainwise, I just fiddled around with various things yesterday. Finished the first low-relief structure of the three that I started, but left the camera in the train shed so I'll post a picture later. Dismantled another loco that has been in storage since 2009, so I can start cleaning and lubing it today. Stared at a pile of Accurail kits trying to decide which one I want to do next...20+ kits of three different freight cars, all of which need re-numbering with their re-numbering sets. Contemplated painting some more backdrop, but deferred until another day. And of course ran some trains.

Louis - Not the best way to start the new year. Get well soon.
Everybody have a great day.

Willie

Happy Birthday Willie!

your train work sounds like so much fun! When I do really retire I will have stolen so many of your ideas. Not the least of which is the separate train building, I really hope I can make that work.

As for my not so great start, yeah, could have been better, but it could have been much worse. If I had been under the grass my start would look like a great one!

GOUT? What the... Thought that only hit rich guys that lived in the 1800's! Seriously I heard that can get bad, take it easy!

I think gout maybe genetic too, but God knows I have eaten more than my fair share of meat, nuts, beer and shellfish.

My pharmacist told me "gout is the disease of kings" I said I could not be further from a king. He said "only a king can eat that much meat"

Good morning, all. 13 degrees and clear here in Springfield. Supposed to get down to 7 tomorrow night, lows in the teens through the weekend. Still, Chet's got us beat, not that I'm wanting to enter a competition with him :) Need more coffee right now!! Haven't even fired up our woodburning fireplace yet, but probably will Friday night.

Bruette - Sorry to hear about the gout. I tend to have flareups about twice a year. I have meds for it, but I hate taking prescription meds if I can help it. My wife and I are into naturopathic approaches to health. My personal opinion is that some of the naturopathic stuff works for some people but not all. In my case, I've found that eating cherries (fresh, in a jar, dried, almost any form) helps. Some years ago I realized that when I get a flareup, if I chow down on cherries, maybe 30-40 of 'em, within 1-3 hours the flareup is gone. So for the past few years I eat some cherries every day, usually the dried unsweetened kind, and keep a jar of cherries handy just in case. Last year (2016) I had only one flareup rather than the usual two, and a quick dose of 40 cherries took care of it. Again, some things work for some people, some not.

Johnny I have heard that about Cherries, I have not tried it yet. Fruit makes me a bit nervous, one; I don't like most fruit, no joke and two; I am diabetic and it is hard to tell how much sugar is in any fruit and fructose is one of the worst sugars for a diabetic.

I use to take medication to prevent and dispel flare ups, but kidney disease put an end to that option. Now I just don't eat anything to make it worse when it comes. This flare up has improved drastically in the last 2 days. I even managed to work 1 1/2 hours and get paid for 4 today.

I have not had a bad flare up like this one in several years. I think because I drank 2 ales had new York strip cooked on the weber and a crab cake, in one day. I earned the flare up.

Feel free to call me Louis, we are all friends here. My buddy Bruce and the rest of us will back me up on that.

Louis - Sorry to hear about the gout flaring up. I have a good friend who has is and at times it can be quite a problem for him. Hope you get over it soon.

Chet I am already doing better, thank you!

Louis- That does look like a good deal.

I hope everybody has a good night.

Curt I want to call Phil, but I am unsure of a good time for him. If you talk to him ask him when is best to call for me please, thank you.

Those Pullman cars are a great deal I think, they list for $159.99 in the Lionel catalog.

I got my Pennsylvania Flyer LionChief Remote Set today :)

and my Pennsylvania LionChief Remote Keystone Deluxe GP38 Freight Set will be here tomorrow. :) :) :)

LOUIS - So sorry that you are having medical issues. No fun for sure! That photo of the electrics' is GREAT! Love it!

PHIL asked me to call around 8 am my time - 11 am for him- so I would say that about that time is good. (PS: He asked me to NOT send him any more naked ladies pic as his wife didn't like it- lol)

CURT OUTSTANDING PHOTO! Sorry about the signal box .. I know that you worked hard on them!

WILLIE - Congratulations on the milestone you have reached - May you only be half way to your final goal!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you!

Beautiful day out here today .. we are looking at the possibility of additional rain tomorrow!

Thank you Sherrel, If I have time tomorrow I will give Phil a call.

My health issues are minor and improving, no worries my friend.

I will chime with a Happy Birthday to Willie

Here is a few shots of some weathering I got done over the weekend. This is a Athearn RTR loco, weathered with many layers of thin washes airbrushed on and chalks.
You guys ever use a good sand colored chalk that doesn't go away with dull coat?

Hi Chet, started working on cleaning out the folks house and organizing the documents. I found my mothers birth certificate, she was born at home. Also many other important documents.

I should be active the rest of the week!

Willie--Happy Birthday!!

TOM HOLLY - That first photo of #952, when I enlarged it to the max, I swear that I was looking at a real locomotive. Excellent job - right down to the streak of fuel from the filler neck!

Good evening gents.

Louis - sorry to hear about the gout, I never knew that was a "meat eaters disease"! Sounds like you got a handle on it though. Hope you'll be recovered soon enough to get back on a normal work schedule.

Willie - HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Karl - congrats to Son #3 on reaching the "Age of Majority"!

Tom H - Nice weathering job on that Frisco unit! As for chalks, I've simply stopped using them on models that would need a lot of handling; spraying dullcote on them gets them wet, and they stay looking wet. I've had better luck using heavily-thinned flat acrylics as a final coat, after all regular paint and lettering has been applied and fixated.

Well, I believe I've finally beaten this "flu wannabee" illness! I was able actually make significant progress on my current mrr project, i.e. repairing the rear truck mechanism in the Proto2000 E8. Wound up drilling thru the center of the broken gear and chopping inserting a 5.4mm long piece of an aluminum finishing nail since that was the only thing I could get my hands on that was the correct diameter. Toughest part was getting the gear back into place on the truck. Tested it and VOILA - it worked! Hope I never have to do anything like this again...

Louis, so, Gout eh!. High Uric acid in the system, crystallises in the joints. Causes severe arthritis.

Whenever I get something from a hobby shop in a town somewhere in the US, I usually do a Google street view to find it, 'cause it makes it a little more personal that way, sort'a like going there. I've never done it with MBKleins though. Whad'ya reckon the chances would be I'd spot you coming out the door with an armful of Lionel gear, if I did.

Good evening albeit Late again fellow Spike Drivers & Ballast Tampers, kindly realize in my earlier time period the late 1890's to 1900's, track laying was labor intensive, nothing like it probably is today!

Hi Flo & Francine, It's great you keep Jeffreys' Dinner open and nice and warm for us folks in the Cold Winter we have here in the U.S.A. I think might enjoy some of this cold weather for a while? How about some water and a Apple Fritter? Thanks.

The weather here has been rainy and wet but I didn't notice what I would call an great downpours. I didn't actually get a chance to measure the rain fall as I had something like a touch of the intestinal flu or something earlier this morning and had to back out on taking a friend up to pick-up their car at the repair shop. Then later on I felt better and did finally manage to drive them the 12 miles up to the town North of where I'm at.

This evening is about 38* and light rain.

I did get my auto registration paid last night on line too buy some time, as I again-for the second year in a row, am supposed to get my fuel injected Eclipse Smogged and I may have to replace the idle rpm sensor if I can't clean it up after pulling it off. Maybe it's as simple as replacing an O-ring seal between the sensor and the block? More funn and games! I had all kinds of problems last time as the cars computer would not clear three of the codes. Then I found a guy and a smog place who knew what he was doing and said my model of Eclipse GST is known for that and so they exempt them. It passed jut fine then! It's always run great too!

Say Willie: Happy Belated Birthday!

I'll have to get Phil's phone # from Sherrel or Curtand give and give him a call.

Say Sherrel: Kind of sounds like you got your wings clipped a bit sending Phil extra viewing materials from the local baudy house!

Say Louis: Sorry to hear about your Gout. I did a search with Fire Fox about it and here a link that brings a number of different links you might want to look into if you haven't already?

Hope all of you have a good day tomorrow!

Oh, java, java, java me! TWO shots from the bottle under the counter please! It got down to 14 bloody degrees last night but SHE was "hot" and closed the heat vent in our room. Menopause is a wonderful thing.

Good Morning All. Overcast and 30° this morning. Rather dreary day yesterday with the temperature never getting above 36°; although I did spend a bit of time outside cutting firewood for a bit of exercise. That and the usual walk after the sun came out around 4:00. Thanks to all for the well wishes on my birthday. However I must be getting less attractive as I haven't had any date requests from Russian women appearing in my spam folder in over a week!!! Still getting the enhancement promos though.
Out in the train shed, I continued to just do general maintenance things. Vacuumed about 60' of the lower level and found the usual assortment of stray rolling stock parts like brake wheels and air hoses. Now to find the cars missing those parts. The green brake wheel should be easy, BN anyone?

Johnny - I hear you on the tiny workbench. I haven't built a permanent one yet as all of the plywood for the layout is leaning up against the wall where I intend to build it. I've been using a small 18" x 12" section of benchwork alongside a mainline! Of course once I get everything built and all of the wood out of the way I won't need the workbench anymore, except for minor maintenance projects!!! You mention "naturopathic approaches to health", good stuff.
Curt - Hated to read about the malfunctioning signal, especially after all of the work you documented making them. Glad to hear that Phil is doing well. Wondered about him as I have not received one of his zany E-Mails in a while.
Sherrel -
(PS: He asked me to NOT send him any more naked ladies pic as his wife didn't like it- lol)
She doesn't want him to have a heart attack.
Tom - Excellent weathering on the Frisco loco. You captured the look especially well. I may have posted this before, but the place where I worked for over 40 years was alongside the SLSF (Frisco) main from Dallas to Sherman TX, and I got to view a lot of Frisco power until the BN takeover. I also got to see them make the "flying switch" maneuver many times at the siding across the tracks from us; through a grade crossing no less!
Bruce - Hahaha!

Everyone have a great day.

Willie

Only RR themed pics are allowed right?
OK!
imagesI0UVKOVZ.jpgI don't care WHAT "they" say I do LIKE me some Taylor Swift! Sweetly Pretty she is! Just one GOOD lookin girl!

Good morning, everyone. 18 degrees and 1-2 inches of snow on the ground here in Springfield. Flurries expected most of today. Give me coffee, coffee, coffee! I'm right there with ya, Bruce!! Predicting 10 degrees tonight, 7 tomorrow night. If this keeps up, we'll catch up to Chet :) Good news is we'll warm into the 40s after the weekend; bad news is most of the folks here don't have a clue how to drive on snow and patchy ice. I grew up in NY and VT and can drive on this with one hemisphere of my brain tied behind my back. 'course, it helps to have an AWD SUV, but experience and common sense help a lot. On the way into work, saw one truck halfway into a ditch, and another sliding back down a hill - trucks, mind you!! We passed 'em both with no probs.

Curt and others - Something in the chemical makeup of cherries helps reduce uric acid buildup in the bloodstream; I think it's a combination of the antioxidant anthocyanim and vitamin C. Anyway, as someone else mentioned, there are many websites that investigate this phenomenon. Do a quick Google search of "cherries and gout" or something like that.

Willie - With several others, I say belated happy birthday. My current work area isn't as small as the one you're working in. Mine's about 2.5 ft wide and maybe 2 ft deep. But I've got the space set up to move to - just a piece of plywood across a couple of sawhorses, so it's temporary, too. I'm keeping my eye out for a nice CHEAP workbench at Harbor Freight or someplace that I can make into a real modeling center. Did I mention CHEAP?!?!

Terry - that is one loooong train! I didn't count the cars, but that thing would come close to encircling my entire layout :)

Tom Holly - great photo. I agree, it's extremely realistic. Nice job.

Well, gotta run. Later.
Johnny

Good morning fellers. Getting our first significant if you can call it that snowfall this year today. 3 inches I don't consider to be significant but the weathermen are flipping! You would think we are getting a blizzard. Anyways I had a dumb moment with the lighting on my GP7/9. My bulbs are 12 volts not 1.5 like I had thought. How I messed this up I'll never know. Now the issue is the added voltage draw and non directional lighting. I don't even know if directional lighting is an option for incandescent bulbs. I know I can do it with LEDs. Maybe I should go that route. Any suggestions guys?
