Sorry guys, but there hasn't been a VW that caught my attention since I bought my '61 Beetle used in '72; for $400! It already had 150K miles (presumed since the odometer had only 5 digits) and I added another 200K by the time I sold it in '78.
You put 200k miles on it in 6 years? Wow...

My brother had an old 70s Super Beetle. It was interesting until it "died" (this was back in the 90s). I think it had a sun roof that was either leaking or missing -- it's been about 30 years so my memory is faint -- and he had a piece of plywood in it.

I remember as a kid trying to get my folks to buy a Super Beetle back around 73. They ended up with a Toyota Corona.

good morning peeps

Warm and muggy already here in Verdy Valley, AZ. Did my morning walk. Half of it is slight downhill.
Went to the WDHS layout again yesterday and ran my DDA40X with a 40 car cattle train. I'll post my video of that after I get home. Allen shot some video too and published his yesterday. If I can find it, I'll post it here too.
As my sim-racing friends say: If there aren't pictures, it didn't happen.
Video is even better, and I look forward to seeing it

If you spell it backwards, Driver Returned On Foot.
Well, there's a saying in motor racing: If your driver doesn't walk back to the pits carrying only the steering wheel now-and-then, he isn't really trying. Note that the saying dates way back before the era of the detachable wheel.
As for me, it's been German cars too--I was raised on the passenger side floor of dad's Porsche 356, and later his '66 911. My own first was badged Porsche as well, although the ol' 914 was really a Karmann Ghia/Volkswagen hybrid. Never did have a six, just the four.
Jeep kid after that too--I drove my first accident in a CJ-5, where I managed to eject myself out through the detached driver's door. Lesson learned: Do not try "Laudaesque" cornering in a Jeep on a descending, newly graveled road.

Here it is memorialized on my layout with me, my wife and my BIL, all at 1978 weight!

That's a good model, and I love the original wheels.

I swear...those plate-pics alone must be responsible for the growing donut around and above my belt line. I don't eat even one real meal a day right now. so I just don't get it, even if I can look down and see it.
BTW...we are already up to 25 pages, but are just a third of the way through July. Being a blabbermouth when I can get in, I'd blame myself...but I just can't get in much any more.
Must be a community effort kinda thing then. Cool.

Well, at least ya got thrown clear of the wreckage. Main reason for not wearing a seatbelt.

Did you use your chain mail gloves?
No, he's pretty easy going once you catch him. Usually opening a can of Tuna works if he's being hard to catch. He could bite me, and has been known to nip the wife, but he doesn't. I actually trust him more giving him a pill that I trust the little dog. (Pit Bull, Chihuahua, Min Pin, Pekinese mix). That little wench is crazy. The Border Collie is easy, wrap the pill in a pill pocket or bologna and its down the hatch!

Cars are 'not my thing'. Got one off course. We need to get from A to B.

My favourite (only) car story.

Travelling down the road in my 'trusty Austin Montego'; I mean rusty Austin Montego,, a Porsche behind.
Aha this Porsche is not going to pass me.
One mile travelled my Montego in the lead.
With a smile two miles and still leading. The old Montego held her own.

At the two an half mile marker we came out of the road works. My moment of glory ended. A cloud of dust ahead.

Good Morning All!
67F @ 59% yet another hot day. Got to 102F yesterday ... yuk!

Pet Pills: Used to be any dog or cat we had was like pulling teeth to get pills down the craw. Enter Jake. All ya have to do is call him and drop what ever on the floor and it goes away. All the others sans one is dip it in butter then it goes away. That one sucks all the butter off then spits the pill. So for him it is smash up the pill, mix with bacon grease then it is gone. While we are talking about pets - Jake is a 'heavy chewer'. Nothing on the floor or what he can reach is safe and gets teeth marks. Maria has lost 3 pairs of shoes so far. He even chewed the bottom corner of the hot tub ( Redwood ). Kitchen towels are 'removed' from the hanging spots and when found have a hole pretty much dead center. He was dragging one of the 100Ft hoses this morning. So I did some 'googling' and found what looks to be the ideal chew. Virtually indestructible hard rubber that is bacon flavored. We have another hard rubber thingie and it has made it through 5 dogs over the years; alas no bacon flavor. We will see.

Since it is gonna be another hot one, we decided to do picnic basket fixing's and go get high. Planning on going over the top toward Trego along the HiLine. Will take camera thinking BNSF will want pix of itself. If not, oh well .. there should be neat scenery and a few animals if they are not bedded down cuz of the heat. Will take a few weapons as they need to have the barrel's cleaned. Some poor stump is gonna get a little extra weight. Maria has not practiced for a few months, so that will be her job.

To see bigger, surf to maps.google.com and enter 'flathead tunnel' in the search bar. You can scroll around if following the HiLine between Libby and Stryker is what you wish. I went up near the end of May and ran into thick ice/snow on the road just before Wolf Prairie. Had nothing with me that would help if stuck, so turned around knowing I/we would be back. Kinda looking forward to this as we have not gotten our butts outa the house for just play for quite awhile.

Later

Well, howdy there internet subjects. It's Troy again.

Speaking of cats, my sister wanted a new set of bread back closers, or whatever the plastic wafers are that keep the bags twisted.

She asked me to print these up for her

cat butts.png

I'm not sure how many bags of bread, muffins, bagels etc she has as at any one time, so I sent her four. My cat agreed that seeing four cat butts at once would be good for her.

My wife asked that I not keep any. Seems she sees enough of one cat butt on a daily basis.

There are numerous reasons we don't have a dog.

#1 I was 8 when I was pulled off my bike by a country dog out without a lead. The next day was school picture day. Most of the damage to my face was from the gravel on the road's shoulder. I still have the picture. Mom told me I'd want it some day.

No mother. a photo of the aftermath of one of the scariest moments of my life is not something I ever want to see again.

Reason #2: My wife wanted a dog, and let me choose the breed to help allay my fears. She wanted it to take on walks. But I couldn't ever get her to be the responsible one. She'd always look at me.... "What are you going to do with the dog while we're on vacation?"

"Sell it? Give it away?" - Evidently, that wasn't the correct answer. But it always came down to me figuring out where to board it, who could watch it. Why me?

And I had dog poop duty any time I wanted to mow.

Not my dog, why am I picking up it's poo? Even after we had a kid, and she agreed (when we got beagle #2), she'd only pick up a few shovels of poo, then run off to do something else. It was only when she took over mowing duty for $$ that she got serious about poo removal.

They loved to chew - mostly my stuff. Rabbits too. I didn't enjoy picking up half-carcasses from the fenced in back yard. One went nuts and dug up a mole as well. More destruction. I did discover the dog didn't like molasses. Nor the front end either. She left the mole alone once it was dead.

But, even rubbing hot sauce weekly on power cords wouldn't keep the dog away from her daily dose of shock therapy. The second beagle loved chewing power cords. Speaker wire. straps. Fortunately she left the hose for the gas grill alone, but I worried.

The worst part was actually the dogs being storm scared (and fireworks... Indiana residents LOOOOOVE their fireworks). The problem was that I was too empathetic, and their emotional state made me anxious. I love rainstorms. I always found them relaxing (if they didn't come with tornadoes). A shivering animal passed their emotions on to me. Wife decided with #2 beagle that putting it down in the basement would make it less scared.

That was my hobby and TV area. All it did was train the dog to find me during storms. That backfired.

When #2 died, I asked for 26 years without a dog, since we got #1 soon after we got married. 26 years between two beagles, can I have the same time with just a cat?

Hope that doesn't come off as cold and callous. But, following the bike incident when I was 8, I've never been a dog person.
