The Orioles, owned by Peter Angelos, had an operating income of $83 million last year on revenue of $251 million, according to Forbes.
Last year's payroll - $60,327,739
$83 M is a nice profit. He shows a lot of expenses over payroll. He must be skimming a lot to MASN. If he can't make it in the Baltimore Market, he better accept Nashville's offer, and move the team out to Music City, before the White Sox or Brewers beat him to it. Baltimore has bigger issues than the loss of an entertainment provider. They need to attract jobs and train a work force.
Ultimately, one of the other teams will find their way to Baltimore, just like the Ravens did.

I used to listen to sports radio talk shows.

I remember listening to Colin Cowherd talk about the Orioles during their long demise after the wire-to-wire run in 1997. He said the Orioles would never win another division title or even make the playoffs again with Peter Angelos as owner.

Not long after the Orioles were a wild card team in 2012.

In 2014 the birds won the AL East title. They finished the season 12 games up on the second place Yankees.

Owners or money don't win games. Players win games. History proves the best won loss record in any sport doesn't guarantee a championship. When two good teams compete for a championship, anything can happen.

Winning is never easy in any sport.

I don't make predictions. I merely enjoy the show as it unfolds. Win or lose, I back my birds!

Injuries can be a wild card in any championship run.

$83 M is a nice profit
Indeed, it is, and this year's Orioles payroll is only $72+million. In first place with revenue up it looks like smart management to me.

I'd like to see all teams keep their payroll below $150 million. The Mets and Yankees spent over $600 million combined to secure last place.

Players' salaries are out of line with production with very few arguable exceptions. Longterm guaranteed contracts are foolish. It will only end when teams stop overpaying. As a fan it sucks to see players go, but the madness must end. A "market correction" is overdue!

The Birmingham weather people are reporting 79 degrees F at 6 am. Some guessers predicting 100 degrees air temp and high humidity for a 20 % chance of rain.
I have to go down to the basement and finish assembling two park benches. Several years ago, I helped my teacher daughter with Earth Day at her school. I hauled away trash in my pickup that included two rusty park benches that the slats had rotted off.
I recently cleaned up and painted the iron bench sides, cut and painted new slats and spent a surprising amount for hardware. My skills at drilling the slat holes varied from perfection. Assembling the slats and modifying some holes took over 8 hours for the two benches. All I have left is to tighten up the bolts and touch up the paint on the iron ends.
Gotta get started before it gets too warm.

Good Morning All. Clear and 78°, heading up to 108° later on today. Yesterday it hit 110° for a couple of hours, verified by two Weather Underground stations nearby. I wasn't quite believing my thermometer. NWS now predicts below 100° for a week starting tomorrow instead of Monday. Seeing is believing.

The NMRA 2023 National Train Show is being held 46 miles south of here at the Gaylord Hotel in Grapevine TX, through tomorrow. I am planning on being there tomorrow. Grapevine is midway between Dallas & Ft Worth and it's where the DFW International Airport is located.

Out in the train shed yesterday, I started the newest project of fencing in the Antiques Barn. I managed to get 29 fence pole holes drilled with the pin vise, and all of the posts mounted. I'm starting on the horizontal supports, but haven't gotten too far yet.

Additionally, I got all of the fence material cut to a scale 7' and spray painted it Gray.

Tom O - I am beginning to no longer talk politics with my wife either, but I believe that she's moving in a different direction than Terry. Mine is drifting further right and buying into too many extreme-right conspiracy theories. History can't be changed if you get my drift, move forward and quit dwelling on it. Instead of listening to fresh voices/ideas last Wednesday evening, she listened to the other guy and his cohort rehash the same old stuff. The upcoming election might be the worst choice of candidates since 1976.
Be safe on your travels.
Regarding the CD player in the Lexus, I can do with a handful of Sirius stations and no longer need the CD player. I occasionally use the one in the Accura. I need to go look to see if there is one in the Lexus!
Troy - I am with you on phone apps for stores. My Kroger though isn't as bad as what you describe. May just be the time of day that I go, which is only Thursday mornings around 10. They have 20 self-checkout lanes which usually have lines. I go to the attended cashier lane where there is never more than one person in front of me. I don't get a discount for self-check, so why should I bother! I do however download the digital coupons on their website and save between $8-$10 a week, plus the in-store discounts for having one of their cards. I don't know where my card is any more, but I can give them my landline number which is just as good. Yes, that's how long I have had the card, since before cell phones!
I complete their online survey each week for whatever good it does, but I earn 50 extra fuel points for every completed survey (1/week limit).
Sherrel - The 20,000 mp3's on the iPod are also included in the 80,000 on the computer. In the train shed, I normally just hit "random" and unless the power goes out and it resets, it may be 3-4 months before I hear a duplicate. I can also narrow it down to artists, genre, era or a myriad of other criteria, both on the computer or iPod.
Tom - Pool here just isn't cooling off at night like it usually starts to at this time of year. Despite having 150 sq ft shaded by umbrellas, it finally managed to warm up to an uncomfortable 90.5° yesterday. OK though when it's 110° air temperature! ;) I am expecting to get 4-5 more weeks usage this year. Some years labor Day is the limit, some years I have gone into October. This will most likely be one of them. It does mean more chemicals!
My garden is on hold right now, just the opposite of yours. No rain and too much sun. The tomato plants, most of them, are alive but not bearing right now and I am contemplating a fall garden which is normally planted between Sept 10 and Oct 1.

Everybody have a wonderful day and a fantastic weekend.

Well, I managed to get the park benches done and dragged out of the basement to let the paint cure in the sun.
20230826_074513.jpg

Now that I have the benches done, I can get another cup of coffee and breakfast before putting furniture in my O scale building "Birdie's Place".
I have recycled a damaged figure from the club layout, as this building will go on the layout, too.

Morning to all! Supposed to reach 95 degrees today and first of the week is projected to be 99-100 with all sunny skies!
Been loading up with the medicine the doctor sent me. I think it is helping. His instructions to me was after a few days, if it was not better to go to urgent care or ER, my choice. Today starts the third day of "doping". Yesterday, I did not feel up to anything and spent about 16 hours in bed - not like me at all!
But ... enough about me!

FRANCINE, Plz ask MEL for a plate of B&G this morning with a side of bacon. A Diet DP to drink, thank you.

BIL, JOHN, FELL yesterday, hit his head, and had to go to the ER - nasty cut! John is the one who is doing the chemo walk at the moment and has had to wear a bag due to a radiation burn that won't heal. He is in misery most of the time - existing on pain pills. Bad, Bad, Bad; I really feel for him!

MIKEY - Nice work on the benches -- Don't you think they are a tad large to fit that "O" scale building?

Everyone try and stay cool today!

Being very careful to tiptoe through the landmines laid in the field of polytics... my wife is in a similar position with Willies... 20+ years ago I started listening to the gent with the cigars who died a few years ago on talk radio... I passed that onto my wife, who was mostly apolitical.

Then I got into the gun scene in about 2008, and into the activist side that rhymes with T and Farty... and that got me connected with watching/listening to Glenn Beck...

That came to a screeching halt when he had his favorite historian on promoting a book about Thomas Jefferson. A subject that I happen to know a lot about. In politics, we can agree to disagree, and get along. But when you outright lie about historical facts to advance a political agenda, we're going to have problems. Beck got binned immediately.

That made me take a huge step back and start re-evaluating my position.

Then I started in on my master's degree (journalism technically, but it covers a lot of the communications field, since all the various disciplines within draw from the same well.) And I started studying propaganda. And how it played a role in our modern era, beginning with Walter Lippman back in the post-Great War period. And then the Marxists, Italians, and Germans started studying Lippman vs Dewey... and... Well, we know how that turned out.

The best thing anyone can do, and I cannot convince my wife of this, is to turn off the boob tube, tune out of the podcasts, and put your radio on a MUSIC or SPORTS station. Get away from the propaganda that dominates ALL news media. After a long detox, start reading mainstream news. Avoid the ends of the spectrum.

In other news, I'm off to play games today.

Stick with music unless you can listen to a live ball game. Sports talk radio is as bad as politics. Some know next to nothing, and others just make it up as they go along!

We need a train or gaming radio station.

Working on Birdie's Place, a 1935 "gathering place", putting pool tables and a player seen thru the front windows.
6 1st floor.jpg

The figure inside the door was found on the floor missing hid head and right hand. Assume he fell off the layout.
I rolled up some glue into a ball and stuck it on his shoulders and glued a flat toothpick to the end of the arm as a pool stick.
7 2nd floor inside.jpg

The second floor makes the first floor dark and when the roof is added, only the view thru the window will reflect on the furniture.
The glue will dry and it will too dark to see much.
The work bench, trash barrel and junk pile as positioned for a test fit. A lean-to roof will be added'
How do you like my scratch built crosscut saws? I found a broken scroll saw blade to attach wood handles.

Afternoon All,

This morning I drove down to see some MRR buddies in Orlando and we all had a great time. After getting home I vacuumed upstairs and changed the bed. I was tempted to lay down for a nap, but I knew it would keep me awake tonight. I'm not sure what's on the agenda tomorrow. I think the fencing that I ordered will be in tomorrow (UPS).

Willie- Nice start to the fencing project.

Mikey- Very nice job on the benches.

I hope everyone has a good night.

Afternoon all,

Managed to get the old blades off the riding mower. Used an air impact wrench I got 20 years ago. I tried to get it to work when I first got it as part of a package that included airhose and the compressor. I couldn't budge those bolts off for nothing. Used some lube that was supposed to help, but didn't help. Had the torch, but there was too much buildup under the deck, so I took about 40 minutes to play with the never used impact and had those bolts loose in under 3 minutes. Don't know how I never got it to work previously.

Lawn mowed with the repaired rider, temp was 104° at the time. Finished up the trimming and cleanup this morning. Currently a warm 88° and sunny, high of 92° expected.

Not a lot else going on as it is laundry day. That's almost done. Just been trying to stay a bit cooler as I nearly overdid the heat yesterday.

Good evening. It's cloudy and 90.
I watched a tree crew remove a tree directly behind where I live that was struck by lightning a few days ago. They got it done successfully, but managed to leave a mess on the lawn. Luckily, it's not my lawn, and I don't have to deal with it.

As a news photographer that covered sports for over a decade, I know the mechanics of each game.

The only sport I enjoy watching is Hockey, and only in person.

And Billiards.

Everything else is sportball.

I know a lot more about politics, and watch it with interest just to see how we're gonna get screwed over this cycle. ;)
