Did you just sneak math into the coffee shop?

Did you even bring in donuts? I mean if you're going to drip MATH all over the place... Donuts woulda helped.:p

Not to pop your enthusiasm for Trig.... But every time I run into any equations beyond how to slice a pie so I get a piece, my eyes glaze over. I find myself knotting the corners of a handkerchief, grabbing my fair island sweater vest and suspenders, a pair of Wellies, and begin mumbling about how my brain hurts.
Math, especially the uncommon core stuff, is like: You have two apples, your friend has two bananas, how many pancakes will fit on the roof?

If only I knew enough Trig to figure out if MY Friends Beer can win again or not. That would be a game changer for me. My wife and I go to Saratoga horse races. The guy next to us said, I can't seem to calculate all these number correctly. He looked like he was retired. I said and what did you do for a living before retiring. He said, I was a high school principal. I said, OK that explains it.

Evening all,

Got the garden gate fixed at the son's house. Should keep the dog from squeezing the gate open at the bottom. A simple cane bolt with it's guides fastened to the gate and then a 3/4" piece of galvanized pipe 12" long hammered into the ground gives the bolt security at the bottom.

Got a call from the boss for a network problem, so the week already started.

Then went out and dumped 6 cubic ft of cotton burr compost, 6 cubic ft of cheap topsoil and 2 bags of cow manure compost , worked it in with my mini-tiller and got the first of the garden planted. 5 tomatoes and 6 pepper plants. I thought I had bought an "Early Girl", "Celebrity" , and a "Better Boy", but turns out the "Celebrity" is a "Yellow Pear" variety, and the boy bought me another "Better Boy" as I had forgotten what I had. The neighbor started too many seeds and gave me a "Jelly Bean" variety along with a couple of bell peppers. Her seeded ones are much smaller and hopefully will survive. Still have 2/3rds of my space left. Soil very dry, and seems to be hydrophobic. Keep going out and adding water to the garden spot. We're supposed to get rain this week, but now the weather models are showing it staying in Oklahoma. Getting tired of cloudy, gloomy and no rain days.

Now that I used a big scientific word, I'll leave you for tonight...

The other day, someone here in the Coffee Shop brought up castles and suits of armor. I found one for sale just 45 miles away from me.

That's a lake out front; the road is on the upper left. The tennis court has a basketball half court at one end.
It's just $7,850,000 and sits on just over an acre and a half. The suits of armor are in the "theater room".

If you're interested, here is the listing along with 50 pictures:

Check out picture # 31, among others. This home is within walking biking distance of both Terry Bradshaw and Pat Summerall, in Southlake TX.
There's also nearly a dozen ex-Dallas Cowboys living nearby.

Good evening y'all. 58° and clear. It cleared up this morning, shortly after my post, and warmed up to 68°. We had 1.75" of rain overnight. Amazing how dry the yard looked around 4PM this afternoon. Everything must have run off.

Hired a new lawn maintenance guy this evening. He's supposed to come over and cut the lawn on Monday. We will see if he's worth $ 38.00 / week.

Seems rather small of me to quibble over $38 (+ tax), per week, when I could spend $7,850,000.00 on that castle. I don't think I could afford the light bill let alone the propety taxes and a mortgage on that spread. Maybe in the next life. ;)

The trig equation for determining grade reminds me of my attempting to comprehend concepts like a arc-sin, arc-cos or arc-tan. I also recall Engineers at wreck scenes, trying to shift blame from their bad track to either Mechanical or Transportation. They would drop terms like tangent , spiral and co-efficient, as well as arc-sin and sin. to dazzle the Superintendent, (a Conductor, by trade), while I argued that given the absence of sufficient ties capable of holding spikes, confirms that the train dropped inside the gauge, and derailed due to deteriorated ties, without resorting to math. I did, however, wish I had spent more time learning HS math. (Would have helped in my Economics classes in college also).

Wow, since dinner, I have stiffened up quite a bit, I have about an hour, before my last dose of Arthritis strength Tylenol. It did get chilly after sun set. Wife and I agree, we need to resume walking. Cardiac rehab resumes tomorrow.

Thank you Louis, for the Birds update. It's hard to follow them from a distance.

Frank Holder photo of C&D RB-1 Eastbound at Lakevood Block Limit and (Crossing HWY 88), on 3/14/88. with a light snow falling. #752 is actually a GP10, painted to resemble CNJ's post B&O scheme, (Coast Guard). Switch in the foreground leads to the runaround track, and the team track. Neither Conrail, nor its handlers, was willing to spend enough to bring the line up to 25 MPH, nor did they want to develop any new business. The parent Delaware & Raritan sees a lot of potential and is planning to reopen the Southern below Lakehurst, which has not seen a train in 25 years or so.

Sometimes being old is just painful!
My daughter had her carpet replaced last week and I grabbed some of the used carpet to use on the basement stairs and attic stairs.
Yesterday, I measured several pieces and found two pieces to cut for both landings. Cardboard on the basement concrete floor, large carpet piece and a foam pad still felt like bare knees on the floor. Measuring, cutting and nailing down those two pieces of carpet was all I could manage to do for one day.
Being a glutton for punishment, I measured and cut 42" x 11" strips for 15 of the steps. I will nail those pieces in tomorrow and try to let my knees heal for a few days before I cut the other 12 step carpets.
Then, maybe I can get back to working on the layout.
Mikey, you did good.

The sad news is it gets worse.

On the bright side, every day you get up is a good day.

Well done my friend!

Thank you Louis, for the Birds update. It's hard to follow them from a distance.
I thought you would appreciate that.

I have MLB.TV and I can't watch the birds or the nationals! What I do is listen on the radio and follow the stats on MLB.TV

You can also follow the game on MLB.com

I could tell from listening to the pitch calls and the count, Grayson struggled with his command from the first inning. His 98+ fastball, devastating change up and Orioles defense bailed him out.

In the third inning the Orioles radio broadcast team said, "Grayson is beginning to struggle with his command" They are not the best.

"My Friends Beer".........second
"Cabbage" by a head......to win
and "Bubble Gum".........sticking to the rail....third
And "Fruit of the Loom" bringing up the rear.

John I rather you calculate the forces of the cars pushing down on each other when descending the grade. That's the problem I had with a 3% grade. Cars derailing going down the grade. I thought about having a helper engine on the rear as a brake but realized the better option would be to lower the grade to 1.5 percent.

Newtons third law of "action & reaction".

BRUETTE-You are correct, it did get worse.
I got up for one of my early morning strolls and my knees are groaning so loud I cannot get back to sleep.
I think I will see if we have any horse linament to rub on my knees and maybe a couple Aleve.
What a wonderful start on a Monday!
Mikey: Knee pads. Might not help those groaning knees but if you plan on working on your knees - I swear by them and have multiple sets in different parts of the house/Train Cave. Harbor Freight has them of which I think I paid something like $14 last time bought. They have rubber/elastic straps that make it easy to get on/off; usually takes about 10 seconds to get them on, faster getting them off. I used to grab any object to help me get all that way down so I would hit the ground with knees very slow. Now I just plop down on the cushions and I can crawl around on them instead of getting back up and moving.

I posted this in the EMD TR5A build thread. It probably belongs here....I guess. Maybe under layout builds/design.........oh well.

In regards to "percent of grade".
Most may know this but this info is for those that do not.
Lets start with a 2% slope. Correctly shown as 2.00%. Now, move the decimal point to the left 2 digits. Now we have 0.02000.
0.0200 is now the tangent of an angle .
Most handheld calculators have Sin Cos Tan functions. Most also have a button to achieve the inverse functions usually referred to as arc-sin, arc-cos and arc-tan.
Back to our 0.02000 number. Enter this number in your calculator do the arc tan function and you should now have 1.1458. This is the angle in decimal form as 1.1458 degrees which equates to 1 degree, 8 minutes and 45 seconds.
This angle may be a bit hard to set up on your layout so lets do something else.
That tangent number, 0.02000 is the tool to use for figuring the slope dimensions on your layout.
Take 0.0200 and multiply by 12 (number of inches in a foot) and we get 0.2400.
12 inches represents the base of a right triangle (horizontal length) times the tangent gives the rise, the 0.2400 number. 0.2400 equates to 3.84 sixteenths of an inch. You can round this up to 1/4 (4/16ths) inch rise in 12 inches of horizontal length. But using this rounded up number will accumulate as you add more 12 inch lengths. So........
For more accuracy lets take an even rise number like 1 inch. To achieve 1 inch rise at 2% slope you need 50 inches of horizontal length.
So now 12 1/2 inches gives us 1/4 inch of rise exactly ; 25 inches gives us 1/2 inch rise ; 37 1/2 inches gives us 3/4 inch rise.
To sum up: 1% slope use .01000 as a tangent
1.5% slope use .01500 as a tangent and so on.

If you have a sloping section on your layout and you want to know the percent of slope (grade) of that section of track, then set up a level, lets say a 3 foot level. Set one end of the level on the high end of the track (roadbed, etc) and while keeping it level, measure the distance between the top of the track (roadbed etc) to the bottom of the level. Lets say you measured 3/8 of an inch.
Now 3/8 of an inch equates to .375 decimal and your 3 foot level converts to 36.00 inches. (we have converted all numbers to decimal inches)
Dividing .375 by 36 will give you 0.0104. That 0.0104 number is the tangent of the angle so move the decimal point 2 digits to the right and now you have 1.04. This is 1.04 % of grade. Not bad.

I hope this helps and is not confusilating to you. It is just trigonometry. o_O🥱
There may be a better way but this is what I use.

Take care....John
My head is still spinning 12 hours later!!!

Good morning all. A day to put the heating back on as the temperature hovers around zero C.
Dawn is busy preparing a few things for the Coronation. I am not looking forward to it. Though I am a Royalist I would prefer Prince William to be King now.

My younger granddaughter wanted lights on the layout. After placing them on the layout it was, "Switch the room light off, Papa."
She then switched the layout lights on.
