House update:

We were trying to pour the concrete for the walls of the main house level the last few days. We had a few odds and ends to attend to still but we thought we had time to do them before the pour times. However, Wed night we got 4" of snow and so we postponed the pour from Thursday to Friday as it took us a lot of time to clean up (instead of doing the lose ends) and there was still some snow inside the walls even after it melted during the day outside. A little snow inside is OK but not too much.

Then Thursday night it snowed again another 4" and Friday the guy whose helping me and running the pour said he was postponing until Saturday as there was now a lot of snow inside the walls and he wanted it to "burn off" and Saturday was supposed to be partly sunny and up in the mid 50s. Saturday came and it was partly sunny and in the mid 50s and indeed the snow inside the walls was gone by midday, but the concrete company had no last minute openings for their Saturday schedule.

I worked Saturday on a bunch of odds and ends that I wanted to get done for the house including penetrations in the walls and adding in small 9=10" blocks of foam at the top of the outer wall of the garage (as that is high enough it is actually part of the bonus space and I want the house part above the garage to have the extra insulation the rest of the house has). I also filled the insulation in on one part of the east wall that hadn't been finished. The guy I've hired worked a bit on stuff in preparation of the pour (but he was alone without his son and he had also left early Friday once the pour was postponed and we passed the inspection).

The problem is that it is raining turning to snow tonight and should snow all day tomorrow and a lot of Tuesday into early Wed for 15-20+ inches of snow. Saturday and today the guy (Saturday) or his son (today) came and tried to cover the tops of the walls with plastic sheeting or foam/wood slabs depending on if the wall has rebar sticking up (parts of the wall are final height and don't have it sticking out). The goal is to avoid the snow going much into the wall. My son and I also closed off the stairs into the basement and covered it with tarps etc to keep snow out of the basement area. It gets enough water from melt and rain as it is and we don't need a foot or more of snow on the stairs and the open stairwell area (54" wide stairs that are open / suspended stairs).

I did 2x 10" penetrations using 10" round steel ducting through the wall so that we can put 9" poly foam ducting through for the Zender ventilation system (exhaust and fresh air input). I still have to do a 5" duct as a penetration for the 4" dryer duct to go through later and I need to put a bunch of 1/2" / 3/4" and 1" PVC through various places to run wiring etc through the walls for outside lights, switches, or whatever. Saves having to core through the concrete later. One place we decided to just core later and that is in the garage where the gas boiler will be for the snowmelt system. The input and exhaust pipes will go to a special combined inlet/exhaust fixture with specific spacing and we decided trying to put penetrations in before the concrete pour was too complicated for how it will be set up. So we'll just core that out with a concrete core drill.

Here are some pics that show the basic complete walls with rebar installed, as well as the 10" penetrations, the 9-10" foam I was gluing in, as well as the walls all plastic sheeted or otherwise with barriers to keep snow out from going inside.

With luck we can dig out and clean up wednesday and finish any last minute little bits and do the actual pour Thursday, which as of now, the weather guessers are saying will be sunny and mid 40s...

Good morning all. A cold, frosty morning here in the U.K..
Grandchildren are on school holidays, so they will be visiting. That means there will be a full train service operation.

Morning all,

Busy weekend for sure.

I was off Friday as I had to work on Saturday. Trip to see mom was canceled as 2 of my sisters were there and too many visitors confuses her. So we went on a road trip anyway and went to Culver's in Webb City, Missouri. We drove back again on Rt. 66 and took a different way home. Winds were bad on Friday, such that, a nearby town called for evacuations due to smoke and fast moving fire. Wind speeds of 55 mph were in the area. One house and a couple of outbuilding were burned and an area 2 miles by 5 miles was burned. No one killed or injured. They are expecting the same again for tomorrow.

Saturday, I did the server updates and a couple of other issues at work, then the wife needed to get stuff for the grandkids Easter Baskets. Yesterday we went to celebrate the Middle granddaughter's 10th birthday. Today is really her big day, but she's at her dad's house this year. It was a nice day to be out with family. Still have yard work and painting to do. Like Guy, wife wants to get the house painted, so it's on me. I noticed we have some siding that need replaced as well. Another job I hate doing, but it has to be done.

Evening folks.
Just before bed, I read TomO's query regarding the Quaking Aspen.
Around here this tree is very common, and is known as the Trembling Aspen. It's the same tree, though; so called Quaking or Trembling due to the sound it makes when wind rustles it's leaves.

After reading Tom's post, I quickly looked through my file of local forest photo's to see if I'd caught some in a frame. For Tom, here are a couple of photos that show the shape of Trembling Aspens.

In this first photo, there are a stand of Trembling Aspens to the right:

Here's a winter photo that I just captured this very morning. All of the deciduous trees in this photo are Trembling Aspen. The winter photo gives a good idea of the way they shape, and proves there can be variety in branch structure. The branched example is also a Trembling Aspen.
View attachment 165883If I were to paint the pale green colour of Aspen bark, I'd probably lighten up some Tamiya XF21 Sky. I'm betting that would be fairly close to the colour of Aspen bark, which is notably more green than the white of Birch.

Hope this helps you out a-bit, Tom. Goodnight!
yes, yes. Thank you Guy. This helps greatly. The snow pictures help tremendously as it shows me the branch structure for the canopy.

I just can’t seem to get my head around the fact the trunk is so thin and tall before the canopy branches really start forming.

thanks again

Good morning all. I have a tech question. Sometimes when I play a U-tube video I get a total green screen like when I played Curts video on Wed. Christians video flashed green on and off as did James video earlier. I'm running Win 10 and using the browser it came with? Edge? Anybody else have this happen? Not all u-tube, just some..
Thanks, Dave in PV
DAVE - I never have seen an answer to your problem. Are you on cable, satellite, or smoke signals?
Being techo ignorant, I cannot offer help, but I'd be tempted to try google chrome for a browser?
Like I said - I'm little to no help!
