New Indoor N Scale

I always think it's not a bad idea with industries to have a "giver" and a "receiver", even if they are only separated by a scene block, gives the rest of the layout to run the train around (several times if wished), between them.

I agree completely. It seems pointless to have an industry if what that industry provides has no where to go.

I like it better. The previous version seemed to be almost solid track.

My thoughts exactly, in fact, when I first saw it I wondered where any scenery would fit. This version gives me more real estate to work with scenery wise. I think it is very close to getting there.

I don't agree. That is the function of the yard. In real life cargo seldom goes directly from shipper to receiver. Generally it goes from the shipper to at least one yard, (normally to another regional yard, then another, and another, etc) and then finally to the receiver.

Having diverse and unrelated industries on a model railroad gives a reason for having more different types of freight cars on the layout and in the trains. It is a reason to have a yard, a reason to have trains go to and from the yards, and more destinations for a local train to go to. If one only has a single shipper and associated receiver, one might as well have only the single train, and only a single track that goes between the two.

This is true , although to do it this way and to do op sessions the layout would have to be extremely large to accomadate so many yards along the way , this is the reason for staging , so that cars are staged in one train length and by shuffling the op session cards gives the operator a challenge to drop off a car and at the same time pick one up for another destination empty or not. This is my opinion of course and I may be wrong.

In Tony's layout case, there are 3 yards, 2 industry and 1 for a station/interchange? About as much as you could get operationally on the layout's size.

That would be my opinion as well :-) In this case from the three industries to the on-layout yard, then into trains. Around the loop indeterminate number of times and back to the yard pretending they are different (the equivalent of shuffling the cards).

Just a quick update or non update if you will ... am still playing with the track plan or more to the point tweaking it and should have another option in a day or so.

Lynn, you have a good point there. Trying to get everything you want without having any scenery can be quite a challenge. Looking forward to see what Tony comes up with.

Tony I would go with that in a heart beat.I think it has just enough of everything to keep you entertained for a long time.

Tony, I agree with you and John. The final plan really gives you a lot in a small space with a lot of options for operation. I say GO WITH IT.

Tony happy new year mate!

Sorry for coming late to this party! It looks like a very interesting plant with lots of well placed stuff going on!!! The only thing i would consider adding (if it was me and if space is available) is possibly some staging tracks. I am really looking forward to its progress and thank you for posting!

Hey Guys,

Okay so here is the final plan, well actually it is the last one I posted. I was looking at leaving out the cross over but a few things were explained to me that has changed my mind about that idea.

So as said, this is what I am going with, at least in so far as the Main Line is concerned - the yard and industrial spurs I will play by ear as I put things together. Speaking of which, the build will be in three stages as follows:

1. The Double Main Line,
2. The Yard then,
3. The Industrial Spurs.

Naturally I will have the turnouts in place for #2 and #3 to be done :)

All I need now is some decent weather and a way to keep my other half out of the room for a day or two while I remove the HO layout ....

I think it is a good plan Tony , it has lots of opportunities to do different things and as you build it and see it forming before your eyes you can always tweek things a bit if need be . This will be a nice build to watch.

Thanks guys and I am looking forward to getting the plans etc and getting this started as well. Am starting to go through train withdrawal!

Hey All,

I am rekindling this thread as it does apply to my intentions - my new N Scale to replace my HO layout. A few things have changed since my last post, not the least my wife moving out of MY room into one of her own; thereby, giving me more space to play with.

The area I now have available to me is a "U" Shape. Basically I have gained an additional 72" X 40" at the right hand end of the room. A picture says a 1000 words so this is now what I can use:

The question was asked whether or not I was going to continue with the plan I had designed for me OR, if I was going to start afresh. At this point both those options are still being considered; however, I think due to the change in the size of the area a brand new plan might be easier.

So, my first (of no doubt many) question is what you guys think, do you think the last plan I posted here can be modified for this space OR should I start again from scratch? Keep in mind that I can now increase the maximum radius from 15" to a minimum of 18" for the tightest curve, as well as having the "extra bit" of space.

Look forward to your thoughts, opinions and ideas as always.

This was something I was thinking about, although, I think there maybe some problems with it
That looks more like the first n-scale layout you did in the shed - garage - out building.

I really like the dual loops that is not all double track - but rather looks like an alternate route. I also like the connection between the two "towns" that could be pretended to be interchanges between different railroads. An interchange track is the most flexible "industry" to have because it can take any sort of freight car.
