Sandy: It would take a very large helium balloon to lift a child. I watched an experiment once to see how many carnival balloons it would take to lift a very small 6 year old girl. The final count was around 5 or 6 thousand! And that only lifted her three or four feet off the ground. Now there was a case (true) of a man taking flight in a lawn chair while held aloft by by a bunch of weather balloons, but even at that it took a LOT of them.

I see the balloon story in my email and it looks like it's barely big enough to carry a small adult. Who would leave something like that unattended?

Same kinda person that leaves a two year old in a house with a 8' python! "IDIOT's........the world is full of them!"

How's the foot jeff?

Down here we have another name for them. It starts with 'R' and ends with 'K' and has 'DN' in the middle. Jeff Foxworthy made a fortune talking about them.

Evening, everyone.

Been busy with all kinds of family things so haven't had any time to get to Flo's. Looks like evryone is having a good time.

Sandy, that ballon story stinks. First, I would have assumed the kid was in the house somewhere. I've worked with Larimar County on training execises and they have a really good SAR team. I'm sure that house was well searched and they would have found the kid in the attic within an hour. Second, that familly has appeared on TV twice in "Wife Swap" and the father is a whack job who is trying to sell that balloon for commuters, believe it or not. He also believes tornados create their own magnetic fields and claims to have a flown a plane through Hurricane Wilma. He looked like he was high on something when he was interviewed on TV. The mother claims the kid just wandered down from the attic himself - he wasn't found by searchers. There's no doubt in my mind this was a publicity stunt and there will be some criminal charges filed.

Rex, that is an unbelievably large Eastern Diamondback. I'm sure glad I didn't run across him. He must have had plenty of rats to eat.

Bob, glad to see you made it into port mostly safe and sound. What a deal, a $500 houseboat and the wife brings you free canned goods on top of it. :) I sent you an e-mail about the zip file. If you still have problems let me know and I'll re-zip it and send it to you. He has some amazing things in his collection.

Chris, you've designed a great logo. Both the wife and daughter think it's cute so I think you've got a winner. One change though, clean ups does not have an apostrophe. There are a ton of weird and dangerous creatures in Florida, some with no legs, some two legs, and some with four legs. I must say that Miami was the only city I've been in that I thought I really needed to carry a gun.

Jeffrey, hope the foot is doing well.

Ken, Sorry to hear about your aunt. Sounds like she must have been a really nice person. :( Talk to Rex about blocking up trains in yards. He's the master. In the operating session we had at his place, all the trains were in the right place and the manifest were all right, even when I didn't read them quite correctly.

I missed a whole bunch of people so please forgive me. I hope everyone is doing as well as can be expected.

It's been cloudy with off and rain for the last several days. Ocotber is normally our driest month and we've had over three inches already. I see Barry is getting paid back for stealing all our rain earlier with snow showers tonight. :D The tropics are quiet but it looks like we have a chance for some tropical storm formation in the Caribbean starting around the 25th. Since we leave on our Caribbean cruise on November 1st, that should be just about right to keep my record of screwed up vacations intact.

I could have used that Info 24 hours ago:( where were you:mad:......:) Your the first person out of many(and I do mean many!) that found the Error with the Apostrophe, thank God there is very few highly educated people in flori-duh able to spot it though!:D:rolleyes: A soon as I get my magnetic signs and plant them on the truck, I'll post a pic! Yes, Miami is dangerious in some areas:mad: but like every were else You got good areas and areas that you need to stay out of!

Well I got to go pick up my last pay check to day! as soon as it clears I should be ordering my new ZTR mower.......Hope to have it next Friday if one isn't in stock! I heard word on the grape vine that my layoff might show up in the local news paper:confused::o I think it has something to do with the way it was done. we'll see:rolleyes:

Sandy, I would assume that our WILD life here will keep you from visiting Flori-duh in the future!;):)

As for ballon Boy, That Father and Mother is your typical, Pot Head Parents(PHP's)! It's the same story with the 2 year old that was killed by the mom's boy friends pet python http://www.myfoxtampabay.com/dpp/news/local/nature_coast/sumter_snake_kills_child_070109 ! If you know of the story, the Mom's Boyfriend was arrested week after the girls death for dealing in drugs!:rolleyes: Like I said, "PHP's!" BTW: Both parents are in jail for child endangerment!!!! My poor Wife deals with these PHP's all day, dang near every day!

We got rain finally comming! Should make tomarrows mowing a little less dustier!

Party, November 1st @ Jims! BYOB!!!!!!

Morning All...

Jim...I was glad the little guy was found safe...until I heard the father speak. Now...I think it was probably a hoax of some sort. You'd EXPECT a story like this out of Boulder...but not Ft Collins :D It was a cool sight; that balloon flying along with the Rockies as a backdrop.

Chris...I think Florida is lovely. I had a brother who was stationed at Eglin and one at Homestead and I just thought it was beautiful when we visited.
There were a TON of jellyfish out and about at the beach one Thanksgiving. We don't have them here ;)

Bob...what an interesting way to go grocery shopping! Would love to be following a truck carrying Kruggerands... :)

Hope everyone has a lovely day!. Was 17 degrees last Saturday and will be almost 80 THIS Saturday. Must be Colorado!

Sandy

Good Morning--

We have a bunch of that thar 'white stuff' be stickin' to our roofs and cars and a bit stuck on the sportsfield behind us--current temperature be sittin' at the mighty goose egg and will go up to 7C today. We'll see more sun for the next few days---and see our highs back to 13C by Monday.

Jim Don't get too comfortable down there:D:D---the GWN may send surprises yet:eek:;);):D:D--BTW--interesting points raised in the other thread. Although I'm still not so sure that the average wage was so much---$20/hr for plant floor--in this hobby sector?:)

Chris PHP's?? In my field we see these too. Not good:eek::mad:

Got my usual evening classes tonight and the weekend seminar things to do--might get on/might not----have a good one:D:D

Had a productive day today! 1st Picked up my last pay check, Uncle O took $1500 out of the $5700 I had comming! I ran in to my old PO and another PO from Engle park that got layed off too. We had a good talk and laugh at the whole thing. I told them how the news paper is going to do a story on us:)! The ladies in personel giving out our last check couldn't be ruder!:mad: Them W-itchs!!! Any ways 2nd.................I got my new mower:D It's sweet now I can get in those 32" gate opening:D:D Thank God No more walk mowing:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D Tomarrow we got 6 yards to mow! we should get done in short order!:)

Sandy, Florida is real nice! I love the cow country we have running down the middle of the state it so clean and green! I wish I could afford to move out there:( Sandy If you had jellyfish where you live I would, "MOVE the hell out of there!":D;)

Terry, which 10% are we talking about:confused:LOL's

Afternoon, everyone.

Sandy, the more I read and hear about the baloon boy, the more convinved I am that it's a hoax. He actually said to the father on TV that he thought he was supposed hide because "it was part of the show". The parents dragged the poor kid around to all three morning talk shows and he barfed on two of them when asked what he meant by that remark. I don't know how far the sheriff will go in his investigation but there certainly should be an investigation by child protective services, since the other two kids were on the roof of the house taking a video of all this. Those kids are being used as pawns by the parents. I would think the FAA should be interested in the case sine he had no permit to launch balloons and a couple of neighbors said he launches balloons all the time from the back yard. I don't know what kind of drugs the father was on but he's on something, judging by his speech and demeanor that I've seen in interviews.

That 17 degree to 80 degree temperature swing would drive my arthritis nuts. That was actually one of the things I hated about Colorado. It's still better than Cleveland, where it never gets above freezing for months at a time but I prefer a mere sedate temperature range now. The lack of Jellyfish is a plus though. :) Those things really sting if you get caught in a pod of them ( or whatever the right word is for a boatload of Jellyfish).

Chris, sorry I didn't see it earlier but, as you say, the vast majority or people won't notice it anyway. My 19 year old just thought it was the cutest thing she ever saw, especially that pile of turtles in the back. :) Did you do the whole design yourself? If so, maybe that's where your real talent lies. I hope the story about the layoffs does make the paper. People tend to get more cranked off when their parks start looking ratty because the county decided they could get along without you guys. We'll see if it does any good. At least you're able to get your new mower and have some jobs already. I think things will work out fine.

As for Miami, I'm with Terry. It was the only place I've been where I didn't feel safe leaving the car to do some railfanning, especially as I got closer to Homestead. I had the scanner along, listening to both the railroads and the police. I finally had to lock out the police channels because they never stopped. The only place I've ever been where the police radio talked more than LA. BTW, I told you it was going to rain.

Barry, our high was 72, which occured at midnight. It's now 58 with 20 mph winds. Your cold air even made it down here. Well, I know not as cold as what you have, but pretty danged cold for us. I actually had to hunt up my jacket today. :D As for the wage situation and Athearn, it's not the hourly wage that kills manufacturing here, it's the taxes and benefits. A person making $20 an hour actually cost a company about $35 an hour if you count SS taxes, unemployment taxes, state taxes, and the cost of a health plan, paid holidays, vacation, and sick days. That doesn't even take into account the grief from OSHA and various state labor agencies...and unions knocking on your door. The average Chinese worker makes a little more than $3 an hour. Kind of a no-brainer if you want to produce model trains. I agree that there are cultural and quality problems sending production offshore. The Chinese wallboard problem, primarily in Florida, is a good example. Still, all that can be dealt with by your lawyers and your insurance company. Your bottom line still looks a lot better.

As I said, it's cool, cloudy, and windy down here, quite a change from the last week of warm, humid weather. The tropics remain quiet...too quiet. Something has to give. We should warm up again next week. If I'm lucky, maybe I'll get in some layout time tonight. Hard to do with visitors here that want to be entertained.

Yes, I did the layout. Back in my high skool years I had 3 years Commercial Arts and 3 years of Drafting! that was back before CAD drafing came into play. My son Loves turtles and frogs, that's my juice for the Idea:) And who hates cartoon?;):D

As for the news story, I hope they do it right and really investigate it to the bone! If they really dig I'm sure it will cheeze people off.

BTW: I forgot to mention got 3 more accounts this week! I just got off the phone with one! woooooooot........Keep'um comming!

Jim...would that be a "jar" of jellyfish? :D I guess because I have lived in Colorado most of my life, I am used to the temp fluxuations. I kind of enjoy knowing that even thought it is freezing right now...it could be 75 tomorrow. Ahhhhhhh......And I never could get used to the southern humidity...it just sapped my energy. I guess all those years in an arid climate spoiled me.

Chris...forgot to mention that your business designs are perfect. Very eye-catching; bright and colorful. Great job! And congrats on the new accounts. Your old job will soon be a fading memory. Good luck!!

Have a great weekend!

Sandy

I spent a year in Cheyenne, WY., and I hated the weather so much I went back to NEW ENGLAND!!!! Now you know it was bad if I preferred a New England winter to it! I remember one night when the wind chill was -72 degrees out there!

Long time no see fellas.

Chris: Congrats on the contracts coming in. New mower sounds like a lot of fun. Great design also.

Bob: don't have too much fun with the boat. Sounds like you guys had a good time.

I spent all day yesterday under my car working on the fuel pump. All that was holding me back was a locknut that I could not get on there. I tried for an hour today too. Family friend came over when I was at work and had it all done in 5 minutes. Finished up the fuel and electrical connections, filled her up, and it started no problem. Only thing now is I am failing emissions on my scan tool. But no codes popped up. So Sunday I go back under the hood.

I moved out a week ago, in with my sister and brother-in-law now. Wednesday or Thursday morning, something wasn't draining right in the workshop. Needless to say, it flooded. This included the train room. Luckily most things were on tables, but a few boxes and some minor non train stuff got ruined.

Off to sleep, work has me in early tomorrow. At least it is money I can spend on train stuff!

Chris, that is a really great sign layout and very eye-catching. Maybe you can explore doing custom logos and signs as part of your business. Glad to hear you are getting more contracts. I'm sure you'll be able to hustle up more now that you have full time to devote to the business.

Sandy, I lived in a pretty arid climate in California but we didn't have those wild temperature swings. The humidity here can get bad sometimes but I've been in Boulder during monsoon season and it's much worse there than it is here most of the time. When you combine the heat in summer with the temperature gyrations in other seasons, plus the occasional blizzard and tornados drifting over from Weld County, that's more than enough variety for me, thanks. :)

Phillip, people go down to Denver to warm up in the Winter. Wyoming in the winter can be absolutely brutal, especially in places like Rock Spring. I spent two weeks there on a job in February and ended up getting frost bite on my nose just from walking to the car from hotel. The wind never stops blowing, so it ranges from uncomfortable to downright dangerous in the winter. I'd move back to Cleveland before ever moving to Wyoming, and you know how much I like Cleveland. :D

Dan, good to see you're still around and working. Amazing how another set of eyes can see a solution that you can't. Sorry about the flood but it sounds like no major damage was done.

Still cool and brezy here. The high was a rip-roaring 57 and it's only down to 50 now because of the wind and cloud cover. Looks like tomorrow night and Monday night we may get our first frost but it should warm up nicely as we get a return flow from the Gulf by Tuesday. That means another round of showers and thunderstorms Thursday and Friday. Nothing too bad looking right now, but, from Novemeber to February is our seconday severe weather season. Depending on how much cold air Barry sends our way, things can change fast.

I'm getting ready to mow, and the air is dryer and cooler (57*lows-74*high) today:D The second cool front has finaly rolled through......Ahhhhhhhhhh! But it will be short lived, Going to get warm again for Trick-or-Treating:( I hate October down here the weather is crazy. Well got to get the equipment loaded and fueled!............Have a good day.:D
