I MU'd an MP15AC and an SW1500 tonight for the first time and the combination ran well. I can't for the life of me figure out how to MU them cab to cab, e.g. , one running forwards and one running backwards. I'm using a Digitrax DSC 50. If anyone has some helpful hints, I'd be most grateful.
It's easy, you just have to ignore how Digitrax tells you to do it...
1-- Place the engine you want to lead the consist on the track, enter the unit number, and make sure the controls are set to "forward", no matter how the unit is oriented.
2--Do the same with the second unit, facing the opposite direction (make sure it is also set to "forward", no matter which direction it is facing).
3-- Enter the unit number of the first unit back into the DCS50. Change direction of that unit to "reverse".
4--Hit "MU'
5--enter the number of the trailing unit.
6-- Hit "+"
The DCS 50 will show the number of the lead unit, and both engines will run in the same direction as the lead unit.

I've assembled 10 unit consists in about 3 minutes that way, you just have to remember to place the reverse lever in the direction whatever the unit you are trying to MU is facing. "Forward" if it's facing the same direction a the lead unit, "reverse" if it's facing away.

Chris Mowers that run on natural gas? From what I understand, that could be right up your alley! If you could harness the methane from your DMSFs, you could run the mower for free!!! Or you could just eat a dozen tacos before mowing!!

I know a guy that know's a Guy that Know's a woman that's a wife of a Guy that tried that! He lost tons of accounts! The customers didn't like the looks of him refueling his mowers in front of their house! also He nearly killed himself, cause he was smoking during the refueling! No thanks, I continue to burn Gasoline!

Chris, I tried using methane in one of my cars once. I had to replace the driver's side 8 times in one year. Not at all profitable.

Bob

Afternoon, everyone.

Terry, thanks for that info. I knew there had to be a simple step left out by the Digitrax manual and changing the reverse handle was it. I don't know why they can't get people who write as clearly as you to do manuals.

Chris , weight is an issue with natural gas since you need a lot heavier pressure vessel than using unpressurized gasoline. In theory, if natural gas was adopted as the energy solution, you could just stop by a service station and fill up, but we don't have that kind of infrastructure available and never will unless we get some kind of agreement on a national energy policy.

Barry, natural gas would have a significant price advantage over gasoline once the infrastructure costs were paid off. Right now, we (meaning Canada and the US) are way under producing capacity because of paucity of demand. Natural gas pricing is primarily based on weather, since a cold winter drives up demand. A mild winter kills prices and usage always drops in the summer since only industrial demand remains if home heating isn't needed. By having all vehicles use natural gas as fuel, we can even out the supply/demand curve and producers will have a more reliable way to produce at a profit. A huge advantage for natural gas in vehicles, aside form the pollution reduction and overseas supply issues, is that engines last longer and stay cleaner compared to gasoline. All our patrol cars were natural gas fueled. We found that they lasted about 25,000 miles longer with the same repair costs per mile compared to gasoline. Since NG doesn't have the same energy potential as gasoline, it dropped our top speed in a Crown Vic from about 115 mph to 110 mph but, going any faster is really useless, since a car you can't catch at 110 is unlikely to be caught at 115. Now, if we all drove Ferrari's, that would be a different story, but I doubt the public wants us in 140 mph pursuits. Radios, helicopters, and spike strips work a lot better than playing NASCAR on the freeway. :)

Hybrid cars are a disaster. As you say, not only are the batteries expensive, but they use up tons of carbon to produce. They contain about 15 toxic chemicals, with lead being the worst. The batteries are all being made overseas, primarily in South Korea, because no North American company wants to take on all the potential future pollution lawsuits. The battery bank weighs far more than a natural gas installation and we have no way to dispose of all the used batteries or recycle them in a non-polluting way. The worst part is we aren't reducing carbon emissions, just transferring them from one source to another. As long as our power plants aren't all run on solar power or windmills, they have to burn more coal to recharge the batteries in hybrids, so the total carbon load from a hybrid is actually worse than a standard gasoline car when you include the battery problem.

Ken, too bad about the coal mismatch but it sounds like you still got something out of going. I just wish we had real trains hows down here more than once a year.

Karl, I know what you'd suggest but the Digitrax has been fine with my dinky layout. If I was starting new, I'd probably be taking a closer look at all the brands, including NCE. Did you notice that the women were way better looking and in better shape than most of the men at the reunion? We went to Dianna's 25th and the men all looked about 10 years older than the women.

Jeffrey, glad to hear the daily fevers are gone. That should be a good sign things are healing without an infection. It is awfully hard to put with being disabled and stuck sitting around the house but you really need to do it until your foot is completely healed. Like I said, I can think of one structure that needs to be built and painted and you can do all that sitting down. ;)

Bob, I'm glad I wasn't around your methane car. The explosive forces must have been quite impressive. :D

Nothing of note happening here, with just partly cloud skies and mild temperatures. I feel sorry for you guys up north with frost on the pumpkin so early. The weather guessers keep saying we are going to get more rain but I can't see from where. Maybe a better chance tomorrow although I can't see it being the 100% chance the current forecast calls for. Regardless, at least I don't have to get out my parka yet. :p

Good Evening--

Got a quiet Thanksgiving on the docket for tomorrow----mmmm---sounds wonderful---especially after a hectic few days there---we even had to 'entertain' a few committee members ---our church be looking to sponser/organize a trainshow for sometime next fall-- ---with me as one of the organizors:eek::eek:

Jim I've a friend who has been monkeying around with NG in his 429 for awhile--the stuff he's done is something to behold!!:):) He's got it stuffed into a late '90's Mustang right now:eek:

Hi gang! My goodness, you stay away from the Coffee Shop for a couple of days and then have to read a book to catch up. Flo, glad business is booming!

I finally got around to installing a QSI Quantum Revolution-U and two QSI High Bass (HB106R) speakers in one of those J1e Hudsons from the BLI grab bag deal. A real PITA having to splice onto the short wires at the locos plug (no harness w/plug). I tried to find a 6 pin female plug that would fit, but no luck. The speakers are mounted in the bottom of the tender where the originals sit and are wired in parallel, i.e more power/better sound. Yes, QSI has given their approval for this and with all QSI decoders.
Evaluation
Decoder/Operation:Well, so far it is an equal match with the Tsunami with many of the same advanced adjustments including PID. The loco is extremely smooth throughout the throttle settings. Sound:The quality is excellent with individual adjustments for all the many sounds. The quality is very good and real like. Only thing missing is the equalizer that the Tsunami has.
High Bass Speakers: Ya'gotta get some! The improvement in the bass is dramatic. You must consider the height of the speaker for your installation: They are ~5/8" high allowing for a larger coil and diaphram movement; quite a bit taller than most commonly used, but WOW!

All considered, the installation was a success. The sounds will blow you out of your socks and I had to back down the volume a good bit. The bass is very much there and will rattle anything loose on the tender...shell included, in fact I need to secure the shell better to keep the vibrations down. I will keep you informed of any plus or minus discoveries.;):)

Nice catch on the signals, but ya lost your coal!

I hope it was because you were messin with Stewie!:D:cool::rolleyes:

Karl, I was only there for ~90 minutes on Saturday; too many Honey Dues on my list including my daughter's soccer game, so I couldn't actually bring and operate any of my trains this time. But when I asked Keith, he told me that Stuart had actually cleaned up his act - ran his trains at normal speeds, no casey-jones-style collisions. So no need for any, umm, "disciplinary action"

Rex - looks like you've been having a ball experimenting with that sound setup. I'd love to be able to coax out that level of bass in one of my 2nd-generation EMD models, but there just isn't enough space inside the shell. That's one of the main reasons I haven't invested in sound for any of my turbocharged models.

Actually it was kinda wierd. True, some of the women had perfect, smooth faces, but I thing that was more due to the extra 100+ pounds some had put on since high school. Some of the girls who stayed skinny were more drawn in the face, some not so much. Heck, every damn one of us had some flaws, but it didn't matter......the jocks...the gearheads...the geeks...and the stoners we all got along just great. It was interesting finding out who has been doing what, and everyone was happy to tell thier own story. Frankly, I can't wait til the next one!

Talking about reunions Glendia's class had their 40th this weekend. We went to the Fri nite social and had a good time. She said that $69 for a country club dinner was a bit much so we avoided the Sat nite thingy. I remembered a few of her classmates especially the ones my brother Mike knew and he did not even come to his class reunion. Oh well he was not missed by most of them just one of his best friends. We gave him a call and he said he FORGOT. Right he told me a month ago he was not going to go.

Rex, subs in a loco? Now I've heard it all. Gotta figger out a way to install a 5000w amplifier in on of those engines now. Then you can compete with the "screw-rattlers" we are so familiar with when they stop next to you at the stoplights.

Glad to here Jeffrey is feelin' better. You can tell he's feeling better, he's bginning to complain about being down. Hang in there, buddy. Down time is heeling time and being diabetic, you need more of that than most.

Reunions, Bah Humbug!!!!! I haven't been to any, nor do I ever intend to go to any. I don't communicate with any of my old classmates. That was a long time ago, and I've moved on since then. I was popular in school, but I don't wish to relive those "glory days".

Goin' on a boat trip tomorrow. Three days up the east side of Michigan. Didn't I just come back from there? Anyway, I bought a repossessed house boat a few weeks ago. It's now ready to be taken up north. Leaving in the morning from Toledo/Maumee, Ohio area back up to Cheboygan. Got the phone call that it was ready this afternoon. Angela will meet me Thursday back up North for ANOTHER long drive back. I have been giving thought to taking a train back to Indiana. Still might, I've got three days to think about it.

This boat is a houseboat, a really nice houseboat. It was repossessed by my ex-wife's bank. She told me about it and asked if I knew anyone interested. She said she thought I should buy it. Funny though, I've been divorced from the ex for 31 years and she still tries to tell me how to spend my money. Anyway, I bid $500, tongue-in-cheek, and they accepted the bid. Now what? Anyway, I shopped around for a transport to MI and was astounded, shell-shocked and dumbfounded by the estimates. So, I decided to have the boat dropped off at my old marina on Lake Erie and I'd take it the rest of the way by water.

At 64-feet long, it will be the 4th biggest boat to be moored at my new marina. They actually have a 92-foot yacht that belongs to some high-roller. Now that boat is BIG!!!! I cruised up next next to that boat in my 32-footer and felt like I was in a canoe.

Anyway, took a nap this afternoon and now am getting the boat ready to take off in the morning seeing I can't sleep now. I went to the gas dock and filled the boat up, talk about "pump shock"!!! OUCH!!! The temp-o-meter outside says it's 36 degrees, with the wind off the lake it seems MUCH cooler. The damp air makes the chill kinda stick to you and goes clear to the bone. Luckily, the boat has a good heater.

I'm going to try to stay close enough to shore that I can use my cell phone to link to the internet. I'm thinking I'll be in port no later than Thursday, but I'm pushing for Wednesday afternoon. I was going to go solo, but my nephew volunteered to first mate. He's helped me before with delivering boats, and it is a good thing for safety's sake.

I just had an odd thought. Ya think I could put a layout on the boat, kind of a "floating" train display? Nah, I'm weird but not that weird.

Well, I'm gonna try to get a little nap before we leave at first light. 'Night, all.

Chris, the BOSS will be home, as well as the dogs. Doubt you get too far with her. I haven't in years.

Just letting the engines warm up before we shove off. Still have internet, so far, but that will change in a bit as we get further from shore. I've programmed the GPS, actually just put in a chip I've used on the Carver before. All of my waypoints and such are all ready on it from my last adventure. Nephew is still sleeping. He'll get up whenever. I don't need him to cast off the lines, actually quite a few people on the dock for a cool October morning. I counted 19 about 5 minutes ago. Most had tackle boxes and fishin' poles in hand. We may drag a line or two ourselves.

Well, time to head out. See y'all whenever I can.

Bob

Bob I think you needed a new toy but for $500 I think I would have splurged also and I don't even like water.

Good morning. It's Monday, the 12th day of October, 2009. It's 64 and cloudy. The high is expected to be in the upper 70's and there's a chance of rain.

I'll be on my way to see the foot doc later today. I anticipate a good report. I woke up with a low blood sugar level (64) but some sausage and potatoes took care of that by raising the level by about 100 points. The sausage doesn't do anything to raise the level but it sure makes the potatoes more palatable. I know there will soon come a day that I can get back to many of my normal activities and I look forward to it. The layout is showing some signs of neglect.

Larry, I never thought that the bank would have accepted a $500 bid, never in my wildest dreams. I looked the boat up online and most, though not in as good of shape, were selling for anywhere between $19-32,000. Most had twice the number of hours on the engines, and not near the creature features. Add to that this boat has two 350HP Crusader engines, where the others had Volvos. These Crusaders are almost bullet proof.

By the way, I am almost 20 miles outside the seawall, traveling at a precarious 19.4mph. One thing I have already noticed about this boat, besides being slow, is that it doesn't turn very well. I thought I was going to have to use the whole marina to get it pointed in the right direction when I pulled away from the dock. But, I believe that was because of the low speed that one travels in the marina. It seems to respond better at higher speeds. The ride is rock solid. Actually very smooth.

Well, gotta get back to navigatin' this barge.

Bob

Good morning folks

It was 48 F with a high of 60 F.

We have had a rough end of the week last week. One of dogs, an 8 year old Pomeranian named Beowulf, suddenly went into kidney failure and had to be put to sleep Thursday afternoon. Everyone in the house took it hard since Beowulf was quite a character. The dog was always happy and bouncy around. My FIL took it real hard since the dog stuck to him like glue. He will be missed greatly.

We spent some of the weekend selling popcorn. My son did a shift on Saturday and then did an extra shift due to a no-show.

We spent yesterday shopping for new dining room chairs. The table has now outlasted two sets of chairs. The table was my MIL and I would guess it is close to 50 years old. We did find the chairs we wanted. We have to pick them up this week and guess who gets to assemble them?

My son has Boy Scouts tonight. We are getting ready for his next camping trip that begins on Friday. It is at Camp Citta which is near Barnegat, NJ.

I hope everybody has a good day.

Bob Those bank auction things are quite something sometimes--the one that Audrey and I threw our hat at was for a 1957 Jaguar XKE 'drophead coupe' that we ended getting for $1200. In mint shape too this thing is---still drive it around every chance we get!!:):) At 64' that houseboat should be able to sleep a fair number of people. Is there a chance you might host a party or two---or three or 4 or---:):). I remember the 65' catamaran that we took down the intercoastal waterway to Pensicola(sp?) FLA. was interesting in the maneuvering dept---one had to think about how far back one started any kind of turn---

Jim When was the earliest time that the police forces started using NG? I know that we had a few up here about 1977 or so--any earlier?

Good Morning--

We are under our usual dullness this morning with another 50% chance of showers this afternoon and evening--we still managed to find an errant t'underin'boomer last night--no one forecast those:rolleyes: The high is supposed to get to 8C while the low will be down to -1C tonight. Another sign that we are going towards that OTHER season--this morning our radio station had warnings about black ice on bridges and overpasses--

I'm going to be doing some cleaning in the trainroom and find tools that are MIA. I actually found that I have 4 Dremels from the last time that I did this room:eek::)

Anyways ---off to get a refill of my coffee ---have a good one people--:):):D

Well, the nephew finally got up and took the helm. I fried up some bacon, eggs, and a few pancakes. Now, I'm trying to teach him a few things about steerin' this boat. I found out it does handle much better at speed. I also went below to check for any water. None found, and that's a good thing.

We ran into a few raindrops from a cloud that passed overhead, nuttin' serious. Still chilly on deck though. We passed a container ship a while back. I couldn't get away from the wheel to get my camera to take a picture. The nephew was still asleep and my bag is clear aft. I forgot my video camera though. Thought sure I packed it, but I guess my "old-timers" kicked in and I forgot to put it in the bag.

So, far a boring trip. I guess I should be thankful for that. Well time for another coffee and maybe a bacon sammich for a snack.

Bob

Bob does the traveling speed alter your guesstimated arrival time at your destination? I jusat saw on WISH 8 weather snow is a fallin in Wis and headed for the norther penn. of Mich. Hope that does not interfere with your schedule.
