Dave's Layout v. 4.0

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

I have a few pics to post, some of my recent projects; first the Sandstone mill, where they cut the rocks for paving, etc.

This building under construction but located in its intended location, previously talked about relocating it but leaning towards putting it where it was originally intended:

then we have some horses

Weather is so nice here I did not get any train work done over the weekend. Getting lawn mowers ready and outside chores. Hope to make more progress on the Sandstone building and also on my new Varney model which I am rebuilding

THANKS for looking!

The weather has been too nice, so all I have to post is projects in the works:

proj loco.jpg

This is my loco project, everything to make a new Varney Casey jones (except the time). I tried out the gear puller, however, and it works to get the drive wheels off the bad axle...

projects 1.jpg

This is my Jib Crane and Truck projects. The crane is for the quarry area which is the scene I am working on at present

projects 3.jpg

This is part of the quarry scene, which also is at a standstill. Think I have pretty much decided the building will go where it was originally intended (as shown) rather than adding more track

also trying to finish a little painting on some feed sacks and the grocer, both get added to some existing scenes

projects 2.jpg

Hopefully, I will have some progress on something in a couple weeks (we are in a drought now so a few rainy days would help!)

Looking good Dave, as always.

Love the cart, the focus is spot on to make this look believable, bliss.

Well I actually made headway over the weekend, we had Monday off so no excuse to not making progress:

groceries.jpg

I made up the scene at the grocery store, painted the grocer also added the sacks and man carrying potatoes, more detailing necessary in the foreground...

feed mill.jpg

At the feed mill I added the feed sacks, added a little dry brushing around the entrance; the feed sacks have been sitting on my workbench for a month...

bird.jpg

Lastly, added crows to the layout. I bought ten but had many problems, they are from Model Tech Studios, LLC. Not happy with them, half the tails fell off (like the one pictured) and were very tiny, I think too small actually for one of the crows here in Minnesota. I was able to mount 8 of them,

Also, got the vents in place on the potato warehouse, used Woodland Scenics Hobby Tack to easily put them in place...

Next project to complete is the Varney Casey Jones.

A few pics of the Varney 4-6-0 "Casey Jones" project that has been sitting in my workshop for a couple months, I was successful at getting the old drivers off the gear that matches my new in the box (1962 unopened package) motor. The wheels that came with the newer locomotive were some type of alloy that kind of fell apart over time. The older drivers (from the 1950's) appear to be a brass alloy and were quite solid, so I did a trade:

assembly.jpg

many of those components are new, however the drivers from an older, well used "junk" model

assembly 2.jpg

here I have all the tiny details with the drivers assembled (above)

loco on tracks.jpg

here she is being tested. Notice one of the pins has not been cleaned up yet, however the loco moved fine back and forth. Another common problem I have noticed with some of these old varnies is the tender base, not sure if the plastic tender shrunk or how did the alloy base warp?

tender details.jpg

this will have to be corrected before I can move forward. I plan on using a crescent wrench to straighten then grind the alloy smaller so it fits into the tender better

tender sprung.jpg

There still is adding some of the details to the loco, like the handrails, bell, and decals. However finally getting this project off the bench and will be moving to one of the other part done things on the layout,

THANKS for looking and for the comments and likes above - Louis, Chris, Gary, Jeff, Airbrush5, dgrafix, Jaz, etc.!!!

I haven’t heard Varney since the 60s…my dad had a few boxes of Varney rolling stock on the shelf when I was a kid
These old models were very well built. Also, the locomotive is very heavy cast metal alloy which gives it superior pulling power. They are often seen on ebay in various states of disrepair, I couldn't believe when this latest one showed up, with many of the parts still in the original wrapping.

Whoever originally purchased it was unable to correctly assemble it, the motor was screwed in at the wrong location. It must have been packed away for decades when the package was found (presumably after someone passed away). I find it interesting that the later editions of this model, though the locomotive casting was improved, the alloy they used for the wheels and tender did not hold up. Still wonder if the plastic tender shrunk or the wheel/tender castings somehow expanded. Two of my junk models displayed the exact same characteristics.

My wife's reaction was she felt sorry for the original purchaser in that there was probably a disappointed child out there who was unable to play with the new train. I hope the Dad (or Mom) was able to purchase an assembled model.

This tender reconstruction part of the project ended up taking lots of time, I realized the old Rivarossi tender I had was the same width just a little shorter than my Varney tender, so I took it apart and decided to use the floor and weight from that one to make a new underside:

tender parts.jpg

The bottom metal cast is the old Varney part. I used it has a template and cut out a piece of cardboard with the bolster screws marked and then used that to lengthern the Rivarossi tender bottom and weight. I cut them with the 4 1/2 " cut off blade on an angle grinder and used WB weld to put it all together:

tender construction.jpg

So, remarkably, this new bottom fit into my old Varney tender, and the trucks are spaced just as in the original. Also, got some of the decals on

loco tender.jpg

I got many of the details on the locomotive, still need to add on the leading truck, the handrails are on also the bell.

Looking forward to wrapping up this project and putting some miles on this locomotive!!!

THANKS for commenting (Sir Robbins) and the Likes!

I finally completed my Varney "Casey Jones" 4-6-2 rebuild that I have been working on since early June. The final assembly led to some issues related to taking some old junk models and making one good one.

IMG_3600.JPG

Making up this locomotive, I had scored on Ebay a junk model which contained a brand new never run engine but wheels and tender bottom which had somehow degraded. So, the wheels and some of the side rods came from a 1955 version.

Models used came from these three different box designs:

IMG_3599.JPG

The red box came as a fully assembled model, that one took some tinkering to get running, but is fully operational and can be seen running in one of my videos posted lately.

Here is a pic of the red boxed model:

IMG_3597.JPG

and the other side:

IMG_3596.JPG

So NP 328 and NP 321 are both models of the S-10 locomotives Northern Pacific purchased in a batch of 10 back around 1901-1910. NP 328 is currently in a railroad museum in St. Paul, and NP 321 was scrapped in the 1940's.

Not sure about my next project to complete, but as I am moving at a snails pace I doubt you will miss anything.

In the meantime, it is running trains: simple fun!

Making some headway on my backed up projects, I got this casting cleaned up some also put down a base coat on this 1914 Stutz. I notice it is a European model, although made in Maine USA:

Stutz project.JPG

I have been having issues with some of my freight cars, this one needed new couplers. They are the KD brand, these are whisker couplers which I prefer, this is the "scale" size. Also, the trucks were attached with some plastic pins and I switched them out with regular metal screws, made all the difference in it's performance:

new coupler.JPG

The trucks on this one were painted kind of a funky gray color (my doing, not sure what I was thinking) so went over it with the brush and the brown paint. Think they will need another coat:

repainted trucks.JPG

lastly, getting around to this barrel rack:

Barrel rack.JPG

And some of my other box cars:

All these road names will be found in my vicinity.
