Supper last night was mostly a "garden" supper, save for the brats. Fried green tomatoes, fried zucchini, corn on the cob.....dessert was fresh cantaloupe.
Ran into a bit of frustration yesterday. One of our freezers decided it was time to quit working. We were rearranging freezers to make room for the food from the contrary freezer. We just got a hog, 1/2 beef and chickens a few days ago and the freezers were near capacity. The meat, along with the frozen beans and such from the garden, just about filled the others to capacity. And we still have corn to do. Hopefully, fixing it will be on the cheap and we can get things back to normal again. Luckily we did cold pack some of the green beans, so we had fewer packages in the freezer this year.
The tomatoes are lagging a bit this year. The lack of hot weather has definitely slowed their growth. But, I must say, the plants are loaded. Now, if they would just ripen.
Squash and zucchinis are doing great!!! Looks like we will have plenty to process for breads, cakes, and cookies. And still have plenty to have for some meals now. I love this time of year. Fresh veggies are the best. Don't worry Jeffrey, Angela has recipes for all of that stuff just suited to diabetics. My Blood Sugar actually runs too low, at times, this time of year. I think it's the tomatoes. They are acidic and that tends to pull the levels down. And I have always loved eating field ripened tomatoes.
I ave an appointment this morning with the Realtor on putting Tom's house on the market. The court hearing is over and I have papers in hand appointing me administrator. Spent a couple of hours at the bank yesterday. I hate bankers, almost as much as I hate lawyers. They were going to charge the estate for some bogus reason, saying they had administrative costs or something. I said fine, I'd just withdraw the funds and deposit them elsewhere. That backed them up a few steps and they "agreed" not to charge anything. Idiots.
I also opened Tom's safe deposit box. He was pretty well set for his retirement. Too bad he didn't live to enjoy it. This is going to be relatively easy, but is going to be quite time consuming until the estate gets closed. I've got to sit down and list all of his assets. Then get back with the lawyer to verify and document his estate and assets. Then we need to work out some of the legalities pertaining to the liquidation of property. Thankfully, I've been down this road before when I was executor of my Dad's estate, so it's not unfamiliar territory.
Tim and Cindy, Tom's children, decided that Tom's trains and truck are to be gifts. WOW!!!! I will be paid for my time from the liquidation of the estate. Trains, truck and money too? I'd take care of the estate for nothing, but they insist. Very kind and generous. I would like to think that if things were different, Tom would do the same for me. I'm sure he would. And he would probably feel the same as I do in the matter. It just feels odd to me taking payment for helping a friend.
Well, I gotta head to the garden and check the corn, see if any beans are lingering. Get some 'maters for lunch and supper, I hope some are ready. Maybe pick a few onions and some kohlrabi for lunch.
