Jeffrey, hope you get that hard drive enclosure you want. It always makes me nervous using a hard drive that's just sitting there naked.
Oh yeah. I found an IDE USB hard drive enclosure today at Radio Shack. Cost me $40. It's got an on/off switch on it so it'll only run when I need it. The hard drive is an old 6 gig junker I salvaged from an old Acer computer years ago. So far I haven't needed anything bigger. It just holds backup data for the main 80 gig drive.

Been a bit busy in here today, FLO.

Great video lraK. If'n you guys would just man up and help me rebuild my layout, we'd be all set, j/k I'd be way too critical and demanding. And you guys would hate me when you left. Besides, if it took 12 years of labor to do it the first time, that means it might take at least 4 years for me to repair, I have at least 4 more years of life. I'll take that.

I have a question 'bout them her-a-canes. First off they are not politically correct. Why do they call them her-a-canes and give them men's names? Shouldn't they be called him-a-canes then?

It be a balmy 16* here at the moment, wind 10-15mph. Damned frigid!!! But, I don't envy those negative temps a bit.

I've found that the engine I've been researching is the product of a mad modeler. Though his name is still a mystery. A buddy, who collects trains and doesn't run them, is going to buy the thing. It will not run on the track, wheels are too far apart and the flanges much too deep. He asked if I would sell it, I asked how much, and he floored me with his offer. I did ask if I could keep it until I retrieved my camera from Ohio. He agreed. So, the check is in the mail. No use of me keeping something I can't run, IMO. Still, I wish I could find out more about it. Besides, I have more stuff than I could ever hope for. Some will have to be sold off, I simply don't have the room. So, keep an eye out, as I will be posting the stuff for sale on the forum before giving eBay a shot. I'd rather some of you get some of your needs filled before handing the stuff to a complete stranger. Though, I do think some of you are stranger than most. lol

Time for the evening feed bag. The granddaughter. Amaya, she's 8(almost nine, she tells me) and the better half be cooking' up some goodies for oral gratification. And it is Angela's birthday today. She's 29(again). That means a sugar-free birthday cake with sugar-free ice cream.

Bob.

The name 'hurricane' has nothing to do with gender. The reason for using women's name originally had something to do with a mans view of a woman's temper. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. I'm fairly sure that the decision to name every other one with a mans name had something to do with equal rights.

Good evening y'all.

Karl, great story! Didn't have time to watch the video though, because I'm about to head over to the E/R at St Agnes. Vicky slipped on the ice and broke her ankle, we don't know the full extent of the damage yet. Do me a favor and tell BillC that I can't make it to the modular knock-down at the VFD tomorrow because I'll either be with Vicky at the hospital or taking care of her at home.

Now back to your regular scheduled programming...

Say Ken, that's an unfortunate insident to happen to poor Vicky. Hope it not too serious
but a break is never fun.

Your post has three similarities that are somewhat unique.

1st There is a Saint Agnes 32 miles South of where I'm at and one the folks have been to on several occasion;

2nd. I had a good friend from the foothill area I live in and his name is Ken too;

3rd. He moved to the Los Altos area near San Francisco and maried a lady named Vicky too.

4th. He also was very involved with HO guage but his interest lay with HOn3.

5th. He taught engineering at State Univerrsity in Fresno, Ca. I'm sure there's no connection but the similarities are interesting.

Hope Vicky heals quickly, you'll have your hands full for awhile I'm sure.

Take care and May God Bless!

Good evening to all,
Well I'm starting my New Year out Right by working on the C & S West Short Line and earlier this late aftrnoon I was able to cut six more sections of sub Roadbed before the Fog/low Clouds rolled in. It was partiallyt covering the hill on the back of the place to the North and looked quite ethearal as the various Oaks and scrub pines dissapeared from sight the farther back & up it got. I was think that would be an interesting thing to do on my layout too.

Hey who left the door open and let the heat out!:mad:

Forcast for tonight/tomarrow morning!
Detail: Hard freeze warning North, freeze warning Central and South. Mid-low 20's north, mid 20's to mid 30's elsewhere.

I want to know who came to florida draging this cold weather with them!

Certainly not I!!!:eek: I had too much work taking our snowblowers and doing our driveway!!:mad:----and we's still getting snowed on!!:eek::mad::rolleyes:

The way this weather's been around here I suspect this snow came from South of us'uns!!!:):p:eek:

Ken, I sure hope it's just a simple fracture. She'll hobble around for a while but she'll be OK if it is. Most slips and falls on ice produce simple fractures. Do let us know how she's doing.

Jeffrey, LOL, I can remember when I got my first hard drive, It was a huge 10 megabytes and I though I could never fill that up. My current laptop has a 400 Gb hard drive that's already half full. It's a conspiracy between hard drive makers and digital camera makers, I tell you.

Karl, that was a great story. Good thing he lives in Amish Country. Building a new barn in a day is no big deal for them. I think it's almost a form of recreation. I think we'd all be better off with some more Amish around. I don't know why, but the idea of Meatloaf and Alice Cooper together at Pebble Beach gives me the dry heaves. :)

Bob, I wonder how the guys who get those professional companies to build layouts for them feel about the end product? I'm sure they build nice stuff, but I know I'd be unhappy about some of the things they'd do and I wouldn't have a feeling for how my own layout was actually built and where the weak spots are. Somehow, I don't think I'd like it. Happy birthday to little Amaya and young Angela. :D

Hurricanes never even had names until 1953. Before that, they were refereed to for a couple of years by the phonetic alphabet (Able, Baker, etc) and before that it was by latitude and longitude. Legend has it that Army air Force meteorologist started to refer to hurricanes by women's names informally to make communications easier. They usually used the first name of popular actresses of the day, in no particular alphabetical order. The Weather Bureau began using women's names in alphabetical order in 1953, with the names chosen at random in a ten year cycle. Particularly bad hurricanes got their names retired and replaced with other names from a secondary list. In 1978, partially giving in to the political pressures of the day, hurricanes are alternately named after women and men. In 1988, Latino names were added, again because of political pressure. The first male hurricane to be "retired" was Andrew, in 1992.

David, I thought it would be neat to have a foothills layout and simulate the fog and low clouds hanging on the hills on the backdrop. Probably could do it with a photographic backdrop but painting the effect would be tough.

Chris, I think Cincy is mad at the Gators and paying you back with cold air. Of course, we're getting our share too. It's already down to 28 here, so your temperatures will be warm by comparison.

Weather Channel says it is 2 degrees out now and going to the minus side before dawn. Wind chill any where from 10 to 20 below. Snow possible 4 of the next 5 days. To think that 25 would feel like a tropical heat wave. I put gas in the Intrigue for Glendia a while ago and my hands took 30 minutes to warm back up. Them there Carhart gloves was like havin nutin on my hands. Man was it cold standing out there at the gas pump.

Thanks for the prayers and well-wishes everybody! I just got back from St Agnes hospital where Vicky was admitted. She has two separate fractures in her ankle, plus it was severely dislocated. If you don't have a weak stomach, you can view a picture of the injured foot beside the good foot by clicking HERE. After I snapped that photo, the orthopedic P.A. (physicians assistant) loaded her up with pain killers and did a "reduction", where he basically wrenched her ankle back to its normal position. She'll still need surgery though, to hold those two fractured bones in position via plates and screws. She'll have to avoid putting any weight whatsoever on the left foot for at least two weeks.

Gotta git some shut-eye, tomorrow will be very busy...!

Just dropping in quick to say good morning before i head out to a track meet. I dont know wo scheduled a meet on the last day of vacation, but whoever did it, im not thrilled with. nothing like waking up at 430 and riding a bus for an hour

What a small world. My first hard drive was a 10 megabyte Winchester drive. I'll tell you how I keep my 80 gig main drive from becoming even half full, being that a lot of what I store are photos, videos and slideshows. For one I don't clutter up the drive with those big camera download programs. I don't even install them. I have a multi-card reader connected to a USB port. I take the card from the camera and insert it in the reader. From there I can use the fax and photo viewer program to sort through the photos and decide which I want to keep and which I'll throw away. Those I want to keep get transferred to a CF card that's in the reader full time. Once they're transferred I can wipe the camera card and put it back in the camera. Neat and fast. No having to wait for photos to download from the camera and no memory hog camera program to fret about. When the CF card gets close to full I dump it's entire contents onto a DVD-R then wipe the CF card, thereby making it ready to use again. At no time did I add anything to the hard drive and I've been using an 80 gig drive since 2004. I just replaced it on 12/31/09 with a new 80 gig drive since I've never had to have anything larger.

Good morning. It's 30 and clear. The high today will be 50 and it will be partly cloudy.

I found an IDE compatible hard drive enclosure yesterday at Radio Shack. It has a 'GigaWare' brand on it and works with PC's and Mac's. It's compatible with Windows Vista, XP, ME, 2000 and Mac OS 10.1x and higher. It took me about 4 minutes to put together. I was taking my time. Now I can use my USB-IDE cable setup to run an internal DVD/CD drive as an external drive. Things to do today include sending some packages out and getting the rest of the grocery shopping done.

Morning gang!
Jeepers Ken !! Please let Vicky know that we're all thinking about her, and will keep her in her prayers. Now is the time for you to rustle up the kids, and get them involved in Mom's care. If ya have to , resort to the ultimate weapon, the guilt trip. Remind them of all the missed work, and skipped activities that Vicky missed because one of the little ones had a cold or something.
Don't worry about teardown, I'm sure we'll have plenty of help. I'm going to enlist my stepson to help me make a surgical strike. My Dad got admitted to the hospital with breathing issues last night. So I may hit the door at 5:30, pack up all the vehicles from the layout, disconnect the aux power, then at 6 rip out the rail joiners and unbolt everything and toss it in the trailer. Once I get home I'm just leaving everything in the trailer. No sense unpacking, cuz Jan & I found a new house last week. IF things work out right, we could be moving next month into a 5 br rancher with a full basement!!! It's only a mile away, so I'd move the modules 1st, then use the trailer to move the rest of the house. (Maybe Bill's & Ken's trailers too!)
Catch ya'll later,,gotta wake the stepson up!!
