Coffee Shop Part VIII

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

Jim (UP2CSX) I understand your dilema but this the only time of year we get a bunch of shows. There is another one coming up in Tampa. It is funny how big cities like Birmingham doesnt that many shows being rich in history on RR.

Anyways have any you guys heard from B_Kosanda lately?
I was wondering if you guys or he remember a topic on this web site Marinette, Tomahawk & Western Railroad box car? I think there was discussion on it and the history of the RR. I am pretty sure that Bill was in on it too. I picked up one those boxcars but wanted find that thread on it here on this site. There were plenty of picks too. I did a search but no luck. Ugh I hate it when the mamory bank does recall the exactness of my recollection the processor needs to defrag. LOL

(cough, cough) Morinin' fellas.:(

Went to the Dr yesterday, as I hadn't been feelin' good. I now have a viral infection, the Dr says. Probably a light case of the flu. So yall need to stay upwind of me for now so I don't give it to yall! Only the second time in almost 10 years of my immunoglobin treatments that I've got sumpin' like this.

Jim;

Those kids on the slip and slide, won't be doing that after Saturday! Supposed to rain all day and the temp drop to below freezing! The metero..., metrro.... oh shoot! The weathermen up here are discussing the possibility of a brief changeover to light snow for Saturday evening. Probably never happen. Last snow we had here was 3 days before X-mas 1998, and it lasted only about 30 mins, and was melted 20 mins after that.

We used to host at least two shows a year here, with the "fall" show being the biggest, but with the price of space rental, gas, and table rental going up like they have, we were forced to stop. We wamted to host one this year but with gas being the primary cost, only one or two outside dealers, (those from more than 250 mile away), most of our old "regulars" won't make the trip. So no shows here except for a real small club show this year.
It was 2 weeks ago, and I can tell you, that you didn't miss anything.:(

Rex;

Don't like grits huh? I'll take all you don't want! :DJust slather it in butter and bacon bits!:D But if Flo or Sabrina brings me that powdered cardboard known as "instant" grits, they can keep it! I haven't found a decent maker of instant grits since they started making it in the 1970's.They all taste like cardboard!:p

Ken;

Congrats mate!

Good deal! Best wishes to the bride! My bride and I have been happy for almost 35yrs. You gotta do yur best to catch up!

Good Morning Bill & Corey & Mark another typical overcast day here on the Niagara Frontier . Not like the ice storms they are suffering in the Mid West . Corey sounds like you have a plan hope all tursn out and your back on your feet in a few years. Phillip hope all went well with your wife .And Flo a big order of Home Fries loaded with oinions for us Northeners . Lol Have a good day all @

Good morning folks

At least it was not raining this morning. Several months it seemed like we could not buy a drop of rain, now it seems like it has been raining for weeks. Guess what it is supposed to rain some more tonight until Thursday. The high today is supposed to be 48 F. It was 38 F as I began my adventure today.

I continued painting the railings on the hoods of the coil cars. I can’t believe how much dreading installing the grab irons was interfering with my modeling. Now that I came to the conclusion not to install them I reenergized.

I hope everyone affected by the ice storms comes out OK. We got hit back in 1994 or 95. We went without power for about a day and a half with temperatures in the teens. There were so many people without power that they called in crews from other areas. Our power was restored by crews from Niagara Power and Light.

Tonight we have Cub Scout Roundtable so I am not sure what if anything modeling-wise will get done.

I hope everybody has a good day.

Morning ....well I guess for the year end we gotta go out in a bang in Fl with the Tropical storm watch....nuts just what I need. I am about to do my final dive at West Palm Beach this coming Saturday. (then sunday off to tampa train show)

Oh well ya'll have a good day!

Morning all!

Well looks like we might see some of the ice storm after all. It's hitting up north of here now and it's due to move south. It's too warm right now. It's in the 40's and it's supposed to go up a little before the front hits. Thats when the ugliness starts.

Yesterday didn't go so well at the doctors office. Things are on the fence. They aren't really bad, but they aren't really good either. They may have to redo the surgery. They put her on absolute bedrest for the next 2-4 weeks. They'll see how things are in 2 weeks. I feel so bad. I just wish I could take this from her and do it myself.

Oh well, gotta hit it!

Good morning folks. I'm going to start taring the layout apart tomorrow. I purchased a few storage bins to put my train stuff in. Thankfully, I don't have that much to store. I negotiated trackage rights to the future spare bedroom. I have to share it with the computer and a couch, but at least it's something.

I'm starting to get excited for what the future holds. I was offered a job from a family friend starting between 35 and 40 thousand a year. Since we've learned to live without my paycheck for over a year, this will be a huge boost. Living like college students should produce around fifty thousand in savings in two years. It may be more, but I don't want to get to far ahead of myself.

I'm thinking about planning a sectional layout that will come together as an around the room when I have the space. I would like to base it in the mid forties to early fifties. I have always been fascinated by this era. My dvd collection will back me up on that one. I would love to have large steamers pulled into service for the war effort. A troop transport pulling into a large depot area will be the first section I build. It will allow me to have plenty of modeling time detailing the scene. I won't be able to run trains at first, but I don't care. I enjoy the building process more than anything.

Well, I hope everyone has a good day. Thanks again for the kind words.

Afternoon everyone!

I've been busy finishing up some cookies for the baskets for the Shut-ins from church. They don't look like much but they are tasty. Have one!

Afternoon, all. Hope everyone is having as good a day as the can.

Phillip, I'm sorry to hear that things didn't go exactly as planned with the doctor but maybe she will end up on the right side of the fence on this one. I know what you mean about wishing you could take this all from her. :(

Jim, you remind me of an X brother-in-law that originated from Michigan. He complained constantly about Alabama, from the weather to the politics. One day I had enough and asked him why he is still residing in the state after 25 years, even told him love it or leave it. His reply was, "Oh, don't misunderstand, I like it here."  (BTW: I would leave it, but haven't found any other state that was different, just not as obvious.;) )

Rex, since I married a native girl, and she likes Alabama, I don't think I'm going anywhere else soon. :) It's not a matter of liking or not liking Alabama, it's a matter of adapting. I'm learning how to adapt to the weather, the politics, the graciousness of most of the people here, and the fact that I can things done fast or I can get them done right but I can't both and, if it's from the the state or local government, I can't get either. :D As you say, most place have just as many warts (which is why I left California) but Alabama does a better job of putting their warts on display sometimes.

Ray, those are very cute cookies and I'm sure they taste as good as they look.

Corey, getting an actual paycheck will be a nice change from struggling to get some cash out of your business. Now you get to do the fun part of model railroading - make a new empire in your head.

Alco, that so-called tropical storm will never make it Florida and certainly won't give us any rain. It's just a normal subtropical low that the NWS gave a name to try and get their numbers closer to their predictions for the year. Hurricane forecasting has become more smoke and mirrors than science.

Carey, I hope you start feeling better soon. I suspect the NWS is overdoing the strength of that front for the weekend as far as we are concerned. There might be a little white stuff in the hills in far northern Alabama but the front is doing a good job of blowing itself out over the Midwest. It sure looks impressive on radar though. As long as the cold air gets here after the tropical air has already left, we should be OK but I'm still concerned about a tornado outbreak. I guess we just don't have the population concentration to get a decent train show. Too bad because someone would sure get a lot of my money. :) Did you ever see the movie "My Cousin Vinny"? They have a great scene about instant grits and Southerners.

Tom, you can keep the 38 degrees but we'll take some of your rain. I hope the folks in the Midwest are surviving these ice storms as best they can. We had a few when I lived in Cleveland and no power for five days isn't a lot of fun. :(

It's sunny and warm down here in Dixie again with a temperature of 83. The record for today is 81 so we've already blown through that. The all-time record for December is 85 and I think we've got a good chance at that one if we don't get too many cumulus cloud buildups. I finished up my billboards this morning and they do add that realistic touch to a town scene from that indeterminate era of the 50's through the 70's. I'd really forgotten how common billboards were until I realized things didn't look right because I didn't have any.

Well what the heck... I think I crashed my server's SQL, either that or someone else did, and I'm stuck dealing with mine being crashed too.

Model Railroad Tips keeps giving me 500 server errors, php call up, and SQL errors.

Phillip - so sorry to hear the news wasn't as good as you'd hoped. You're back on my prayer list!

Corey - that's great news indeed! Now maybe you can work more 8-hour days than 12-hour ones that business owners often have to do. IOW, more time for mrr!

Sure hope NickB is doing alright, being in that nasty ice storm.

Josh, I'm sure that your SQL Server problems are NOT your own fault, it probably was a botched software upgrade by your ISP. If they can't quickly repair the glitch that's causing all those "500" errors, then hopefully they have a backup of everything from the last time things worked properly.

Ray, you got any cookies left. They sure look yummy.

The layout rewire is finally at the stage of "no power". I have moved the Command Module and thingys over to the new under-the-layout, 45"wide, sliding shelf where the PM-42, signal drivers, and block detection boards are mounted. This new location is at mid-point of the layout. My next step is to wire-up the power districts and give them the smoke test:eek: .

Jim, you are right in not expecting anything to move fast with local or state governments in Alabama. Oh...don't ask to see the law or ordinance as to why something is done the way it is. You will probably get the answer: "That's the way we have always done it." :D

Carey, my Indiana uncle always said grits were only fit to feed the hogs with...I agree.:p

Good morning folks

I actually saw some sun this morning. It lasted about a half an hour. Temperatures are little on the mild side. It was 52 F on the way to work. By the time I got to work it was raining. Our high is supposed to be 55 F. Tomorrow we are supposed to get a wintry mix. I am scheduled to take a field trip down to Virginia, just outside of Washington to take a long at retractable median barrier gate on I-95. We are planning to install one or two on one our Interstates to help prevent what happened on I-81 in Berks and Lehigh Counties last Valentines Day when people got stuck on the highway for over 24 hours due to ice and snow. With the weather forecast I am not sure I want to drive 2-1/2 hours one way. I am hoping they reschedule it.

No modeling last night. I attended our Cub Scout District Roundtable. Tonight we have Cub Scout Den Meetings.

Depending on whom you listen to this weekend we could have anything from rain to 12 inches of snow. I am hoping that on Sunday I can get to the Greenberg Show. Finally we have one close to home. We have not been to a show in about four years.

I hope everybody has a good day.

Mornin' Bill & Tom , Woke up to a nice slushy driveway . But sun is shining so not to bad outside around Western New York .High of 35 tropical heatwave.Ray cookies look good enough to eat . Corey looks like things are working out for the better . Jim I can still remember them South of The Border Billboards along I 95 all the way to South Carolina ! But Burma Shave where still the best . And Mail Pouch on the barns . Well gotta get going and make some coffee. You all have a nice day !

Weather man keeps talking about nasty stuff, but we keep not seeing it. Blessing? Hmmmmmm........................

What up all!

Thats right, the weather man 'round here has been WRONG! Can you believe it? I suppose he was erring on the side of caution by predicting worse then it actually turned out, but I got up early to scrape windows and didn't have to........not that I'm complaining mind you!

So what's he got in store for us the next few days?

Today: morning light rain may mix with sleet and snow north, then dry - high: 38
Tonight: light wintry mix possible - low: 32
Thursday: chance for morning light snow north and light rain south, then cloudy - high: 38
Friday: partly cloudy, cooler - high: 37

Looks lovely, huh? Bet you southern folks would like a piece of this action, huh?

Oh well, gotta run! Catch up with you all later!

Morning fellas!!! Yea KenL doing alright with all the ice that was around, luckily enough where I live we escaped most of the ice somehow but about 20 mile south towns were without power and it was real nasty. The weatherman now is predicting possibly 5in of snow this weekend. I'm done with my classes and now just focusing on relaxing in the evenings.
