A beginner's layout

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

Since I decided not to run a stack train on the layout I've started to reconfigure a little track work (just when I thought I was done :(). I ripped up the long spur which served no other purpose other than to store the stack train. I didn't have enough room to model a sufficient intermodal yard but I do have enough room for this https://pjstrainshack.com/product/ho-scale-walthers-heritage-double-background-building/

I was tempted to buy it but I think I'll buy two of the kits and figure it out for myself (the best I can). I don't want to build two whole kits and just glue them together...that won't look right. I know some Walthers kits come with scribed lines to cut along for modifying and kit bashing. I'm hoping they expected some of us would want to double up (triple up, etc...) this kit.

Anyone with any experience or ideas about this would be appreciated. I don't think I'm great at kit building and have never even attempted a kit bash at all

Thats awfully expensive for 2 Walthers kits bashed together that can be had for $32 a piece. You're paying that guy almost $65 to put those 2 kits together and paint them. You will be surprised how easy it is to put multiple Walthers kits together,

If you want a building like this, buy the kits and do it yourself.

Yup, if not much worse :D.

I work in construction and sometimes get laid off in the winter....I could use a lay off this winter :D
My daughter's boyfriend also works in construction, laying all the groundwork for new builds, hasn't worked the last couple of weeks due to all the rain we've been having recently.

Summer is my main time off when the University is on summer break, but 3 months is a long time, my boss will give me some tours to do, so I don't get too bored sitting at home with my trains. :(

My newest project has arrived!

I already took a look at the front walls and pillars to get an idea what I have to do. Looks like just trimming a bit off of one of the front walls (and presumably a back wall, a base and a roof) it will look like one continuous building. Tomorrow I'll try to find a good cutting tool for the thick plastic...any suggestions? :)

Looks like you have a fun project in the works, anxious to see this progress.

I'm anxious to see how it turns out too! It seems like a somewhat easy kit bash but I've screwed up easy things before :D

I have so many things started that need to be progressed but this has to get built so I can determine its placement on the layout. That way I can put the spur to serve it where it needs to go. Just when I thought my trackwork was done 😩

And so it begins...

I'm going to cut off the protrusions from the center pillar. It will cover the cut wall and I'll glue the finished wall to the center pillar.

It didn't occur to me that I would have to cut the windows and "glass" too but I did. My plan is to just keep cutting off a little of every piece of one kit where it connects to the other. Hopefully it come out alright.

Not finished but the "kit bash" part of it is! It was a learning experience. If I had it to do over again I would avoid some careless mistakes but I think it came out ok.

It took more trimming of little things than I thought but I had fun having a go at it.
