I completed the working turntable at the Grantsburg, WI depot. First, a photo of the prototype, a Ron Nixon photo from the NPRHA:

Here is my version:

I made it out of a piece of wood and some plastic, it works!

There is a handle on each end, like the prototype. I could not get the little men to turn it, however ;)

I am starting on this project today, will be using Styrene for the walls. My stencils are white so will have to choose a fantasy paint color.

It looks like two tracks in the sand. I think they pulled the wagon up next to the boxcar and unloaded the grass straw that way.

I got the styrene cut today, most of the windows are in place. I decided to use the ones I have, required a little trimming. Here is the structure before final assembly:

Plan set and prelim work.JPG

Shows you a little of my method, I ended up making it 24' wide, still could have been wider but with the available space and proportions being compressed, I will settle with this. I made the grass warehouse as long as possible with the materials I have, turned out to be the perfect length to fit between the tracks

I think I will put a large door on the other long wall as well, however I do not have any other views so am just guessing. The model will be 24' x 52', I think the actual building was 30' x 60'. Not sure what final dimensions I will make of the garage yet.

I will be adding a bunch of sand, but keeping it clean where the wheels run with use of some wood, also raising up the building.

My decals are not exactly the prototype, but I will be improvising with them as well, the one I have for the roof is a very close match.

I think in reality they loaded most of the Crex grass directly onto box cars from wagons and did not store very much, but enough to make the warehouse a necessity.

On second thought, comparing the pictures, I may rebuild this face with the little bump out as narrow as the two windows and adding a wider door next to the entrance? I can put this end on the back. Maybe take a couple hours time... I might regret not doing it

I decided to rebuild the face above and put it in the back, made a new front makes it look a lot better I think, I will get all the pieces glued and things will dry before I decide if I will be painting the trim, it looks pretty good like this:

(these are all the parts I will be assembling after the "glass" is in the windows)

interior, parts.JPG

I used auto primer in the interior and Nutmeg on the exterior. Should be white but my decals are white...

These sections have not been glued together yet.

I think I will be keeping the visible door open here, as shown... Paint the trim?

exterior, left.JPG

This is the side that will show the most. Will be a Crex decal on this side and a smaller one on the front

exterior, rear.JPG

This is the back side, will be not very visible. Too bad because I like the way it looks!

I always finish the back of my buildings in case I move things around.

The roof is standing seam galvanized and will also have a decal, like the prototype. My seams are much closer together, but I will go with it

Looks great!

Are you going to make it easy on yourself and buy the Evergreen standing seam sheets?

Funny you would ask, I was just looking at their products. I have Northeastern Scale Lumber "tin" standing seam, with 1' spacing. I tried to scale the standing seams in the prototype photograph and I think they are close to 1', which would make the cupolas 4' l by 2' w. Not sure if my dimensions are exact but good enough, the building is a bit compressed in width, however, I made my warehouse longer due to available space. Creative license.

If not 1' maybe 18".

I am going with the 1'. I will be painting it as they appear to have a painted roof.

I went with the Evergreen #4523 Metal Roofing. Spacing between seams is 3/8"

I decided to dig into the cupolas today, I cut them out of a cereal box and used scale lumber for the lattice:

making cupolas.JPG

I decided to put the tin on and glue down the cupolas, ready to paint the roof and go for some finishing touches. The paint on the walls seems a bit tacky, we have had pretty high humidity lately, I will be waiting a couple days before applying the decals:

I will be painting the roof and cupolas a darker brown color, so the decal really shows

The windows are in.

more later, thanks for looking!!

Got a couple of the decals on the new building, as well as adding some details,

First the interior, this is not exposed so find some popsickle sticks to keep it strong, square, and rigid:

Crex warehouse reinforced interior.JPG

Closeup of the new decals, will be adding some matte finish after applying the roof decal on the other side

warehouse 2.JPG

I have had the mule team for years, made the hay wagon from scale lumber and wheels from the coal elevator that I did not use

warehouse scene.JPG

The Grantsburg historical scene above, there is room for a couple more buildings, and the turntable is also part of the scene but not shown in this photo.

Thanks for looking!!
