Just wanted to put up a few pics to see what ya all thought. Wads of newspaper covered with paper towel strips dipped in plaster paris. I experimented with some coloring, then sprinkled some dirt on from outside, and threw on some under brush. Eventually want to add trees, oak probably. I'm pretty happy with it so far, except for the back where I tried to make a section to pull off to get access to the track. Will probably have to re-do that some how. So whatcha think?
Very nice! Looks better than my mountain. Definitely needs some trees though.
What area are you modeling? I would think some pines would look better than oaks.
Overall, great job.

I'm not modeling any particular area, but I've always liked the reddish colored hills. Maybe some oaks at the lower elevation and a few pines at the top for trees. I can't seem to make up my mind between a fairly wooded area or a sparser deserty look. At the moment I'm just seeing where it takes me and what looks right to me. It's all easily re-doable, so what the heck.

Just my opinion, but I say make it look like this. Photos were taken recently at a camping trip up in the Rocky Mountain National Forest, about 3hrs west of Denver. Those are some Aspens...so pretty.
Yeh, that is beautiful, but I'm 67. I ain't got enough time to make that many trees.

We have some beautiful scenery in Colorado. We caught some 14" Rainbow trout in that lake.
Woodland Scenics has Value Packs of ready made trees. Depending on the kind of tree and the height they come in packages of about 12 to 36 trees. While not absolute foreground quality they do allow you to plant a forest quickly and easily. Trunk armatures are plastic and plastic bases are included but not attached. I plant them into the scenery without the bases by drilling a small hole and glueing them in. Trees you built that may look a lot better can be used nearer to the edge. Stump castings placed here and there to represent trees that have been cut down is another fairly quick way to give the impression without spending a lot of time.
I'm soon to be 64 and I've often wished a birth certificate came with an expiration date so I could plan my time and projects better.

It looks like you've got a good start on more of a desert landscape than the high mountains. I'd stick with that, adding more brush and a few trees. Most vegetation in the desert tends to grow in or near washes, so you might try to work in a least one drainage area.
