Ok, im at that point that I dont want to keep putting my models back in the little boxes and stuffing a plastic tote. I see the boxes that A-Line sells and the matching tote if you want.
Besides those boxes, what other options are there out there to carry stuff around so you dont have all the small boxes?

Show you stuff.

but how well would they hold locomotives and cars? I thought i saw someone at a show last year use some kind of toolbox to carry his stuff. I want to be able to keep it compact also so I can use one of those small, collapseable hand carts.

I use a metal toolbox designed for carrying circular saws for cars that are always together.
For toting cars & locos down to the club I use this box I found in an antique shop.
Not sure what it was used for originally, you can see in the second pic it has slots in the sides and wooden dividers that fit in. It holds quite a few cars and I haven't had anything break yet.

I'm using some "scrap" boxes that came from a new computer we just bought. They're the prefect depth, I think the same as the A-line low boxes.

I bought a couple locos from a board member here that were missing their boxes, so I went to my local walmart and picked up one of those clear plano tackle boxes that comes with pieces to adjust the size of the compartment. It was like 3 dollars and seems like they would hold any type of equipment except for maybe those articulated autoracks and large steam engines. Combined with a little bit of thin foam and they make the perfect travel box as they are very tough.

Find a computer store that sells all the hardware and software and stuff the computer geeks like to use for building, repairing or upgrading computers. Thats where you should find all those boxes you want. Do you have a store called Micro Center near you?

I have also seen computer paper boxes with the lid that just fits on top. Cut down to the height of a HO car or locomotive and used with the existing lid.

Im going to need a bunch of boxes like these as well. Currently, I just keep my eye out for the short type boxes that fit the bill. I also save Moog chasis parts boxes that carry automotive suspensions parts that technicians like myself use to repair vehicles on the job. They are similiar in size of athearn BB, boxes. But many of those wont go back in since your always taking them out of the box all of the time. They also work better since the model on the longer equipment wont fit back in the box it came in once you put couplers on.

I use the A-Line boxes for Rolling Stock and Locos stay in their original boxes if they can. I have learned that stuffing locos in an A-Line box and carrying it around results in more broken parts and handrails then I care to replace. Also you put 12 locos in the A-Line box and then put 5 boxes in a tote bag and you can imagine how heavy it can get. I know that the A-Line boxes are not cheap but they fit my needs and I have tried everything from plastic totes to Paper boxes and nothing worked as good as what I have now. A lot easier to keep an inventory to as each car has its place in a box.

Here are some of my boxes.

DAMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM, Mark!!!!!!!

So right now it sounds like the concensus is 50/50. Use original boxes to totes.
