John nice story and pictures . Ray I could use some of the sister's medicine !
Jeffrey, is the handrail striping on those KCS engines paint or tape? Seems like a really complicated (and expensive) way to do handrails.

As far as I know it's tape. I could be wrong though. I haven't looked at one up real close.
I've never seen class lights cut off and filled in like that. What little I've seen has just been a plug where the lens once was.
Interesting.
KCS does quite a few things that people don't expect, such as have an SD50 built on a SD40-2 frame. KCS has four of them. They're list as SD40X's. They're different from the SD40X's you may be familiar with. There's only four of them and KCS owns all four. They're numbered 700-703. Here's a photo of #700.
I'm with Mac on this one. That's about the worst looking job of removing class lights I've ever seen. And what are those two valves or fill caps below the former class lights? It almost looks like the nose from some other engine got grafted on to that one.
You may be right. It may be a rebuilt wreck. Probably explains why it's been on switching duty in Leesville for several years.
Lots of ATSF, UP and BN units had the class lights blanked like that. If a loco has something that doesn't work it can be bad-ordered. The usual RR approach is to remove it before it breaks which is why gyralites are not in use any more, except a few on the P&W (Portland and Western) in the PNW.
The KCS didn't order the SD40Xs that way. They were originally designated SD50S and sold to Norfolk and Western. NS got rid of them as nonstandard and KCS picked them up. The original SD40X was a SD40 built on a SD35 frame.
More info? put 'SD50 prototype SD40X' in your fav search engine
The two caps below are sand box access...

NS never had these 4 units. They were built on order for the KCS as SD50 testbeds. N&W received 6
similar SD50 prototypes. THE NW units were 6500-6505 and were designated as SD50S (S for short).
Athearn Genesis covered hopper, lightly weathered.
That KCS is one nasty looking engine no wonder it is doing switching !!!
The joys of the double designations. There's two styles of SD50S's, 6 to N&W-NS (Gone as of ~2000?) & what, 6 even shorter ones to Hammersley-NREX-Utah Railway.
The SD40X is just as interesting, there's two versions. The original SD40X was an SD35 built to SD40 specs, 9 were built and ended up on the UP. (
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=397960 ) The SD40X here is an SD50 test bed, 4 were built, and as Jeffrey said, they've been on the KCS since "birth".
My fire dept had a call-out today to one of the switchman shacks.
I modeled it like that, just black paint.
Just finished this log loader after finishing the log truck earlier this week. Can't wait for the next WPF though! Too excited. Now if I can get these painted to look halfway decent!
Oh, I also just built that lumber facility this week too... it also needs paint still.
Looks great, Fire. It would be right at home in Alabama with all our logging.
Jeffrey, where's the roof ventilation on that shack? I know the first thing you firefighters like to do is chop holes in roofs.

Watch out Fire! That thing from the Terminator has turned itself into a truck and loader on your layout! Better get John Conner out of there stat!

Haha, yeah. The molten metal look!

Thanks for the clarification, you can learn something everyday.

Not needed on a small structure like that. It would do more harm than good.
