The cut in half hopper car

Now that the sanding tower is almost finished. I started on the sand storage unit. In Brewster they used a full size hopper car still on it's wheels for the storage. But after seeing the article in Railroad Model Craftsman ( Cars used as structures) and seeing the cut in half hopper cars used for sand storage by three railroads. I decided that would be more interesting. I attached three photos to show you my progress.

Photo 1 - I glued a piece of Evergreen 020 thick sheet styrene to the back of the half car.

Photo 2 - Since the sand car in going to sit behind the engine yard offices I decided to raise it up a bit like one of the MRC photos.

Photo 3 - You get a clear view of the cut off back with only a little rust added.
