I have an HO scale layout with a double crossover. My question to anyone that might have some experience with these track fittings is what switch machine works best and how many does it take? Thank you for reading this.
Unless you have some fancy linkages figured out, I'd say at least two machines set in pairs for routes.
I like the Tortoise machines, never really tried any others so can't say which is best.
Double crossover
I had four tortoises set up to run my double crossover but took them out and put in manual controls instead. It's the most switch on the layout, but four tortoises is a lot of money for one switch.

There're five switch motors for this jct.

Missing the Wolfgang
Wolfgang Where have you been? Love the signal bridge.

I think a double slip crossover would be cool to have but would be a pain in the butt to try to wire for any kind of electricity. You can fizz out a powerpack or booster in seconds if you didn't do it right. BTW a Double slip X-over is nothing like wolfgang's crossover, it's basically a diamond in the middle of two trakcs meant for a crossover with 4 switches 2 east for 1 and 2 mains and 2 west for 1 and 2 mains.
I've got 4 switch machines on mine, one for each set of points.
