Now, I have my SD70MAC, made by Kato, and a Lenz Silver Direkt DCC decoder to go into it. I don´t want to take it apart again after all the grabirons and handrails have been installed, but alas: I can´t seem to be able to open the %$§/&!§ thing.

According to the instruction manual, I´m supposed to "squeeze" a region of the long hood just about 1 1/2 inches away from the back of the hood. Maybe I have been too gentle, but the shell won´t budge.

Is there some trick to open the model that I´m not aware of, or is Kato´s plastic designed to take more force than I have given it?

Any advice would be welcome! :)

rock the model while squeezing and pulling the chassis with your other hand. Also, be sure to take out the coupler pockets before attempting this.

No.

I managed to disassemble the model by "rocking" it a bit and installed the decoder. Thanks for helping me with that, I was indeed a bit too gentle.
