Today on the first tee I was telling some of my retired railroad friends, I hope I can swing today I fell down the 12ft berm on the old NH line the other day while taken some photos. Gordon a railroad friend said I worked on that project. So I said, you laid the new signal wire and installed the new ties on some of the bridges. He said that’s not a signal wire, it’s a fiber optic line that is used as a backup to tie in the Hudson, Harlem and NH in case of a power loss or accident that may damage the train control and other data on the three lines. It can now be rerouted across the lines down to Grand Central. The line was laid by a wire plow pulled by 2 engines. As the engines moved along at 1 mile per hour the ground is plowed up and the line is laid in place. The line is then covered up by a back hoe on a flat car. The old ties were replaced on some of the bridges because the line is now used to move maintenance of way vehicles only. This east to west line makes it much easier for the M of W to move across the three lines that run north to south. It saves an unbelievable amount of time with out any interference to other trains and they do the moving in the middle of the night.
