Happy New Year everyone from the UK where the weather is AWFUL!!!

Spending the day snuggled down with the rain and wind roaring outside so I'll take the tea and something toasted to go please.

I might attempt to finish off the repaint of an SW1 later if there is a break in the weather so I can spray the varnish top coat but it is looking doubtful...

Happy New Year to All. Whereas John is snuggled down somewhere here in the land of the former North British Railway the sun is shining on a blue sky. None of the snow that was forecast. A glorious day indeed.

Not sure what the plans for the day are, but whatever they be they will keep me busy.

Back later

Good morning to all and may you have a great and prosperous New Year no matter who is in charge where you live!

So. Central Wisconsin has already achieved its high temperature for the day! 27f/-2c. I’ll take my sister to the airport at 10am as she flies the 20 minutes to O’Hara Field in Chicago where she will join her daughter for the flight back to LA.

Enjoy your day

New Years Eve got to be worrisome. Before going to bed, we noticed we only had warm water coming out of the bathroom sink. I tucked my wife in bed and slipped down to the utility room. After clearing the isle of empty boxes of Christmas trains and other stuff. I discovered there was no pilot light burning on the water heater and no diagnostic LEDs indicating a problem. I lit the pilot; the water heater came to life, and I went to bed.

Thankfully, the water heater was functioning normally this morning. A good start to the New Year.

Other than one repair many years ago and one replacement I have little experience and even less knowledge of water heaters. My previous water heater had electronic ignition, no pilot. When I bought this house it had a new water heater, with a pilot. I've never had a pilot light go out.

My question is, what could cause the pilot to go out?

Good Morning All. Happy New Year. Clear and 34° to start our day here. Only getting into the low-50's today, before a return to the 60's tomorrow for a few more days. Wife called me in yesterday to look at the local weatherman on the TV. He said that it was going to get cold here, but he didn't know when, didn't know how cold, and didn't know how long it would last. But he was pretty sure that it would be early next week. Maybe he started the Champagne a little too early???

A routine day around the SFW estate yesterday, nothing notable except the drone. But it was my drone so I didn't attempt to down it. I took a few neighborhood pictures, notably the very lush green wheat field across the road next to me on the south. It's a great view from my back porch, but from the air, it's magnificent. View from over my house.

Looks like they haven't finished installing Jim & Pam's new home yet. It's the one to the left and above in the previous picture.

Further to the NW, Neal, his son Bubba, and friend Ray are beginning to clear some more stuff from his barn that was damaged by the tornado.

That's Bubba getting liquid refreshment by the ATV, Ray at the gate and Neal on the right headed for the cock pens. The remains of the roof are still scattered in the field to the east.

Neal parks his disused pick up trucks there as well.
In between is the rooster yard. The brooder house is a mess still, but the individual rooster shelters are those white sheds lined up behind it.

Those blue barrels are for the breeding hens.

I did stay awake until 10:00 last night, later than usual for me. On my last trip outside, I did hear some distant fireworks but nothing like the 4th of July. No particular New Year's resolutions this year, as usual. Same old unsuccessful ones like lose weight and try to drive slower. Maybe I should just buy more model railroading stuff. I am looking forward to getting the garden back in shape after last year's devastation, tornado for those who are unaware. I'm not looking forward to next week, as I have three doctor appointments in a row on Monday through Wednesday. First is actually the dentist to have my temporary crown replaced with the permanent one. Primary care guy on Tuesday and the dermatologist on Wednesday. Cardiologist later in the month.

I made a short visit out to the train shed yesterday, but only ran some more trains. I had left a couple in passing sidings the day before, and I moved them to staging and then ran another local to the Ethanol plant to switch out 16 cars.

Patrick - Prayers and best wishes to all in your family with health issues.
Troy - Best wishes to your MIL as well. And your angel of a wife for looking out for her.
Louis - I never had a home with a water heater with a pilot light. We had one when I was growing up, but Dad replaced that heater in 1963.

Once again, Happy New Year to all. Everyone have a wonderful Wednesday.

Good Morning All!
29F @ 86% with stars out. Guessers say white later.

Pretty quite around here except for the booms and bangs which started at 1800. Dogs were ducking for cover. Was not even close to the 4th of July stuff which makes me wonder - didn't bother the dogs then?

I made it to 2130 and crapped out. Maria waited for the ball to drop and she said it wasn't even shown on the channel she was streaming. Go figure. I assume Times Square is still there. I did not realize that there were no porta-potties for the square. Many, many people and no potties? I understand no backpacks or booze ... but still. Maria told me that some folks were wearing diapers! Just what I would want to do.

Looking forward to the New Year as my stuff seems to be getting lined up pretty good and can move forward. I actually only have ONE thing on the honeydu list and it is simple, said with tongue in cheek and waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Ran out of Ozempic and called the VA Nurse thinking it was time I was going to get off of it. Patty could not call Belinda ( my doc ) as she is in Missouri visiting family. So she ordered more for me which should last a little more than 2 1/2 months. Only doing 25mg/dl per poke and was told by Belinda that dose was less than the recommended minimum. Fasting glucose has been less than 130 for quite awhile; well except for a couple close to 150.

y'all be good now, ya hear?

When we had boilers with pilot lights any draught would put the light out. (An absolute pain as it happened regularly)
The only other time the light would go out was when the pilot light area needed cleaning.
A brief interruption in supply, low pressure, restriction of the pilot tube, a draft blowing the pilot out, corrosion at the thermocouple connection, a failing thermocouple, a blocked exhaust, a bad thermostat valve.
You said there were boxes around it. Possibly, when throwing the boxes down, one of em caused a gust of wind, enough to blow out the pilot.
I never had a home with a water heater with a pilot light. We had one when I was growing up, but Dad replaced that heater in 1963.
Gentlemen, you are truly the best, thank you!

After everything I have learned (thank you all again) I suspect/hope it was the windy day yesterday. Combined with having the basement door open along with the door to the utility room. No, I was not born in a barn.

The draft I allowed to happen blew paperwork off my desk into the utility room. My desk is located next to the door to the utility room. As it turns out keeping a window open slightly in the utility room is not such an innovative idea either. I kept the window open because the gas furnace, gas dryer, and gas water heater are all in the utility room. I didn't want any possible fumes to accumulate. Come to think of it, is natural gas heavier than air or is it propane? Why is it that I can remember the details of a ball game from thirty years ago, but forget so many other things?

For some reason I decided on the windiest and rainy day to measure the back porch doors I am thinking about replacing. After measuring the doors and cleaning up the mess from the wind and rain I took a shower. I noticed the water was not as hot as usual. but I chalked it off to me being cold from getting wet. The storm was intense at times; we even had some thunder and lightning.
