Good Morning All. Cloudy and a bit cooler at 76°, high today is predicted to be only 86°!!!! Still have thunderstorms in today's forecast, but the current radar shows them a few hundred miles north of here, heading east towards Oklahoma City. There's hope that they can expand outward and hit us. It might have hit 100° here yesterday, I personally saw 99.7° on my thermometer. That Hurricane Beryl might send some rain this far north later next week, but historically it won't be much.
We made the decision to make the weekly grocery trek yesterday, I went solo and went about 30 minutes earlier than normal. It was crowded, but the flow inside was good. Checkers manning 3 checkout lanes, I hit one and the checker next to us came over and bagged my stuff since many customers went to self-checkout even though manned lanes were open. Habit I guess. I have been told by my neighbor who works there that many customers had complained about the self-checkout, so they are slowly going back to real checkers. While she didn't know for sure, rumor amongst the employees is that shrinkage had also increased. Gasoline prices around town have seemed to have stabilized to between $3.09 and $3.25/gallon everywhere except the rural convenience store nearest me where it's still $2.99. Lots of traffic on the road home, due to there being a large recreational lake a few miles east of me, Lake Ray Roberts. Trivia: I had to move to my present location because my previous home was going to be a part of the lake when it was built in the early 80's.
Fireworks were plentiful last night all around our part of the country. Neighbors to the north whose home was destroyed were not home, so that annual show didn't happen, but Bubba to the west had his usual display with all of his buddies from town. The horizon in all directions had numerous displays. Most of the area farmers and ranchers had plowed their lands in the past 10 days, so grassfire danger was minimal.
I did spend some quality time out in the train shed yesterday. I attempted to add drivers to two convertibles, but the look just wasn't right.
No matter how much filing, sanding and trimming that I did, their heads always extended above the windshield. They'll remain as parked vehicles for now.
Back to the street scene in Charlottesville, I needed some traffic cones.
I am using a previously detailed MOW vehicle and a few figures to set a scene alongside the passing siding.
The Caboose Industries ground throw is a bit too out of scale though.
Two options exist, replace it with an N scale one, or move the entire crew away and just have them work on plain track instead. I need to mull this one over.
John - In unincorporated areas here in Texas, fireworks can be used all year long. However sales are limited to 2-10 day periods just prior to July 4 and January 1; and four 5-day periods around certain state holidays. Most commercial fireworks stands are only open for July 4 and New Years though.
Mac - While I vote in almost all elections, I sometimes purposely do not vote for certain positions if I don't like any of the candidates.
Note of interest: We, as many of you know, live in a very rural location. For about 25 years, our voting location was "
Lester Marshall's garage". We got to check out all of the new tools that Lester had bought since the previous election because he always hung them on the walls. One entered through an anteroom about 6' x 30', and left by another personnel door. Lester's wife always had a pot of beans and a platter of cornbread in that room for the poll workers! It was always quite a homey atmosphere. Lester and wife finally moved to a retirement community and the polling place had to move to a nearby church. My district boundaries changed and I now vote in a nearby community center.
Louis -
What is better than a good cold pilsner beer on a sweltering day?
