Good Morning All. Clear and 78°. Expecting a high of 103° today, I saw 99.5° yesterday. The usual heat advisory and forecast of hot & dry for the rest of the month. A typical August!
Back to the regular grind yesterday morning with another week's worth of firewood cut, but not yet stacked. Then came an "emergency" call from my out of town wife. She had forgotten to remind me that the Accura's registration expired at the end of July, so I had to search through the bill/statement pile and find the licensing information. Then a trip to the county seat (22 miles away) to have it inspected first. New windshield wipers needed, no problem. As an extra service, they check all fluid levels and filters. Needed a new A/C filter due to a rodent infiltration at some point; probably over the winter when we didn't use it for a few weeks. Again, no problem except the time needed to clean the nest out. Then off to the license plate place to get that taken care of. All in all, it took 1.75 hours to deal with, with the 45 minute round trip included. There went most of the afternoon.
Today is the weekly grocery trek, my wife already texted a partial list. She's bored and has been looking at recipes to fix after she gets home. I am told that there will be additional items this morning. Vitamin Shop and gas are already on the itinerary as well.
I got a bit sidetracked out in the train shed yesterday. I ran trains a bit but what got my attention more, was another result of the excessive humidity in there when the roof leaked. I had printed many 2D background structures on heavy paper and used them as part of the backdrop in a few areas. Here's what I have been finding.
Some that I had sprayed with Dull Coat came through in better condition, but will eventually need replacing.
So I spent time looking through my computer files and at
the thread on the forum where I got them to begin with. Took some time but I printed some new ones.
Some are smaller than scale to provide some forced perspective in some areas.
Mac - You've got a good eye for photos. Thanks for the postings yesterday. Beautiful country and I love the painted ads on the sides of the buildings. I need to remember to bring my camera the next time that I go to our county seat and take some photos there.
Patrick - I don't think the density of your corn planting was the issue. The short plants were probably because you used old seed. The dry ears were the farmer's fault as you admitted.
Tom O - Even though it seemed that we lived paycheck to paycheck when all three kids were in college at the same time, part of the monthly budget was automatically paid directly into the 401k, without fail.
As for aggressiveness in investing, I sometimes wish that I should be more aggressive than I am. My wife wishes that I would be less aggressive! If she had her way, it would all be sitting in savings accounts or money market funds, the interest wouldn't even cover the cost of inflation. She would never let up if I told her that we lost $8600 one day last week, but it will almost just as quickly come back. I keep about 35% in ETF's.
Shortwrench - Thanks for the comment. I like to have small scenes such as that scattered about the layout.
Today is the birthday of the late Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead. He would have been 82 if he had not died of a heart attack in 1995. And of course as
Jay has pointed out, today is National Day in Switzerland.
Everyone have a great day.
