Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum, and just getting back in to model railroading after taking a 12 year hiatus. My experience with model railroading before was limited to childhood and various attempts at weathering and such in my young age...most of these experiments did more harm than good. So I've pulled out my old stuff and am working on resurrecting it.

I'm working on detailing an ATSF GP50 (my oldest loco) and have a couple of questions.

First, prototype pics show the front walkway (not sure of the technical term here) to be square, whereas on my old Athearn BB it is triangular. How would you recommend fixing this?

*Disclaimer: my loco is in pretty bad shape, but I've got a lot more planned to do on it before I try my hand at airbrushing and decals...I'm sure I'll be asking a bunch more questions. That being said, any comments are more than welcome.

Second, I realized that removing the shell is going to be difficult after adding the plow and closing the rear pilot. What's the best way to deal with this? I've seen once that you can attach the couplers to the shell itself. How's that done?

Drill holes in the coupler mounting pads to accept a kadee draft gear box. After you install the draft gear box with the coupler in it, you can simply unscrew the coupler pocket, pull it out, and the shell pops off. Be sure to use a very sturdy mounting method for the plow as the entire weight of the loco minus the shell would be resting on the plow should you ever pick up the loco by the shell.

nice to have you on the forum k-pack! from what i see your gp50 has the correct anticlimber (walkway). have a bb gp50 in norfolk southern paint and it looks the same

Thanks for the replies and suggestions. I'll definitely be trying out that Kadee trick. I think this post was in the wrong section, so I started a new one over in "detailing": http://www.modelrailroadforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=17012

From what I can tell on ATSF GP50's, the anticlimber was modded on the front. A clearer picture from a modeler at Western Prototype Modelers shows it better:
