last night at the LHS there were diorama kits for school projects, stream, volcanoe, desert oasis, etc. I errored in not getting the manufacturer's name but it wasn't Woodland scenics and these kits were reasonably priced for 1sqft of scenery.

Has anyone seen and used these to hone their skills prior to attempting scenery on the layout?
 
I think Scenic Express offers those project kits as does Woodland Scenics. The 2 LHS I deal with don't carry the project kits from either outfit but the Woodland Scenic kits are available at large craft chains like Michaels.
