My overall aim is to create a weather and work stained 10 year old+ boxcar so I'll be enhancing the above with other washes and local rust, worn paint on contact surfaces etc
Thats why you buy a bunch of practice cars to experiment on.Very nice! I don't know how you guys can take a perfectly good freshly painted car and do this to it. I'll certainly have to try it some day after my layout is up and running.
Nothing wrong with keeping them as they are. I only recently caught the weathering bug.My problem is I like them the way they are. I'm pretty sure I'll master the dirt and rust if that's what I want, I'm just not sure it is what I want. All of my cars will be junk so no problem practicing on them
Even if you just dull coat the cars to get rid of the shiny plastic look would make a difference. My problem is I like them the way they are. Looks good.Latest update (hope these aren't boring you good folks!)...
I've added detail painting to the grab irons, steps door handles, walkway in MIG Ammo 0192 Polished Steel, then MIG Ammo 0045 Gunmetal and drybrushed both along with MIG Ammo 0042 Old Rust along the door guides, roof panels and walkways. I also added some rust patch and streak detailing to the sides, but not much at all...View attachment 166681

The photos show the car in natural light rather then LED lighting.
I've since added some weathering powders to the car and trucks, Im waiting on these settling before taking photos.
Goodness, thank you for your extremely kind comments!Went from boring, to beautiful and clean, to beat, dirty and one heck of a masterpiece to be proud of! Very well done!
Well done, think Tom's 1&2 may have competition.Goodness, thank you for your extremely kind comments!
I've now completed the car...

I brushed over the roof/sides/ends and trucks with MIG Pigments (I've had them so long I don't know what the product codes are but they are Black, Grey and Brown), going from dark to light. Darker to from the top down, into grey, into brown from the trucks up.
I am very pleased with this, now have another 47 that are almost layout ready to go! However I'm putting the paints and powders down so I can concentrate on the structures for my layout.
Thanks again for all your wonderful comments etc, I'm truly grateful.
Totally outstanding!Goodness, thank you for your extremely kind comments!
