That stinks having to tear down a layout. Man, that's what basement are for, TRAINS!. Years back I had to tear out an N scale layout with over 11 scale miles of main line. It does hurt.

Hope you'll be able to salvage some of the layout as it looked like it was really moving ahead.

It does kind of suck to take this one down. Luckily I don't have nearly as much track as you did! All the bench work is going to salvaged and reused. I'm currently removing track and will clean it as time permits. Hopefully this week I can cut the new bench work.

Darn, that really is unfortunate. As has been said, perhaps the "new layout" will be even better.
