I just got a new Athearn RTR AC4400 and a 54' FMC covered hopper. This is my first experience with buying a Athearn RTR line. I have a collection of 20 year old Athearn Blue Box line of locos and cars and was dismayed to find that had went to the RTR line and with an increase in cost.

Well my fears were unfounded as the quality has made a leap with the cost. The new AC4400 loco is the smoothest Athearn I have ever had with very nice detail, the couplers are Kadee style and already mounted at the correct height. The 54' hopper is also very nice with metal wheel sets and kadee style coupler set correctly.
20 years ago I would buy Athearn diesels for less than $20 and freight cars for less than $4. I would also add Kadee couplers for around $2 a pair. If you wanted to add metal wheel sets to your freight cars that would add to tthe cost as well. So with the added quality and ready to run aspect plus inflation then you are still getting good value for money.

I still like Athearn products.

Here I am comparing the new Athearn loco wheels to my polished original wheels. I just took my original Athearn wheel halves and chucked them in a Makita cordless drill and spun them while applying aluminum mag wheel polish with an old sock. They came out better than new as they were a real mess from being used and stored for 20 years.

Looking good! Glad to see you liked the quality of Athearn. I love the RTR stuff, though I still prefer the price of the Blue Box!

I have three of the Athearn CW4400AC's in the CSX gray-blue-yellow scheme, two of them are RTR units and the third is an old BlueBox. I'm quite happy with the RTRs - they run very smooth even at the lowest of speeds [though not quite as good as any of my Katos.] I 'dummified' the bluebox unit because it growled like an old coffee grinder and I never succeeded in speed-matching it to the RTR's.

The Athearn RTRs do not come with working ditch lights already installed, you'd need to buy a Kato for that. [I'm not sure about the Genesis line though, since I haven't bought any of those yet.]

interesting (and jubilant) that the hopper has the lower half painted. Previously (at least when I bought them over the years), the lower part of the PS hopper (BB) was unpainted and left black. Having to match the color always proved daunting and certainly a huge bother.

the Genesis' that i have purchased do have working ditch lights.. (SD70i, and SD75M)...

i have a few RTR's and am very very pleased with the performance as well as detail.. coming from someone who details all of his engines, having grab irons already installed brings a smile to my face:)as well as the fuel filler being an added part, not molded to the fuel tank

Athearn RTR models are great, i have prolly around 15-20 Athearn RTR freight cars, and a bunch of RTR engines. Most of the Athearn RTR line is DCC ready, except for the GP38-2's from what i have discovered, so those will have to be converted....

Genesis locos do have working ditch lights, at least all the Genesis units that i have have working ditch lights (i have 8 of them i think)
