I finally got around to installing some signals that have been sitting on the workbench.

The upper deck is about half done with signals, it's going to take a long time to get it all done.
 
Building and installing signals can get tedious.
We've been working on the detection and signaling at the club for almost a year.

Pennsylvania is the state, and it looks as if Pennsylvania is the railroad that installed the signals!

But Mr ClinchValley, what is the rationale for that bracket post in the fist picture? I'd have thought a simple mast would be perfectly good there.

Here's a failed attempt to show all three colors on a bipolar LED in the same picture. Of course yellow over green is "Approach Medium", as all our engineers know.

Here's one before painting and properly planting. The brass etchings are by Free State Systems.

John simple answer is lack of space. I use (railroads pretty much did also) an cantilever signal bridge when there was not enough clearance on one side to correctly install a regular mast signal. Here is another view of the same signal from the opposite direction, note the right side, no place to install.

I think what he was asking is why a signal mast was on the cantilever instead of just the signal target.
 
You know, I should probably start researching railroad signals. I would really like to add some to my layout but I just don't know anything about them. Do your signals control the trains or do the trains control the signals or both? I don't really understand how that would work I guess. I would guess that signals need to be placed anywhere that trains may cross each other's paths? I know, this sounds totally stupid but I seriously have NO CLUE!!

Why the mast on the cantilever signal bridge? That is how signals are mounted. Even if the signal is on the front of the bridge, it is usually on a mast. Here is a Dale DeVene photo at Fostoria is a good example
