thanks alot guys i remember as a kid visiting my family in oneida tn there was a small drop yard or classification yard of some sort,it was the oneida and western from the old steam o&w anyway i remember southern trains flying through there all day and all night, big trains with lots of power units.we would be at the big jons or pigly wigly and they wouldrumble thebuildings as they went by,it was the best.i keep searching the net for picsof the oneida yard from the 70sand 80s but no luck.i always wondered howcome they always used those high hoods and not the more common

The use of high short hoods on both the Southern and the Norfolk and Southern has been discussed endlessly. Since both railroads regularly ran their locomotives long hood forwards, the high short hood did nothing to contribute to safety. I think the broad consensus is that, since the first GP's were high hoods, it was simply a tradition to continue to order high hoods. Since the Southern and Norfolk and Southern have merged as park of the Norfolk Southern, the NS has been using the same low front hood as everyone else.

Try contacting forum member Cjcrescent by email or PM. He lives and breathes Southern's history and I'm sure he will be glad to help. He doesn't get on here that much so this may be faster for you.
