I'm looking for some input on Life Like GP-38 Chessie B&O set. Loco; dummy & caboose. Any good?
I think this is the older, pre-Spectrum series of models. If it doesn't say anything about having DCC on board, it's the old models. If you run straight DC and aren't too concerned about prototype fidelity, they run OK and are a good deal if you're paying $30 or less. I'd personally spend the $40-$55 to get a DCC equipped Bachmann GP-35. They look and run a lot better.
I was just wondering if it might be to toy like. I have a Bachmann GP 38-2 dcc but I'm not set up for dcc. I just like the chessie b&o line & it's hard to find much of that in my price bracket so, I thought I'd ask around as I'm not familiar with that brand. Thanks for your reply. John
Life-Like standard line is nothing but junk! Avoid it. If you don't want to spend much and want reliability get an Athearn Blue Box loco.
Ditto with Jeffrey there . Life-Like is junk unless it is a Proto !!!
Let me add my voice to the chorus - Life Like locos, unless they are Proto1000 or Proto2000, are toy-train locos... aka crap.
If you want an inexpensive Chessie set, Bachmann has a
powered and dummy GP40 plus a caboose. $45 from Tower Hobbies, likely a bit more from your LHS. This is better than the Bachmann of old, 8-wheel drive, metal chassis, flat can motor, just for those of you about to say "Yikes!". No, it's not Athearn or Proto or Spectrum, but it doesn't cost like it, and it's a surprisingly decent runner.
I'll third that and say that the Proto 2000 stuff is really great. And that's in DC mode. The cheaper stuff though, avoid it.
Jim
Ok, thanks , that's what I was thinking also. I'm going to try and find a dummy to match my Bachmann. Thanks again.
